a distance where it ascends the moun
tain side, cropping out iu higher pieces

the ledge we are glad to get a lunch,
and finding a bed on the soft side of a
pine board, we retire to dream of feath
r beds and other comforts. The next
morning bright and early we are
rowed across the river, and after an
hearty breakfast we turn our atten
tion to the mine. The tunnel on this,
the north side, has been run about
thirty-three feet The ore h verj
hard, and the entire work is done with
powder. After inspecting the tunnel
we follow Mr. McNair the superin
tendent, up the mountain which the
hugeledge traverses for a distance of
a distance of 1,000 feet. About 300

Silver Mining Co. of Jacksonville in
1877. Tiiis tunnel wag driven about

200 feet farther up the ledge we find

about thirty feet. The ore of these
two tunnels is of the same character
as that being run now, out is not so
heavy. In this upper tunnel t jtir ex
ists a vein of iomfhing resembling
red lead. It is toft and easilv
-vo-led with the hat'ilf, and we
ire inLnned, when mixtd with oil
makes an excellent paint. After
gathering a few specimens, we ascend
tu tire summit of tire ledge. Here we
find a different character of ore. It is
ipht and pnrouv, and full of cells re
eeaibling honey comb. Many speci
mens arc beautifullv colored aud crjs
tilized. This oie qives a fine asny of

mens we descend and cross the river
to the tunnel on the south side. The
ore in this tunnel is not so hnrd and
more easily niinrd. The tunnel ha
now been driven aliout 120 feet and
is being pushed day and night. The
ore in this tunnel assays twenty dollars
per ton. If there is anything, there
is something big, for the ledge is 240
feet wide and no one knows how long
