Ladies and Gentlemen, Sittprs and Brothers and Friends of the Order: The programme for your entertain ment this evening, as adopted by the eomraiUeelotSarrangeiBSiits, .provides fonrfcriefhistoryef-Jaetsonvillo- Lodge No. 10, I. O. O. F , by one of its members, and I have been sslectcd as the historian. But X cannot give anything like a full history of tho lodge in the time that has been allotted to me this evening; I can only touch upon a few important points. Pursuant to a call for a meoting of Odd Fellows of Jackson county, Ore gon, held at Jacksonville, on the 30th day of June I860, to tako into eon tideration the advisability of inititnt ing a lodge of OJd Fellows hsre in Jacksonville. The following named brothers responded ti the call, and ware present on that occasion. "W. C. Ransom, Vacaville lodge No. 83, California; John It. Ilulman, Yreka, lodge No. 19, California; Wm. "W. Kentnor, Yreka "lodge No. 19, Cili fornia; Eber Emery, Yreka lodge No. 19, California; Isaac N. Knight, lit. ShaBta lodge No. 70, California; Pat rick Ftiheley, North Star lodi;e No. 61, California; Newman Fisher, Pbilite rian lodge No. 8, Oregon; Wm. Berry, Delphi lodge No. 28, Indiana; John Bilger, Wal holla lodge No. 10, New York; Brace Luther, Canaserago lodge No, 123, New York; O. D. Hoxie, Hope lodge No. 4, Rhode Island. 14 iafall W. C. Ransom,, waSjoallSSko the ch airTahd iaetflSH 'TyI6wlri1lected secretary, when on moticn a comnittee of three were eppeinted to draft.a pe tition to the Grand Loda for a dis peusation or charter. After a short time the committee made their report, accompanied by a petition for a char ter, which report was adopted. On the 18th day of August, 18C0, Jacksonville lodgeNo. 10,1. O. O. F., of Oregon, came into existence with the following Charter members: Jeste Robinson, Jamas Kilgore, Eber Emery, Wm. C. Ransom, Patrick Fehelsy, and Isaac N. Knight. Eber Emery at this time is the only remaining Char ter member. " The lodge" was instituted by Samuel E. Slay the then Grand Master of this State, assisted by a number of visiting brothers from other jurisdic tions. Tho lodge being institute! in ample form was left alone to work out its own salvation. The first officers of the 'odge were Jesse Robinson, N. G ; "W. C. Ranson, T. G.; James Kil gore, Secretary, and Eber Emery, Treasurer. The lodgo was thus organ ized and in good working order, as tho results accomplished since aaun dantly testify, and Saturday night of oach week wasjixed as the regular night of meeting. I find by reference to the Tecords, that the receipts of the first month were 175 00, and there was paid to tho Grand Master S157 00 for fees and mileage for instituting tho lodge and $20 00 was paid for charter. At trie first regular meetingof the lodge a eommittca consisting of- three brothers were appointed to draft a eode of by laws for the goverunieutet the lodge said committee mad their1 report October 29th i860, aopompariied with a code of by-laws which Were adopt ed. The lodge at .that time labored rm, der tlre-tfisadvantages of not having a suitable building in which to meet for the transaction pf fkage business. At a tpecial-ulketing held August 20th, I860, a eonirniitee "was appointed to procure a hall for (he use of the lodge. The cohimiteea reported September 10th I860,' that the Masonic hall ceuld be procured for ?30 00 per month, furnished with lights and fuel, or $25. 00 per month without lights and fuel. The committee was instructed to pro cure the hall with lights and fuel, which they did, we then had a tern porary heme for a time, making our exppns's S30 00 per month be-idsa the ordinary pnes of thelodgp, and lbilitis for ck benefits afterwards the hall was rented for $25 00 fr mouth, or 300 00 yearly. It appears from the records that Yreka lodge No. 19, tf Yreka, Cali fornia, kindly loaned tc the ledge s set of officers' regalia's and that afttr wards our ledge bought the same. Oa the first meeting in January 1861, the lodge adopted adetign fer a seal, as follows: AH Seeing Eya" emblasoned in light, "Thrsa Links' and the "Bible." The seal is now ike one inxuse.by ihetodgq., Oi the kt meeting in HayTS62, nearly two years tfaTrSBTBiwH after its organization, the lodge paid the first weeks sick benefits of 314.00. And in August 1863 one wtekt sick beneSts of C44.00 was .ranted. The lodge, during the first three years paid only three weeks sick benefits ef S14.00 each, which enabled the lodge to accumulate soma funds in tho. treat ury. On the 19th of December 1S63, the lodge purchased a part of our bur ial ground in the Jaakionvillo ceme tery, and afterwards purchased the re mainder, to that now we liavj a place improved and adorned, a hero deceased Odd Fellows and their families can be decently buriid, when lifes fitful dream is o'er. Tho price fer each block of ground was established at the sum of $10 00 excepting ens block reserved as an Arbor, near the center of tho burial plot, and anotbir block et epart by order of tho lodge in which to inter deceased moaibers of ether lodges. On the 9th of Septem ber 1S65, tho lodge authorized its trustees to purchase the building we now own and occupy. The pree paid originally was $3030.00; afterwards paid for a dowsr right in building, 500.00; paid Wm. Gass for additional let for hack yard, $227.00; total, $3,777,00; paid at time of purchatf from lodge fund $800 00; leaving r indebtedness of $2,977.00, for whiah tlw trustees gave their joint note se cured by a mortgage on the building, and the lets connected therewith. Shortly after this time the "luJgo aaj frequently callsd upon to pay sitk benefits, and fur other benevolent en terprises, to meet these demands, pay interest on our indebtedness, and for repairs made in and about the build ing, besides the ordinary expense ef the lodge, kept the treasury very near ly drained, so that for several years we were unable to reduce our indebted ness but to a limited extent. Oar creditors wanted tho money due them. Matters began to look blue. The lodge held several meeifngs ta devita ways and means to meet the difficulty, daring one of these meetings a happy thought occurred to one of tho broth ers present, and that was, to band ths debt, the suggestion was promptly acted upon, the debt was bonded, stock was issued, the brotLcrs of the lodge bought every dollar of it, and I am happy to be able to say that the last of the stock was redeemed and paid years ago, when the debt was all paid, nnd we had a home of oar own, and all paid for, a heavy load was taken off our shoulders, and we had a rejoicing time over the event. On the 17th day of March 1873 the lodge was incorporated. The officers of said cor poration are composed of its Trusfes, who are elected annually, and as ex pressed in said article. "The business of said corporation shall be to preserve and pretect the property ot said lodg, diffuse the priueiplts of charity, and advance the interests of Odd Fellow ship." From tho organization of the ledge until October 1st, 1871, the annual dues to the lodge was $20.00 and after that date, the by-laws were anieaded so that the annual dues were reduced to $12.00 and sick benefits were grid ed to correspond to tho amount of das paid. I find after a thorough and careful examination of tha records, that the lodge has paid oat since its organization. For expanses, thassm of $14,907.17; sick and funeral base fits, and other benorolcnt catcrpriits, the suta of $14,127.62; on build ing, repairs on hall and furniture, $7,353.00; cemetery grounds, and re pairs thereon. $578.37; total, $37,066. 16. Assests. Brick building and lodge furniture valued at $4,500.00; cemetery grounds $500.00; regalia, etc, $250.00; money on hand and owing to us $2,239.40; total assests, $7,489.40. It will thus he seen that we have paid out on an average since the er gauzatioB of the lodge over $125 00 per month, or over $4.p0 per day Continued on fourth page. I
