Reminiscences of Public
Men.
Skerrard Cltmens, ef tha Wheeling
District of "Virginia, was the first
Southern representative who spoke
bodly against secession. He proved
on tb dunoitnlsts that their tchetnr
was long sines matured, and would
embrace tha opening of the African
slave trade, and coaeeqagnt destruc
tion of all4 the interests of Virginia in
slavery. -He quoted aU the abolitien-
ista, Engluh and American, epon the
stctssionists, showin both lo be work-
the Ameiican Union. He showed
hew the suicide of slavery was being
preefpitattd, and its grave dug by the
very men who had withdrawn from
Congress to protect if more effectually.
He told the South that if they fought
till the last aimed foe expired, they
could nevor expect from the North
the same guarantees for slavery en
jeyed ander the existing conititntion.
The speech was full of gems. It was
nervous and energetic in manner,
brave, incisive, at times terribly sar
castic and surcharged with earnest
nest and power. Coming from the
source it did, it fell on the House and
thronged galleries like a thunderbolt.
All Union raen thanked God and
breathed easier, while among disunion
ists was great wrath. His merciless
invective, when he showed up the se
cessionists an playing directly into the
hands of the afaolitienisU and all the
enemies of free government all over
the world, was a nest hitter dese for
some of them. Maay Virginia and
Kentucky members were very restive
and tried to conceal their chagrin by
leud laughing, talking and marching
about the hall. Some fled totally,
imitating the example ef the Brcession
it's. Clemtas charged tbenij with
cowardly treason to the JconiBjen in
tereets of the slave holding States.
IL, T)i,1 .Lg.T?;nl nnbnte to Jr.-
Adasas on the fleer for seeking rarans

whole, itwas thebrilliant speech de
livered in the House ef the session,
andjit produeid grrat excitement ami
admiration in an immense aadieuce.
Einersea Ethridge, of Tenneaser,
seconded Mr. Clemens a few days
afterwards. He was then about forty
years of age, tall and well formed, with
a face expressive ef firmness, and all
solid and manly qualities. A lawyer
by profession, be had a mind cf great,
natural shrewdness, and the manner
in which he parried the thrusts of
tboso who interrupted his speech,
evinced tbepessessien ef rare cool
ne, quickness and skill. Hi speech,
although totally different in matter
and style from that ef Mr. Clemens,
was aimed at thejsame.mark, and was
a most powerfai plea for the Union
as it was a few short weeks before.
Mr. Etheridjo was more logical than
Mr. Clemens, hit speech was mach
better arranged aadj'mere effective
although lest Tornamontedjwith tho
graces of rhetoric. There was a cer
tain rugged, homely force and a com
mon sense grasp of the theme and facts
relative to it, which were not so con
spicuous in Mr. Clement. lhese
qualities, together with intense ear
nesnest ef manner, and an occasional
burst of genains elequence, carried the
Housa and the audience with him
from the start, and it watquite im
possible to repress the hearty applause
which several timet broke ' sponta
neously ferth.
Eiheridge had got about half through
his speech when a thin, piping
voice proceeded from a weazen faced
little man, in a shrill tone demanded,
"Will the geatleman allow me t ask
him on which side he is speaking?'
The interruption came from Lake of
Virginia, one of the border State dis
unionists. The answer of Mr. E'h
ridge was a clincher. "I am speaking
oa a side which has few advocates on
this floor, the side of my country."
The aoble, exalted tone and emphatic
ia which this was uttered, rang
through the hall and afforded a
strange contrast to the thrill, piping
accent of the qnestioaer. Mr. Lake
asked no mora questions aad tho au
dience gave almost a shoit of applause.
Owen Lovrjoy, the rampart Illinois
"abolitionist," followed Mr. Ethridge.
He was a man of considerable brains-
and a good deal of body; and his style
of utterance was of the hyper interne
school. He began his speech at the
lop ef a roTca of xaett prodigious com
pass, aad kept en in the same key,
which it were a mild description to
characterize as a roar. When seme
waggiah member on tho Soathera side
eried "Louder," the effect upon the
audience was convulsing. There stood
Lovejoy, with hit coat off and his col
lar open, hit big, bubhy head thrown
back like a lien at bay, vand brandish
ing his arms aloft, while his whole
body recked and quivered with excite
ment, hurling hit denunciations, not
at the slave power this time, bat at
thoseceisionists. His tremendous
voice rang throu-1; the hall like the
peal of a t ruin pet; and when he rose,
as he sometimes did, to a strain of real
eloquence, in describing the insults to
our flag, it was truly fine to hear. The
speech was wholly diffurentjfrom what
had been rxptcted of Lovrjoy. He
confined himself chirfly to the question
of union aad dissuniou, and made an
intensely patriotic ip.teh.
A revolting tragedy occurred at
Shaw's island, ia San Jaan ronnty,
W. T., on the 2d inst. Jas. Barker
bad gene from his homo at Friday har
bor for a hnat on the island, and when
he did nut return after a lapse of ten
days, Sheriff John Kelly of San Juan
coauty organized a party to search far
the missing man. They arrived at the
cabin of one HughtParkt, aa eccentric
individual, living opposite Friday har
bor. They were refused entrance to
the house, and even a drink of water.
The sheriff then went to Friday FarooF
and swore out a warrant for Parka'
arrest, on the ground of insanity. The
men then formed an abash and watched
the cabin. After some time Parks was
seen lo emerge, dragging the body of a
dead man, whiea was a'tewardi foand
to be that ef missing Jas. Barker,
Parks again secured himself in the
cabin. This took place on thei30th of
January. Fejr tlree days thereafter
the eabin wat closely watched, and.
riaiiiijBeiBg visiuia witaia
ii, Wilbur WilteV9mirUasamMt
tnen, volunteered o enter tfce cabin,
but en finding the ,doer anlocked, hi
became frightened and ran back to kit
comradts.Agaia he approached tha
cabin and attempted to enter, but as he
strpptd into the doorway, the crazy
man shot him tbroagh the head. The
sheriff snd his posse waited no longer,
hut at oaee satarated a bail ef hay
with coal oil and rolled it to the cabin,
where it was fired and tha cabia burnt
to the ground. A second shot was
iied laside tho cabin, but it is not
known whether Parks shot himself or
shot at the men. His charred body
wajs afterward found vin the mint of
the cabin.
Worth Her Weight in Gold.
Mrs. Jesas Castro, aa aged Mexican
lady, new residing at Americon Flag,
in the Santa Catalina mountains, says

an ho, literally speaking, ever cost
her husband her weight in gold. It is
said that in the early gold digging days
f California she was a resident of
Sonora, in nhich State she wat born
and grew to womanhood. When
about the age of seventeen a paternal
uncle, bat a few years herseaior, re
turned with bis cempaaioat, gold laden
from tho EI Dorado of the West, and
became desperately' enamored of her.
He soagbtaher hand in marriage and

became of tho near relationship exist
ing between them, to solemnize
tho marriage. Persuasion being in
vain, he triea the power of geld to win
the Church his war and succeeded only
by the payment of her meight in gold
She at the time weighed 117 pounds;
against her in the scales the glittering
dirt was shoveled. The afSianced hut
band still htd sufficient of this world's
goods to provide a comfortable home,
aad they were married. They lived
happily together and she bore to her
husband eleven children. Ia the
course of years he died and h? mar

It seems to bo generally agretd that
Mr. Cleveland has definitely deter

all the reconstruction actt. Tha

of justice will receive their instruc
tions frem a sympathetic source, Tho
vast patronage of the Interior De

southern geatleman thoroughly cogniz
ant of the fact that heretofore his sec
tion ef the conntry has net enjoyed its
fell measure ef patronage, and heoi
must be allowed to even np, as it
were, by getting rather more than its
share under the preseat administra

of the Government which cn be mors
easily prostituted to base frty uses.
That they will be made wholly sub

age them in their efforts to wholly sup
press any and all manifestations et
Republicanism in that part of tho
country is very apparent to all who
are In' the laid conversant with Dsra-,

Mr. Cleveland to name a Southe'ra

Southern States would be limited.
But in the Departments of the Inte

Chinese Riot ix Eureka.-A Chi-

tween rival companies that hare been
warring for several months. During
tho firing that followed, David Ken
dall, one of Eureka's 'jest citizens, and
a member of the City Council, was
shot dead by! a stray bullet, whilo
passing through the street. Intense
excitement followed. A meeting was
immediately called at Cen'.cnnial Hall,
and a committee appointed to notify
the Chinese to leave the city within
twenty-four hours. The quarters were
visited and notice given to the China
men, who commenced to packtheir
goods at once, and there was great
activity going on ia their preparation
(o lrave. A scaffuld has been erected
ia front of their quarters, from whuh

had performed their duty, and a reso

men be placed in the large warehouse
of the steamshipsCity of Chester and

detained on account of the shifting ot
