The great mass meeting in New
York in which the Irish Americans
of the metropolis of America entered
their protest against tho nomination
of Grover Clevi-land is bound to be
productive of far reaching results.
Fori ears the Democratic pfcrty has
been accustomed to look upon an Irish
American as having no richt to vote
any butthn Democratic ticket.. Act
ing on this the Democracy did not
think itself under any obligation to
take Irish American sentiment into
consideration. Over and over again
has it placed in nomination for State
and local officrp men who were known
to be anti-Irish in tfie'r sentiments.
The nomination of Charles Francis
Adams for Governor of Massachusetts
is a case in point. What the Demo
cracr of Masahuetta did in nomi
nating Adams has been riono in a
more or les inulting manner in every
State in the Union.

story published in the New York "Times,"
that the starving survivors of the Greely
party, crazed by starvation, having fed up
on l lie dead bodies of their comrades, and,
that written documents are in possession
of the Navy Department to substantiate
the terrible narrative, created a great sen
sation here. Admiral Nicholas, Acting
Secretary of the Navy, was shortly beset
by newspaper men anxious to ascertain
something official concerning the publica
tion. The Admiral says that there is ab
solutely nothing in the Navy Department
confirming the story, and he doubts its
truth. It is bossible, how ver, that a re
port of this nature may haTe gone direct
to Secretary Chandler in New Hampshire,
as numerous documents are forwarded to
him without examination here. Some
persons express the opinion quietly that
there is something in the story, nnd say
that it is beginning to be known that the
Greely party was not as harmonious as
has been generally supposed; and that
there is a story connected with the expe
dition which it was intended to conceal .

410 miles, making the total distance from
Omaha to Portland by this route 1,827
miles, and from Chicago to Portland
