Grand Juuy Report. To the Hon.
JLi. R. Webster Judge of said court we
would most respectfully submit this as
our final report: That wo have ex
amined into all charges brought to our
knowledge and passed upon tho same.
We have examined into all cases
brought before us and have passed up
on them according to the instructions
of the court, and the dictation of our
consciences. We have examined the
Cler-s, Sheriffs and Treasurer's offices,
together with the county records and
find them neatly and accurately kept.
VT have examined the county jail
and find it c.eanly and well kept, but
would suggest that some better mean?
ot ventilation be provided if possible.
"Wo have also examined the County
Hospital which does present a favor
able appearance and in our judgment
is not a suitable place for the county
poor. Having no further business we
would most respectfully ask to be
discharged. David Peningkk.
Foreman of the Grand Jury.
Robbers Captured. Two hard
cases named John Lewis and Fred D.
Jarrett, son of the noted stage robber
of that name in Oregon, says the Red
ding "Free Press," were arrested
Thursday evening by officer Crume.
They have been kept un'der surveil
snea for a week past, and are known
to have committed several robberies
ince leaw'ng Portland, Or.,from whence
they hail. Last March they robbed a
Chinese laundry at the railroad front
of ?400, since which time they robbed
a Chinaman at Yreka, from whence
they came to Redding, breaking into
Autenrejth's store at Dog Creek on
their way down, as mentioned iii an
other item. On Saturday night, a
week ago, they rolled a man and se
curod his watch; the victim had $60
inside his clothes which they did not
get. Wednesday night they went
through a store in Chinatown, not
Cutting anything, however. Crume
has been working tho case up quietly,
giving them plenty af rope, when he
beard that they were about to take
tat tra'n Friday morning, when, with
Constable Doney, he made the arrest.
Crume ascertained that they purchased
two yards of coat lining at Simon k
Son's store, and after the arrest found
a mask in the ralice owned by one of
them, which was cut out of one corner
of the lining; he also found the pieces
cut out for the eyes to the mask.
They were taken before Judge Dickin
son yesterday, and admitted their guilt.
when they were taken to Shasta to
await trial. Another man and a wom
an, supposed to ba confederates of the
young robbers, left on the train Thurs
day morning.

The Oriental Lodg of Free Masons
has decided to proceed agiinst Senator
Sharon, Geneial Bnrnps and others
connucted with the exhumation of tho
body of Anson G. Oliver in the Ma
sonic cemeterv, in order to obtain tes
timony in the Sharon Hill divorce cae.
The lodge claims the act was unjusti
fiable, and that the health officer ex
ceeded his duties in doing what was
not subserving any public end toward
the preservation of public health.
The Southern Oregon History was
delivered Thursday and prominent
citizens might havo been sfen collected
together iu excited mobs discussing
their portraits. Of course they ex
pected to see fine looking handsome
young gentlemen but tho truthful hand
of the, photographer presented a rather
meager looking lot of middle aged men
and the . ambitious pioneers turned,
sorrowlully and regretfully to enrono
logical events of their life which con
sisted mainly in tho names of their
numerous progeny. The views of these
same disappointed aspirants for histor
ical .honors that were "taxed without
representation," are enjoying the joke
immensely.
The Jacksonville cemetery in the
careful and painstaking hands of R. S.
Dunlap, who has been sexton for the
past 20 years is one of the most neatly
kept cemeteries in the State. Several
splendid monuments have been erect
ed lately, the last, placed in position
this week, marks the last resting place
of the wife and child of Professor
Merritt, and is an exqusite piece of
workmanship and maiks therpit where
one of the purest, most worthy women
with her infant child, s'eep their last
long sleep. The work was done at the
marble works of J. C. Whipp in Jack
sonville and the taste and skill dis
played in their construction are highly
complimentary to the gentleman who
had the work in charge. A much
needed improvement in the town ceni
etery is that the Jots sliou'd be staked
ard numbered as they are in the Ma-
tonic and Odd Fellows. This would
prevent mistakes and confusion in the
future and also make the selection and
location of lots easier and we hope our
trustees will complete the work they
have so well begun in tho cemetery.
Judge E. B. Watson family re

was warmly welcomed home by his
many friends and will remain here for
the summer. The silver cornet band
serenaded Judge Watwm at the resi
dence of his father-in Jaw, K. Kubli,
on Tuesday evening. Judge Watson
ctrae out and thanked his friends for
this expression of their good will and
invited them into, the parlors. Ele
gant refreshments were tcrved by Mrs.
Kubli and the occasion, was a very
pleasant welcome to theCudge and his
family after their foar years absence.
The teamsters complain that there is
but little back freight ato Ashland,
which makes a cent a pofcd too cheap
for the round trip. It costs more to
ship to San Francisco via Redding, as
the benefit of lower figures not given
for return from Ashland to San Fran
cisco. To ship East, it is cheaper to
send by Ashland, and wool buyers are
making arrangements to, send that
way, in place of San Ffaneisco, which
when completed, wilt feJake plenty of
back freight Webb has been shipping
his wool East by the Northern Pacific
which helps out considerably. The
teamsters also saj the places where
they used to get meals- and horse
feed at 25 cents ahead, pre now getting
civilized like California to raise the
price to 37 cents, and may strike toon
for 50 cents, and other .expenses on the
way have advanced in proportion.

Good Suggestion. While in Jack
sonville last Monday evening, we vis
ited the new court house, now all fin
ished, and were shown through its
different apartments. It is a hand
some and conveniently arranged struct
ure, ono which every citizen of the
county must admire. It is a pity that
cvsy tax payer of the county cannot
rogard it with prido and satisfaction,
untinged with any bitter recollection
of the way in which its construction
was brought about. While the court
house and its offices, however, are
worthy of all admiration as a building.
the jair near is a miserable p'ace, on
account of its lack of ventilation, and
in hot weather must ba noisome and
foul. A better circulation of air
through the cells is needed, and could
be secured by some changos in the
building which would not require
much outlay. "Tidings."
