was indicted by the last grand jury for

Got tiie Contract. L. S. P. 7tlarsh
was the successful bidder for tho con
struction of tho new Court House at
Crescent City, ngreeing to complcto
the building according lo specifications
forS12,000. Tho building is to be of
frame and the foundation of rock and
brick. Messrs. Byars it Guerrin havo
taken a sub-contract for the tho stone
and brie work and will commence at
once. Mr. Marsh started for Crtsccnt
City Iaht Thursday to arrange other
preliminaries and sub-contract some of
the other work to be done.

Since their sessions began thoy have
brought in four indictments as follow s:
Against James Hurd for'burelary; G.
N. Yocum, for assault with intent to
kill; Jacob Worlcw, assault with a
dangerous weapon; John Goldsby,
mayhem. Tho jury is still in session
and has numerous charges to examine
into before they can adjourn. No bill
hasyctbeon found against the stage
robbers as all the witnesses hare not
yet boon found.

Our Natal Day. Our advertising
columns will show the programme for
tho celebration of the Fourth in Jack
sonville and no pains will be spared to
make it tho grandest for many a year.
The fire engino company havo taken
the matter in hand and the citizens
have subscribed a very liberal sura for
expenses so all who come need have no
fear but what it will be a success.
Ths oration will be delivered by Prof.
J. W. Merritt, the Declaration of In
depence will be read by Frank Pressley
and the Jacksonville silver cornet band
will furnish music for the occasion. A
grand procession with triumphal car,
free dinner and numerous afternoon
sports will be features of the occasion,
all to wind up with fireworks in the
evening and a grand ball at Holt's
hall. Everybody is invited and a
Bpecial effort will be made by the man
agers to make it agreeable for all so
that eafh may havo a jolly good time.

C. C. Griffith, charged with horse
steeling, was discharged this week by

San Francisco, June 9. Laurina
Augustina, a 12-year-old daughter of
a farmer of Contra Costa county, gave
birth to a boy baby weighing only one
and a quarter pounds. It measured
five and a half inches in length.

M. Stinson a former Jacksonville boy
who learned the printer's trado in this

well, which wo aro glad to hear.

rogative of appointing bailiffs of hi

sides the fact that bailiffs appointed by
other parties havo not always given

The vote of the first judicial district
for Judge Thaycrs and Webster, and
the veiy handsome vote received by H.
Kelley "of tho famous Kelly-Ruble
suit" who was a candidate for County
Judge on the Republican ticket, got
ting defeated. by only 31 vctes when the
eoun'y gave 370 Democratic majority,
could hadly be called an endorsement
of certain decisions that hove boon
rendered by the higher authority.
Mr. Ashloy Bancroft, collector of
stsuintics and material for Hubert
Howo Bancrofts historical works of
the Pacific Coist, is stopping in our
town for a few days. Before working
up this section however ho will go
south to Josephine, Curry and Del
Norte counties returning in a few
