New Teacher. The directors of
this school district have closed a con
tract with Prof. G. H. Watt, principal
of tho Detroit, Minnesota, High School.

Sad Affiction. Last evening we
heard of the death of throe of George
Yaudcs' children from diphtheria, all
dying nitliin twelve hours of each
other. The family surely have the
sympathy of the community in this
their sad affliction. All died of diph
theria and the remaining one is also
afflicted.
Strawkeiiuy Festival. The ladies
of Jacksonville will jjive a straw-berry
and ice-cream festival at the Club
L room next Thursday night for the
benent of tho Jacksonville Silver Cor
net Band. Some money is still due on
t&eir instruments and the public Bhould
givo them a liberal patronage to help
them pay for them.
New Store. Wra. Anglo has open
ed a store at Medford and will keep
everything usually found in a general
merchandise establishment. He calls
it the "Farmer's, store" and his prices
will carry him out in showing that he
sells at bed-rock rates. Look out for
his advertisement next week and gire

ufacture. George R. Justus shot himself acci
dentally at his home at Grants PassJ
this week but his injuries are not con
sidered dangerous.
A. meeting of the Are company was
called lor last evening to take steps for
celebrating the coming 4lh of July. Full

Tho Republicans of Klamath county
made no nomination for Treasurer,
thereby insuring the re election of E.
R. Reames to that .office.

The Odd Fellow's hall is one of the
nicest in the city now since it has been
painted up and the new carpet laid.
Bunnow did the painting, and Adam
Schmitt laid the carpet and hung the
draperies.
Vote for Capt. Kelley for County
Judge if you want a faithful an honest
official. He is also qualified to make
one of the best Judges .the county has
ever had and he is a man that never
hhirks a dutv.
Barruch Fiblier has got his store at
Medford opened out in one of Byar's
new bricks and is now ready for busi
ness. He keeps nearly everything but
will make a speciality of goods required
by the fair sex.
Several capitalists of Portland and
others of East Portland are making up
a party to visit Jackson county for the
purpose of making investments in land
and establishing several industries in
the Rogue river valley.
Being crowded lor space we fail to
publish the proceedings of tho Repub
lican convention in full, but the ticket
nominated will be found at tho head of
our columns. Everything passed off
harmoniously and the ticket gives gen
eral satisfaction.
Hon. Wm. Kahler, who once honor
ed Jackson county as her representative
to the Legislature, is our nominee for
Treasurer. He has the ability and
honesty to fill this office of trust and all
who know him will not fail to cast a
vote for "old pap Kahler."

We acknowledge a pleasant" call last
Thursday from M. J. Green who has
been acting as railroad agent at the
front since railroad construction has
been going on. E. C. Kane has been
appointed agent at Ashland, and Mr.
Green will roport at headquarters to
take another position iu the employ of
the company.
We owe an apology to our readers
this week for the scarcity of local news
but as county elections are only held
once every two years we hope our pa
trons will excuse us. Onlj one more
issue of the Sentinel remains before
the close of the campaign and after
that we will try and ehroniclo all the
news of the county.
When Mr. Jacobs gets through ex
pftining his bad faitb to Charles Prim
and that gentlnman's friends, in regard
to his promise of the deputyship in the
event of his election, and how he fail
ed and utterly refused to keep his
promise after the election he can then
explain his conduct towards Mr. Jack
son; and tell how he repeatedly prom
ised that if elected once he would be
satisfied and do all he could to assist
Jackson two years hence; and how he
repeatedly since that time and at Mr
Jackson's own house but a short time
sinco assured him that he was not and
would not be a candidate and that he
would assist him all he could.
And it would not bo out of place
after making public all these broken
pledges, for him to tell the truth once
and say that he has been systematic
ally fixing up the precincts ever since
his election, and in the faco of his dec
larations to Jackson to secure his re
nomination. This will ba an unfortunate cam
paign for Mr. Jacobs and before it is
over it will not only be made plain to
tho public that he is unfit and incom
petent for the office but that he is mor
ally unworthy of any offiae.
That Brief.
As an. electioneering document abrief
puporting to come from Hon. George
II. Williams and B. F. Dowell, in the
celebrated Kelly-Ruble case, is being
extensively circulated throughout the
county with the hope of injuring
Kelley. The subjoined letter ex
plains itself and we publish it in full:

I liave to say in answer to your kind
letter of the DQth ult. that I am in no way
responsible for the document entitled
"Brief of Geo. II. Williams and B. F.
Dowell. Attorneys lor the State of Oregon
and Wm. Ruble." It was prepared and
my name affixed to it without my knowl
edge or consent, I enclose a copy of my
brief in the case uf Kelly vs. Ruble ct al.
which as you will see, 'is confined exclu
sively to the questions of law and fact in
that case, and it was not until after the
argument and decision therein that the
document in question made its appear
ance. Most of my brief is incorporated
into that document but I emphatically
deny all responsibility foi the personal at
tacks and reflections which it contains. I
have not made or helped to make a brief
in any contempt cape before the Supreme

standing as a man and that his qualifi
cations for the position to which he
was called by both parties on Judge
Hantia's resignation have been fully
tested. He is before the people of
this district with a reputation that the
most bitter partizan cannot cavil at,
and will honor a position, in every
cense nos political, that should be
held above party prejudice.

Mrs. Abernethy widow of ex-Governor
A bernethy, of Oregon,, died on
Friday morning, May 2d, 1884, at the
residence of her son-in-law, Col. Hodges,
in New York city. Mrs. Abernethy
was a pioneer of 1880, and is well
remembered by many of our people.
The only son of the deceased, Wm.
Abernethy, resides on a farm, near
Portland.
