In the Field. A surveying party
composed of Itufus S. Moore, It. H.
Klippel, John Klippel and several
others started for tho headwaters of
Rogue River on a surveying expedi

A Close Shave. Little Charley
Koland while flaying on a vwgon near
his home this week fell off' and one of
the wheels of the wngon passed over
him before he could be rescued from
hit dangerous position. Strange to
ay he was not hurt much and is
around again.
Mat Day Ball. Mart Hurst will
give a party at his house on Antclojc
on the evening of the 1st of Slay and
extends a cordial invitation to all to
come and have n cod lime. Tickets,
2 50, which will also include horse
feed for all vln come from any
part of the county.
Hyuexcal. Joseph Solomon and
Miss Rosa Mensor, both of this place,
were married at the residence of A.
Fisher in San Francisco on Sunday
last many friends of the bride and
groom being present. We acknowledge

TnE Entertainment. The benefit
entertainment fur the Jacksonville
Silver Cornet Band at Holt's Hull
last Saturday was well attended and
the performers all did well for aina
teurs. As there is yet considerable
due on the instruments another enter
tainment or pic-nic will be held on the
first of May. Tin1 receipts last Satur
day night netted about 30.
Catholic Entertainment. The
entertainment given by the pupils of
the Sister's school last Thursday even
ing was largely attended by the cili

both financially and otherwise. Little

Ashland Agent. E. C. Kane for
a long tune general time-keeper for
the 0. i C 11. R. Co. on construction
work, has received the nppoiiitment-as
ag-nt and railroad operator for the
company at Ashland. Tire selection
is a good out as Mr. Kane has nlvvHys
proved himself an eth'cient and obliging
official and we don't think he will be
found wanting in his new position.
Will Leave Us. Ilen'y Judge
has purchased the harness and saddlery
establishment at AshUnd formerly
owned by Chas. K. Kluin and will
move there iir a couple, of weeks to con
duct the business. He will jlosehis
hop here and move his stock of good
to the Ashland stoie. Mr. Judg? is
one of our best citizens uud we are
worry to see him leave but what is our
losg will be Ashland's gain. Ed.
Helms will accompany him when lie
moves and finish his apprenticeship in
our neighboring town.
Sent Below. Wong Hung Chang,
convicted of robtipry in Josephine
county, was this week sentenced to a
term of five vears in the penitentiarv
by Judgo Webster and is now on his
way to Salem in charge of F. M.Nick
erson. This is the same Chinamen
that ran away from Waldo not long
since, with the wife of another China
tnau taking along several scads of sil
ver belonging to other parties at the
atne time. The arrests were trade at
Redding, Cal., try Constable Biidsey
' and at the trial the woman turned
State's evidence.

New Quautehs Ordered. Not
withstanding the reported change of
militry quarters from Klamath nnd
Bidwell to some point near the State
line, as reported by the Yreka Journal
and published in another column of
this paper, Mr. L. S. P. Marsh in
forms us that he has been offrciallv no
tified that he is tho successful bidder
for the contract to build new cavalry
quarters at the first mention-d post.
This would hardly indicate that Fort
Klamath is to be abandoned as no im
provements would then be ordered.
Mr. Marsh built the infantry quarters
at this post about three years ago and
put up some fine buildings.

We hear of quite a number from
hero who contemplate going to the
May Day party at Henry Bauten's
place on Poorman's creek next Thurs
day. The new' fire bell was received and
put up over the engine house this week
and was tried last Wednesday evening
to call out the department for regular
drill.
A short campaign is promised this
time as neither party has yet called a
county convention "and there is little
over five weeks between now and elec
tion day.
Marshal McDaniel put several par

drunk and disorderly and the town

the Bronze Copper mines in Josephine
county with a view to start up again
the works there. What tho plan of
operations pioposed by said party is,
is not made public as yet, hut tho in
spectroir of the mine with a view to
open it up shows an interest which
still lives, while for several years the
mine has been unwrought. Tue
Hronze mine was at one time in the
hands of a San Francisco Company,
which run it a part of two years but,
expensive freights on tho necessary
machinery was the difficulty, and also
the ore by trains was too-high for profit.
But since the completion of the rail
road to Southern Oregou all those
high rates cease.
We learn from G". W. Smith, the
Liukville Hotel man, who came here
with tho Linkville mail last Friday,
that the military forces of Camp Bid
well and Fort Klamath are to be con
solidated, and headquarters removed
to Lost River Gap, 10 miles east of
Liukville, close to the California and
Oregon boundary line. This will
prove highly beneficial to Liukville,
and be of much benefit to Yreka, the
nearest point for connection with the
main tiuuk mail route between Oregon
and California. In addition to this
change, fifty soldiers have been ordered
to the assistance of the Liukville peo
ple in improving the wagon road down
Klamath liver towards Yreka. After
tho first of July next, there will also
be a tri-vveekly stage lino between
Yreka and Linkville, which will bring
considerable business and travel to
this place. "Yreka Journal."
Committed Suicide. San Francisco
papers of the 16th inst. give an account
of the dialh of C. S.chistfelin, formerly
of this county, which s'ates that he
committed suicide. We publish the
Chronicle's dispatch below:
Clinton SchieiTelin, father of Ed.
Schieffelin, the discoverer of Tomb
stone and the explorer of the Yukon
river, committed suicide early this
morning by shooting himself with a
revolver, the ball entering the fore
head and passing through to the back
of the head. Tie deceased had been
complaining of feeling ill several days,
but as he was of a genial disposition
the rash act takes all his friends by
surprise. He was a native of New
York City and 61 years old.

Delegates from several precincts in
the county met at the Court House last
Saturday and plected delegates to the
State convention to meet in Portland
on tho 30th inst. A. P. Hammond
was chospn chairman of the meeting
and V. H. Atkinson secretary. The
delegates elected to the Slate conven

The CENSUS. We acknowledge re
ceipt of the full census reports of 1880
through the courtsey of Senator Dolph,
and they will always prove valuable
as a book of reference. The popula
tion of Oregon is given at 174,768 of
which Jackson county has 8,154.
Jacksonville has 839 and Ashland 842.
The county was in debt 10,480 when
the census was taken. There are 5G5.
farms in the county, 90,855 acres of
improved land valued at 1,697,105.
The value and the estimated value of
all farm productions (sold, consumed
or on hand) for 1879, is. 503.779.
The native born population is 7,222
and the foreign 932. The assessed
valuation of the State in 1880 was
32,584,966 on real estate and 19,
937,118 on personal property. Jack
son county had 760,918 on real
estate and 688j705 on personal prop
erty. o
