PILLS yr.TL'wrygf sy W' "1H ii ESIS Good News- A LINE OF STEAMERS TO HE PUT ON BE TWEEN SALEM AND ASTORIA TO CARRY WHEAT. We have received from reliable nu thority the news that the City of Sa lem company, composed of the leading citizens, grain merchants and farmers of Marion county, have made arrange ments to put on a line of steamers this summer between Salem and Astoria. The citizens and farmers, generally, havo for a number of jearjipasl.'been trying to derive some means whereby they could get their wheat to market without having to pay exhorbitant freight and storage rates. Tho recog nize the fact that it is much cheaper to load ships at Astoria than at Port land, paying, as they have been com pelled to, exhorbitant prices for towing ships to Portland to load, besides the impositions practiced upon them by Portland merchants. And, as a mat ter of self protection, they have organ ized a company and filed articles of in corporation in tho office of tho Secre tary of State, for the City of Salem company. They will build a number of steamers and barges, and also con struct grain warehouses in tho city, and will hereafter, ship all the. grain of tho Willamette valley direct to Astoria. This will save the fanners of Oregon over two thirds of their freight money and enable them tb havo their wheat loaded and on tho way to market at least a month sooner than heretofore. It will also bo a great benefit to As toria and will assist in building up our city. "Astoria Independent," Writing from tho Hood River, Ore gon, section to the Dalles "Mountain eer," a correspondent says: Come, you water soaked webfef t, out of the cloud of fog and mist that prevades jou latitude, and take refjge under tlia lee of the snow-capped refrigerat ing summits of Mounts Hood and Adams, which stand as sentinels to guard back the ocean mist. Conio and fill your lungs with this pure, and brac ing air and allow it to drive out that poisonous vapor which is rooting dis ease in your systom. Ye, come from the buncu grass region and compare our well watered and well timbered country with your dry sago brush plains, and when you do come be sure you stay long enough to get the sand out of your eyes, so that -youran see well and appreciate our beautiful scenery. Take a drink of our waler right out from under the snow banks of the mountains, and if it gives yon malarial fever we will pay the doctor's bill.... We havo an agricultural so ciety in our district, and although yet in its infancy, it is in a flourishing condition. Besides the direct benefit we derive from an exchange of ideas and comparisons of agricultural ex periments, it creates a desire to excel, and this encourages industry We admit our soil is not as good as yours for raising wheat. In the Crst place, wheat raisins dosen't seem to pay any one but the manufacturer of agricul tural implement?, and the transporta tion companies; and secondly, it is too much a spontaneous system of agricul tural production, and fails. to cultivate a thirst for a diversified knowledge of agriculture and we are apt lo grew stupid in its pursuit. We would rath er raise fruit, vegetables and other line marketable productions, and this is just what our climate is adapted to. The largest match factory in the world is located in Sweden. It con tains an onormous novel machine which produces, it is said, 1,000,000 boxes of matches daily. Blocks of wood are fed in at one end of the ma chine and at the othor end the matches coce out arranged in boxes ready for pacning. Twenty steamers and eight sailing vessels last summer delivered the wood from which the matches are msde. A jealous man can't be too careful when riding in a street car with his wife. In Providence, tho othor day a gentleman noticed a man on the op posito side of the car staring at his wife, and thinking I hat ho was a mash er, crossed over and slapped his face. Imagine his confusion and surprise on aiscoventtg mat; mo man wnom lie slapped was stone blind and had to be led about by a little girl. i The Willamette Conference of the Congregational Church will be held at For est Grove, Oregon, onthe 23d and 24th of this month. Oregon State Prison. The Salem "Talk" furnish! the fol lowing: The number of convicts in the Oregon State Penitentiary at Salem has been gradually augmented until at present there are two hundred and foitj-oue individuals, in durance vile within the prison walls. Hither to the institution has only afforded cell room for 216 lodgers, hut now twenty two iron compartments are in course of construction, which will supply ac commodations for forty four addition- ai inmates, a visitor to the prison -cannot fail to be impressed with the appearance of cleanliness, order and discipline which U everywhere con spicuous, both in the prison buildings and around the grounds. There, too, are the cells appropriated to fe male prisoners, and it is worthy of re mark that of the two hundred and forty odd State convicts, only one is a woman. She is the notorious Carrie Bradley sent down from Portlaud about two years ago, and sentenced to twelve years, imprisonment for com plicity in the murder of a young man in that city. Her features havo changed somo Unco she was firat in carcerated. Her faco is pallid, cara worn and melancholy now, and in her eyes thero is a sorrowful, half sinister expression of penitential remorse. She smiles occasionally, however, and seems to forget tho iron bars across her window and tho eternally frown ing prison walls. Tho pro portion of the young and middle age is very lare. There aro but few aged convicts. The apartments of eovcr. al young prisoners are very neatly o'ecorated with small mirrors and orna mental nicknacs, which would seem to indicate that uomo friend has remem bered them even when they are placed beyound the palo of liberty. But most of thi cells aro entirely destitute of everything except the prison furni ture, and perhaps a nowspaper or book. The apartment where Sadler and Minsingroder, two murderers, aro serving out a life sentence is particu larly desolate, and the prisoners are extremely low and repulsive in ap pearance But very few, indeed, of all tho two hundred and forty con victs show nny signs of mu:h educa tion, and tho greater portion appear rather inferior and depraved by nature. A New Use for Sawdust. Mr. L. L. Brown, of Reedsville, an enterprising youns farmer, who is a constant reader of the best agricultural papers iff the country, thus gives his experience in the use of tawdust for potatoes: "Having read of th great benefit of sawdust in growing potatoes, I determined last season to test its merits. My soil wa3 heavy and rich, and tho season very wet. On a part of the field I put a quart or more of sawdust in each hill before planting the seed. The other part was planted in the usual way. Both patches wrrt equally well cultivated. The result, when digging time came, was that those planted with the sawdust yielded much better, were clean and smooth, and free from scales or worm-holes, while those in the other portion of tho field were the reverse. It is my opin ion that in a very dry season tho saw dust would prova to be much mora beneficial, as it preserves the moisture." Agricultural World. Sam and the Dude. Ho was a dude of the extreme kind. He couldn't have been more so. His overcoat was short, his undercoat long, his collar high, his trousers so tight that it would seem he must have greased his legs to get into them, his shoes ointed. As he entered the bar room at tho Occident hotel everybody looked at him, and a smile went round. The dog "Sam" was in the room at tho time. As tho dude paused at the bar the dog went up to him, sniffed of him, looked up at him once and walked away with dropping tail and an air of intense disgust. The disgust probably arose from the fact that the dud wasn't the person the dog was looking for, but the animal's wholo appear ance seemed to say: "This let's mt out. I can't stand that thing!" And the crowd howled with laughter. The Oregon wotl clip this ypar will be far above the averags of othor sea sons, says tho Albany Democrat. It will be much superior in quality, ow. ing to the goad condition of the nooki.
