President Arthur's Din
ner's. jrteri Wc'dnesdsy evenihffthe Presi
dent will give the eight and last of his
Congressional dinners, thus completing
the list. All th Senators and Con
gressmen, with their wives, will then
have dined in state at the White
House, and although the House of
Representatives is" larger by thirty
members than it ever was before, Gen
eral Arthur is the first President who
has succeeded in feeding the entire
National Legislaturo in a single win
ter. Under former administrations a
-Congressman conpideced.bimself luckv
if he got an invitation one during his
tf rm of four years, nnd hundreds have
entered and left the House of Repre
sentatives without once seeing the col
or of the White House china. With
that courtesy which distinguishes all
his acts, the President has taken par
ticular pains to show tiie new Congress
men attention, and some of the most
obscure members ot the House were in
vited to the first dinner, an honor
which they fully appreciate and will
never forget. The dinners are very
elaborate and formal, and as many new
members were not anticipating such
di.-tinction, they were caught without
dress suits; but there are places here
where thej can be hired, and it is
known that the same pigeon tailed coat
has appra'ed at Stato dinners several
times this winter on the backs of diff
rent men.
These eight dinners have not cost
less than 10 a plate, including wine,
and as between 59 and 60 guests havu
.been entertained on every occasion the
President is out of pocket more than
85000 for his hospitality. The White
House cook is the very best in "Wash
ington, and receives a salary of $1800
a year. The steward was for twelve
years the servant of Senator Conkling,
and is one of the handsomest colored
men in the country. The viands the
President has set before bis guests have
been rare and costly, and the menus
fire always elaborate. Although Presi
dent Arthur is not a hearty eater him
self, he knows what is good and is ex
tremely particular about all tha ap
pointments of his table. There have
never been such entertainments at the
White House as he has given, and Sen
ator Anthony, who is authority on
dining, pronounces the Presidential
dinners perfection. Washington corr.

THEIU LAND GRANT TAXED BT frfrf SEC
RETAUY OF TIIE INTERIOR.
Some time ago the Houso of Repre
sentatives called upon the Secretary of
the Interior for information regarding
the definito and final location of the
Northern Pacific Railroad, and as to
whether the Northern Pacific Company
has claimed, or is claiming, any of the
lands on which homestead and pre
emption entries had been made within
the limits of the grant opposite any
part of the railroad prior to the time
of its definite location; and if so,
whether such claims are beir.g con
sidered by the department. The Sec
retary of the Interior has replied to
this inquiry, inclosing a letter from
the Commissioner of the General Land
Office giving the information required.
The Commissioner savs that the North
ern Pacific has been definitely located
from a point in the State of Wiscon,
sin, about fifty miles west of the Mon
treal river, to a point near Wallula,
W. T., and from Portland Or., to Ta
coma, W. T.; the branch line has been
definitely located from a point near the
city of Yakima, W. T., to a junction
with the main line near Ainsworth in
the same territory. A map showing
the main line as constructed from a
junction with the Lake Superior and
Mississippi Railroad in Minnesota to
the Red River of the North, a distance
of 228.2 miles, was received Novem
ber 21, 1871. This map was accepted
as a definite location of the road, no
evidence of such location having been
presented prior to that time. Other
maps of the main line have also been
filed and were explained by the Com
missioner. The total length of located
main line is 1,888.65 miles.
"As we go to press," facetiously re

Berner has been resting quietly in
prison all dav. The gates had to" be
closed against the public for the chapel

curious gazers that appeared. No vio

"Yreka Journal."
"Sit" and "Set." Many of the ag
ricultural journals are sorely troubled
to know whether a hen sits or sets. If
some editor of dignity would set a hetr
on the nest, and the editors would let
her sit it would be well for the world.
Now, a man, or womsn either, can set
a hen, although they cannot sit her,
although the old man might sit ore
them by the hour if they would allow.
A man cannot set on a wash bench;
but he could set the basin on it, and
neither tho basin nor the grammarian
would object.
A few days ago a mail agent on the
north bound postal car put his hand
into a ma:l bag to pull out the mail for
sorting, when he was frightened al
most out of his boots by one of the
"packages" grabbing him with its
teeth and claws. It proved to be a
hungry cat, with a label on its neck
addressed to a lady in Portland. That
part of Uncle Sam's mail never reached
its destination.
