P.N.FICKE. City Market, Jacksonville, Jan. 20,1893. lyfSlSI Jfeivs About Yillard- New York, March 13 Special. The "Times" says: Steps have been taken to cancel the lease of the Oregon snd California Railroad Company to the Oregon and Transcontinental Com pany. It is said the desired result will be brought about by mutual consent. The Oregon and Transcontinental has stopped the work of construction, thus .breaking its contract with the Oregon and California Company, which calls for the completion, of eighty-seven milestmore of road by June 30. The Oregon and Transcontinental Company was obliged to stop construction work because it could not borrow any mors money. Philadelphia, March 13. Special. The "Times'" New York specia', speak ing of the rapid disintegration of what were a few months ago known on the streets as "Villard," sajs: "The Ore gon Improvement Company still re-' mains in its old quarters, near the Northern Pacific, but has few if any interests in common with the latter company. In fact its intetests are mainly diverse, for the renter of its operations are in Seattle, a rival town to the Northern Pacific's terminal town ofTacoma. The Oregon and Califor nia company is now established in tho "Post" building, where is also the office of Henry Villard. He is still president, but as all its lines are leased to the Oregon and Transcontinental he has no oflicial duties. If the lease should be thrown up, as it is predicted on the streets, he would be again just where he was in 1878, at the head of a single local road in Oregon. He is going to Europe early in April, to re cruit his health, and, thu people be lievp, to put on foot souio big financial scheme. He looks well, physically, and begins to walk once more with tho confident tread of a roan with resources and a hopeful future. The East Portland Vindicator gets off the following: A gentleman enter ad a car at a way station and in qoing down the aisle accidental.; knocked to the floor the-hatof an uncouth, rough looking chap who lay with his 'head projecting over the arm-rest. "I beg your pardon, sir," remarked the gen tleman politely. "You want to be kind of-careful how you stagger 'rouud," replied the illnaturrd rough as the gentleman passed on. "Venture to say he never asked any one's pardon," said a passenger to another next to him. "You're mistaken there," re plied the latter, "he begged mine once, and very politely, too." "Must havo been some unusual circumstance." "Yes, inJeefljTie was In the state pris on and wanted to get out. Rut I am now sorry that I pardoned him." "And you are " "Ex Governor Thay er, of Oregon." Hon. -Sol. Hired), Chairman of the Republican State Central Committee, concludes the call for the convention as follows: "The Republican votars of the State, without regard to past political differences, who are in favor of elevating and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to the masses of the people, eSectually protecting all human rights, in every section of our common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the State by maintaining a govern ment pledged to these objects and privileges, aro cordially invited to unite in selecting delegates to the Re publican State Convention." The Sterling mine, which started up a few days since, is running with a full headof water. Thete is a heavy body ef snow in the Siskiyou mountains, which it is expected will furnish water for a four months' run. The Waldo mine and the Ennis Todd-Comeron mine, tha largest in Josephine county, are also running with full heads of water, and expect a four months' run. Last seanon the water only lasted for six weeks, the shortest water season in the history of Oregon. Placer mining is at a standstill for lack of water. The output of these mines, should the water hold out as expected, will be considerable. "Oregonian." We love and be iove only partially till we know thoroughly. Grant that long aequaintanca reveals weakness; it also reveals strength and awakens sympathy. . -- A woman's lot is made for her by the love she accepts, Simple Remedies. Half a tablo teaspoonful of common table salt dissolved in a little cold wa ter and drank will instantly relievo "heartburn" or dyspepsia. If taken every morning before rbreakfast, in creasing tho quantity gradually to a teaspoonful of salt and a tumbler of water, it will in a few days cureany ordinary case of dysdepsia, ifatthn Fame time due attention is paidito the diet. There is no better remedy than the above for constipation. As a gar gle for sore throat it is equal to chlor ate of potash and is entirely safe. It may be used as often a desirtd, and if a little is swallowed each time it will havo a beneficial effect on tho throat by cleansing it and allaying the irritation. In doses ot one to four teaspoonfuls in half a pint of tepid wa ter it acts promptly as an emetic, and, in cases of poisoning, is always ou hand. It is an excellent remedy for bites nnd stings of insects. It is a valuablo astringent in'hemorrliages for bleeding after the extracting of t'eth'. It has both cleansing and healing pro perties, and is therefore a most ex cellent application for superficial ulcer ations. Mustard ii another valuable reme dy. No family should bo without it. Two or three teaspoonfuls of ground mustard stirred into half a pint of wa ter acts as an emetic ery promptly, and is milder and easier to take than salt and water. Equal parts of ground mustard and flour or meal made into'a paste with warm water and spread en a thin piece ef muslin, with another pieco of muslin laid over it, forms thn indispensable "mustard plaster." It is almost a specific for colic when ap plied for a few minutes over the "pit of the -stomach." For all internal pains and congestions, there is no rent edy of such general utility. It aets as a counter irritant by drawing tho blood to the surface; henco in severe cases of croup a small mustard plaster should be applied to the back of tho child's neck. Tho same treatment will relieve almost any case of headache. A mustard plaster should bo moved about over the spot to be acted upon, for if left in one place it is liable to blister. A mustard plaster acts as well when at considerable distance, frcra the aflecttd part. An excellent substitute for mustard plasters is wh&t is known as "mustard leaves." They come a dozen iu a box and are about lour by five inches. They are perfectly dry, and will keep for a long time. For use it is only necessary to dip one in a dish of water for a minute and then apply it. Common baking soda is the best of all remedies in cases of scalds and burns. It may be used on the surface of thb burned place either dry or wet. When .applied promptly the senBe cf relief is magical. It seems to with draw the heat and with it the pain, and tho healing process soon com mences. It is the best application for eruptions caused by poisonous ivy anil other poisonous plants, as also fur bites and stings of insects. Owing to colds, over fatigue, anxie ty and various other causes, the urina is often scanty, highly colored and more or less loaded with phosphate, which settle ou the bottom of the ves sel on cooling. As much foda as can be dipppd up with a ten-cent piecr, dissolved in a half a glass of cold via. ter and drank every three hour, will soon remedy the trouble and cause re lief to the oppressisn that always ex ists from the interruption of the nat ural flea of urine. This treatment should not be continued more than 24 hours. "Hall's Journal of Health." Washington, Marsh 14. Senator Slater reported to the Senate to-day a. substituto for the bill to delare tho forfeiture of the land grant of the Ore gon Central Railroad Company, which provides that the land adjacent to and co terminus with the uncompleted por tions of said railroad shall be declared forfeited and restored to the public) domain, and opened for sale and settle ment. It contains an -additional pro viso that the pricu at which the lands thus forfeited and restored to publia domain shall be thn same as hitherto fixed for even numbered sections of this grant.
