Undoubtedly the largpstjshow over organized is positively coming West this season. "W. W. Cole, the Prince supreme of showmen has determined to astonish tho Great West trit'i fir the largest exhibition that has yet had an existence. Three years have tlapsed since Cole, and his magnificent- shows circus and menagerie visited the Mountain Ran go and Pacific Slop?. Tho intervening time has been pro ductivo of surprising results. Last teason the great show outstripped all worthy rivals, and created an im pression which served to establish it self as the most varied and intensely interesting amusement enterprise in the world. This season it will put it? former greatness to blush, by a perfect deluge of freshly added features and increased proportions. More men, mora horses, uioro performers, and a larger canvas being required. Three circus rings and an elevated stage are necessary for the production of the various novelties within a reitsonablu time. Representatives of nearly every race of people have been secured and will appear in acts cjiaracteu'stic of their country. Twe'vo Bedouin Arabs are one of the leading attractions in this Ethnological Cqngrcss, and their performances have created a furon; since their arrival in America under contract with Mr. Cole. Yet the most notable feature of this more than marvelous show is the exhibition of a spotted or sacred elephant, imported direct from the Royal stables of a Eurmesb King, where scores of there strange animals aro held in saccd rev erence and guarded niyht and da' by mahout?, who administer to their every want, real or imaginary. The one se- by MrifcoriLmirHjL. an J pnr- rsr4HBPrVn'), wj-;c the somewhat lon. 'uanje of Lalluh Rook, and is particularly remarkable for the variety and number of the fa negated spots which udoru her peison. White, salmon and white blue aro the prevailing colors which decorate the Ifgs, fitnks, sides and trunk of her ladyship whose uuormous carcase is, according to Buddhist belief) supposed to contain the souls of several departed king and their long line of progeny. A striking feature of La'lah Rook's appearance is the fact that a broad white stripe extends from her oes down nearly two tho end of her trunk, which gives her thejproud distinction of being the only "bald faced" elephant ever seen, even in the land of elephant idolatry. Aside from the rare and expensivo attractions already mention ed, Cole has Samson, the larc-.t ele pliant ever in criptivity, aertiblo mas todon; and a young lady whose daring walks on the ceiling havo won for bur the somewhat suggpstivu litle of tho "Iluinan Fly." The rarest of animals, the greatest! of artists, the costliest ot features, are the distinguished poinU and policy of this enormous exhibition, which ha3 now become a recognized National Institution backed by un limited capital and creating a joyous holiday wherever it finds a populace to warrant its actual daily expanses of 3,500. This city has been elected as one of its exhibiting points, which will ba visited durinjf the summer. An ox conductor tells a Leadville "Chronicle" reporter how some pcrters in sleeping cars accumulate wealth: ''A Pullman puvspngerx jumps aboard late al soino intermediate station, lie is tired and slrrpy. Ho wants to go to bed a once. Usually the berths are made up. 'Why, certainly,' the porter says, 'tumblo right in. Just give me -,our fare and when the conductor comes along I wili turn it over to him.' Tha passenger is delighted with the courlesy. He pays the Pullman ami car fare 10 or S20, as the ease may be and retires for the night. Mean while the porter has got a number of trip checks, most lively from the hats of some feilows who are dozing away in tho smoker, and preiently return ing, he inserts one under the rim of the belated traveler. The train con ductor comes around in the morning, takes up his checks and everybody is hajipy." A new steam collier is being enn structcd'tof the Coos Bay coal mines, and tho outlook for a greater develop meat of theses nliuas is favorable. Gen. Shermanrs Simple Campaign Habits': Sherman's habits during his cam paigns were of the simplest. He roso early in the morning, and was up lata a night. In the face of the enemy, live hours' sleep sufficed him. Before the reveille sounded, he was ofteutin the saddle and out On the aioaUex posed part of his -line. Theiorueraf were always to .aronsa him at any hour of the night, if reports cama in During the Atlantic campaign he set the example to his tioops of discard ing tents and reducing baggage to a minimum. There was but one tent attached to'Jiis headquarters, and tha't was used by bin adjutant general and his clerks. With his staff ha slept on the ground under a tent lly, which was stretched at night over a pole resting in the crotches of soma convenient saplings. It used to be said that his h-adquarlers were in a candle box, be cause one or two small boxes, emptied of tho candlts they originally had con tained, served to transport his papers-. Tho soldiers called him "Old Tecuins" and "Unc'e Billy," the latter nickname coming into general use m tho army during the march to tho sea. At his headquarter.- a single sentry stood guard; but nobody, whether officer of private soldier, who wanted to ejiek to the general, was stopped. He always had a cordial und encourag ing word for the roldiers when he rods aloug tho lines in front of the enemy or passed a marching column. For the details of military etiquette and ceremony he eared nothing; but for sturdinefs in action and endurance in lnrd marching, lie had a quick eye and a ready wotd of praife. He was un usually communicative and- outspoken, unless his plans demanded secrecy. Sometimes his friinKness deceived the enemy more than concealment; -would K7;--o done. After no captuted bavannulrjha scat a flag-o.truceiboat to Charleston and gave permission to go upon it to tho families of Confeder tito officers who winhed to get inside the Coniederato lines. Among the applicants for pos-.es was the wif of a Contederale surgeon, who told the gfnerul she wanted to go to Columbia, S)uth Carolina, 'o join her husband. "Don't go to Columbia, madam," ex claimed Sherman. "I shall be thero myself in a few dC with my wholo army. You are at lil -ty to tall that to your rebel, friends in Charleston." The lady mado haste to communicate this information to the Confederate commanders in Charleston as toon as she armed; but all agreed that, if Sherman actually meant to march to Columbia, he would never have said so. His advance reached Columbia a day after the surgeon's wife arrived. E. V. Stualley in The Century. We learn ftom the Coon Bav papers, that last week, marshal Rhoden of Marshfa'rld, by ordrr of the Pacific coast detective agency, arrested a man by the name of Clus. A. Stanley, who is accused of having murdered his brother in law, A. Patten, in Cowlitz county Wasbini-toii Ter, in Nov. 1832. After lining arrested he admitted that ho committed tho deed, but claimed that tho extenuating circumstances connected with it, wouldvxhoneratu liiin from any crime. Mis true name is A. J. Leonard, and from hivoccount it seems that Putteu was extremely brutal to his wife without any caxix, and that on the day of the killing Patten pulled old man Leonard, who is 70 iears of agt, and was living with him, out of bed und kicked and abused him, which so exasperated the accused that he seized a double barreled shut gun and emptied both barrel, into Patten. If this story is true, tho facts would almost exhouerate him, before a jury. Lait Monday night John Cantrull entered the . billiard saloon of J1'. Lemke, says "Tho Dalles Sun," armed with a double barreled shotgun, und without word or warning shot it tho proprietor. Luckily a bystander struck the gun before it was dis charged, somewhat varying tha aim. He is held under $500 bonds. Big kick in Whatcom county, W. T.: thero is a ton of mail accumulated at the New Whatcoui postoffice for towns along the Nooksack, which tha mail contractor, Victor Roeder, re fuses to carry, because, as he alb-gcrr, there is no money in his route. c-i -.... o:e- -sr-s.
