Storms and Floods, etc- A fearful wind storm visited Ma con, Augusta, Columrus, Atlanta, Birmingham and other places in Go., on last Tuesday, doing immense dam age. Several lives wpre lost. A dispatch from TJniontown, Pa, dated Feb. 20, says a little mining vil lage, four miles north of here was tins morning the scene of a most terrilh'c explosion eve' known in this city. Tbe Collinsville Coal and Iron Com pany here gives employment to about 100men."Uoal is obtained by means of a shaft, which reaches the mines at a distance of 400 feet from the surface. This morning the part of the force who worked all night left the mines, a little efter 3 o'clock, and seventy others took their places, making the usual morning shift. About half-past 6, while the men were digging, with out warning, there occurred an ex plosion that convulsed the mine iti every apartment, nd threw tho men into the utmost consternation. Tho scene of the explosion is fully SCO feet from the bottom of the shaft" and 1200 from the surface opsning. Yet ill's report was heard on (he outiide for a considerable distance, and caused such a jar that the top of the derrick, 100 feet high, was knocked off. Two mules were standing at the bottom of the shaft, SOO feet from the explosion, and the rush of air blew one of them through a wooden cag, shattering it to pieces. A blizzard through Minnesota and Iowa on last Tuesday, delayed trains and it is feared caused the loss of sev eral lives.! A terrific galp at Louisvillp, Ky , on the heights of the Ohio fluod, on last Tuesday is thus defcrjbed in the dis pStches: The worst galo ever known is sweep ing this part of the Ohio valley from end to end, carrying destruction nnd death every blast. 'About six o'clock a pouring rain changed in drifting sleet, and it in now b'owing at a re locity of forty miles per hour. Capt. Divan, in charge of tho life saving station, cays that the houses in the submerged portion of Louuville known as "The Point" are falling by th Kcore. Tho uppor stories of many of these houses arc occupied by at least 250 people. It is impossible to reach any more of these people with boats. We hare already removed some, but can take away no more. No boat can reach them. No boat could live to reach them. They are surely doomed. I wouldn't venture ten cpnts on their es cape. Every packet on the Ohio river that cannot put into shore to night is bound to dip. Below Evausvillo there aro miles and miles of Hooded country where no steamers couid possibly make Kbore. The timber skirting tba banks of the river is under water. To strike upon it in a calm means death; but in this stage of the writer there can be but one fato for any vessel loose upon tho wateis of the Ohio to-nigl t." A fiat boat which ventured out to take off some people on "Tho Point" was overturned by the gale, and a part, if not a'), of the occupants were drown ed. It is impossible lo learn anything deGuitt- of the condition of the peo ple lo night. Houses in all xubmerged places must be init:bly swept from existence tonight. The loss of lifo apprehended is positively incalculable. A terridc cyclone passed near llock ingham, N. C. on Tuesday, killing fif teen or thirty people. At Franklin, Ky., on Tuesday a tor ouado devasting the town blowing down the houses. The C. &. O. It. It. track is con structed 32 miles north of Itedding nnd there is scarcely a quarter of a mile of it that can be called straight. Work is being energetically pushed forward and it is thought by marry that the road will be extended to Jit. Shasta before tho summer is gone. Trains run as far as the" first bridge on the Sacramento, and timbers to com plete the structure are being hauled from Oakland where they are framed. The company have at Oakland dupli cate bridges framed, so if one should be burned, they can replace it in short order without delaying traffic oyr two or three days. To keep ice "from windows take a sponge or ordinary paint brush, rub over the glass once or twice with a little cold alcohol. Bold Bangs- Bangs on a girl give her an unruly look, like a cow with a board oier her ' fa'ie. You take tie gentlest cow in the world and put a board over her face and turn her out in the pasturn and she gets the reputation of being unruly, and you would swear aha would jump fences and raiso the devil, and you wouldn't give so much for her by 510, only for feed. It is so with a , girl. If she wears her hair high on her forehead, or brushed back, or even has frizzes and has a good look, you will go your bottom dollar on her and feel that she is as good as gold, and lhat when she tells her young man that she loves him, there is no dis count on it, and no gig;ling back. Butjtake the same girl with her frout hair banged, and when she looks at you you feel just as though he wou!U hook, .and you can't trust her. Sho has a fence-jumping look that niakf s a young man fetif as though he wouldn't be safe unless she was tied hand and foot so she couldn't get out of the pas ture. A girl with bangs may try to be good and true, but it's awful hard work. When she looks at herself iu the glass and sees tho quarter of an inch of forehead, she says to herself, "I am dangerousl They want to look out for uiel" Sho thinks she is all right, but she is constantly doing that which a girl who wears her Inir brushed back will not think of doing. The bang girl may belong to a church, and if ay tiy to put on a pious look while the hymn is being read. But she will lojk out from behind those bangs side wise at somo meek and lowly brother who is trying to get his mind on the hymn, and ho will get his mind fixed on her, and it will break him all up, and he won't know whether he is sing ing "A Charge o Keep I Have," or "She's a Daisv." Tho bang girl mar - r. o place her bangs down on tho sack of the pew ahead of her during tha morning prayer, and try to bo good, but hpr corset will be too tight, and as she hitches around to escape the pain, one eye will rise like the morning star orpr the back of the pew, and that eye will eatch the eye of a young man two seats to tho right who is trying to cov er up his face with one hand, while La tries to keep the flics off tho pomade on his hair with the other, and his interest in the prayer is knocked into a cocked hat. A Story at Dolph's Ex pense. A Washington dispatch of Feb. 17th, tells the following story at the ex pense of an Oregon Senator. No doubt it is badly over-drawn, nnd is a Senatorial joke imposed upon Mr. Dolph by some ingenious reporter. Hare it is: Sen. Dolph, of Oregon, has very en larged views concerning the importance of his senatorial position. Last Tues day night, at the President's recep tion, there was such a long line of carriages, and such bad management of them, that some of the guests did not reach "the White House until the hour for the close of the reception. Dolph got inside of the White House grounds at 0:30 r. it. Here he found his carriage blocked so long that ha became desperate. Sticking hip head out of tho window, he bawled to tbe driver of tho carriage in front of him: "Get out of the way, I am Senator Dolph of Oregon l" Tho driver in vitcd the Senator from Oregou to "go to Halifax." The Senator at this got out in the rain and walked up to the occupants of the offending carriage, and complained of the driver's impu dence. The people po'itely told Dolph to mind his own business. They be longed to Senator Palmer's party. They added in polite phraseology that it was a good thing to know enough to go in when 't rains. The Oregon Sen ator thereupon promptly retired. Pal mer, who was in the second carriage in advance of Dolph, employed strategy and finally broke the blockade of car riages. He beckoned to a policeman, and explained to him that the presi dent was waiting for him. This faith ful officer got Palmer's two carriages up ahead of evey one else, while th unfortunate Senator from Oregon never reached the White House at all. Tough meat may be made as tender ' as any by the addition of a little vin egar to the water wjien it is put on to boil. I ,1 - T-
