One was caused by Felting ashen and coals near a fence in the rear of B. F. Dowell's law office, another was the burning of some bed clothes in Mrs. J. Conley's room, cause unknown, and the last uas a chimney afire innhe old Franco American hotel hat looked threatning for a while. No particular damage was done in either case. Notice To Shippers. All who have ver had dealings vvi'h him know that lie cn be relied upon at any and all times. Hall of Justice. The court room in the new huildng was ued for the lirst time last Monday, Judge L. R. Webster having the honor of official ing in it as presiding Judge for the first tim. The room is one of the fin est halls of justice in the State of Oie gon, its dimensions being 41 by 68 feet, the ceiling 26 feet high. The furni ture and heating and acoustic ar rangements Are also in keeping with the hall and building and are a credit io all who had a hand in its construe tion. Grand Jury. Our mining population can be called anything but happy this winter as they are all still waiting for water. R. says lhat the passenger train will not run regularly to Phoenix before the first of March Wm. V. Jones, James Burns, Con Kane and several others from ihic sec tion have returned from the Siskiyou tunnel since -work was suspended there Merchants and saloon men on the Siskiiou mountain aro closing up business and moving to other parts since the work is stopped at the tun nels. A match race for SlOO aside is an noincfd to take place at Phoenix on the 22d. Green Mathews' "Sadie" and Neal Sly's "Fred" are the horses to run. The fixtures of the Red Lion res taurant were purchased this week by Walter Andeison who will continue furnishing lunches at any time of day or night. Superintendent Carl! went south this week on stage business. He says the company will put on a daily line of two horse stages between this place and Phoenix. The Champion of Honor lodge here is in a flourishing condition and gains in membership each meeting. Two of our county officials were made mem bers this week. Two cases of diphtheria were re ported in the family of J. M. Smith tLis week both of which proved fatal, but at present the disease has spread no farther. Every precaution should be taen to prevent this. Railroad construction is still going on south of Phoenix the objective point being the 145th mile stake, just be yond Ashland. The track is now ballasted to Phoenix. John Orth is shipping sugar cured hams from Ion a and K. Kuhli has ordered flour from Douglas county. Tho Jacksonville silver cornet band gave an exhibition of their progress at the ball Thursday night and did exceed ingly well considering that they hav only had their instruments for a couple of weeks. Several inches of snow fell this week and the ground being frozen at the ttm- it las not yet all disappeared although it commenced thawing out yesterday. A heavy fall is reported in the mojntains. We acknowledga recpipt of a fine cake on the occa-ioD of the 48th birth day of our townsman W. J. Plymale. May you live to see many more birth days, Tip, and the same kind of cake will do us e ich lime. George Engle will move to Phoenix next week and Miller it Co. are to succeed him as agents fur W. F it Co. at Grants Pass. Mr. Engle will con tinue as stage and express aeut at the new terminus of Phoenix. A large audience attended the last performance of the Langrishe troupr at their last appearance Saturday night when the drama "Divorce was presented in tin style. We can rec ommend this troupe for patronago to our neighbors. Ashland is to have a bank. II. B. Carter of Iowa is at the head of the movement and the principal men of the place are taking stock in the enter prise., A lot for building purpose his been purchased south of the Ma sonic building. Wp acknowledge a pleasant call this week fiom Gen. M. Willard the genial mannger, and junior member of the firm, of the lurdwarp house cf Miller it Co. of Ashland. He was a witness in the Cameron forgery case, being one of the lesers. Costing down the hill south of town has been extensively indulged in by our young folks this week anil numerous bruised limbs, sore eves, etc. are the result. All hands agree that its lots of fun nevertheless and the sport continues on. An individual known as "Three fin gered Jack, who has been brakinuon the railroad, was brought up from Grant's Pa-s last night and lodged in jiil on a charge of buiglary. He is accused of tweaking into Royals hotel at that place and was caught in the building. The Farn.ers store with A. G. Col ' vin at the helm is doing a good busi ness and will do even more when peo pie find out how low the goods are marked. The highest cash price paid for deer skins, heef hides and furs, and produce of any kind taken in exchange for goods. Miller it Co. of Ashland are build ing a. large wnrehou.se on the depot grounds at that place preparatory to loing a general forwarding business as soon as the railroad reaches there. This will bo a groat convenience to mpi chants and other shippers in the Klamath country, Link villa and Yieka J. I. Knight, whom everyone that has ever been in Jospphine county knows, died at his resilience in Wil dervilln on Sunday. His mind wa deranged for some time past but re covering from that he was finally par alyzed, that being tlm immediate caup of his death. Ho leaves a wife and several children and many friends to mourn his loss. Gillette an old resident of Ashland and hip of the pioneers of Sou-hern Otegon lied of heait disease at Ashland last Thursday evening. He was sitting in High and Taloi's saloon conveising with friends when he dropped over and life was rxtinct. Mr. Gillette was Recorder of the town of Ashland at i he time of his death and has held scv eial other positions of trust there, al ways proving a faithful and efficient official.
