The wisdom of this ago must see that this constant, never ending wear and tear of mind and muscle must and dees make wrecks of women; that it enfeebles the body and dwarfs tli mind; that it prevents women from developing heoUby, stout-limbed, full lunged and broad-chested off-spring; that for a proper mental and physicial development there should bo each day some period of absolute waking, rest, and leisure, for recuperation, for nocial enjoyment, for ibe cultivation of some peciarpursuicpfor gt-tting completely- outside and away from home oarpa, and thereby getting Lack to them stronger and better; that the poor of all degrees are as much entitled to such leisure as the rieh; that physical ex haustion perpetuated in the child is our great source of vice and crime; that Guiteau himself of this may be cited aw a fearful proof, the testimony at the trial showing that his mother was overworked previous to his birth, and thereby lie came into the world malformed as to cranial development a moral monstrosity. There must be a numbf r of screws loose somewhere in the domestic and social machinery, and I think chief among thee are lack of method, lock of forethought, lack of calculation, lack of consideration and appreciation by men of the extent and exhausting character of woman's domestic indoor work. All of which, summed up, amounts to the lack, in many quarters, of the lecoguiliou of the care of the house, care of the family and care of the table as a science. aw Chlaamca Kar;alK far 11 It m. An Australian Chinaman when anxious to have a wife of his own nation, says the North China "Herald," sends a letter to an agent in Hong Koig. Tho following is n condensed translation of one of these tpistles: ''I want p wife. She must bna maid en under twenty years of aye, and must have not left her father's house. 3hc must tyuve never retui -a book, and her eyelashes muft be half an inch in length. Her teeth must he as spark ling as the pearls of Ceylon. Her breuth must be like unto the scents of the magnificent odorous groves of Java, and her attiio must be from the hitkwii weavers of the Ka La Ching, uhich ate 011 the banks of the greatest river in the world the overflowing Yang-tse Kiang." The price of a Chi neso woman delivered in Sydney is 3S, but two Chinese women only coat o2; therefore the heathen Chinese import the women in couples. The importer never ices his women before they arrive, and thn he generally se lects the best looking one. The other is shown around to a number of well-to-do Chinese, and after they have in spected her, she is submitted to wkat may be called public auction. At a recent sale in Sydney a young cirl about ten yeirs of age was oVered, and after some spirited biddifig sho wa purchased by a wealthy Cliii.se store keeper, whoso place of buiiness is in one of the leading towns of New South Wales, for 120. The melan choly uspect of the Celestial girl aa fchtf went away in company with the man who purchased her was deplorable to tho last degree. We haye all the natural resources of a rich country, and by means of labor and economy any one can make a live lihood and, in time, acquire a com petence, sas the Dalles, Or., "Moun taineer." But there is a certain class of men who hold as their gospel hat the world owes them a living, and to orthodox they never consider them selves indebted to society for anything they rective. To such, tho ia:ific Northwest is not a desirable location. It will bo better for them and for us that they do not come to Oregon. "We have room only for workers who ex pect by habits of industry to help themselves, and in so doing aid in de veloping the" country. We have rich, unoccupied land for tho agriculturist, and opportunities for mechanics and artisans. To men of capital, no place nfTers better inducements than the Pacific Northwest. We have the re sources of an empire, and only need development to take the rank that nature hay destined we should occupy. Among our population we number somo of the tturdiest toilers. Thousands of sheep are dying in Montana from a hitherto unknown disease. They swell up and bleed at the nose and die. Examination shows effusion of blood in the intestines and is incurable. A DJSl.Mit CLLUUIUA.V LAST LtTTtE. The annexed letter was written by a young man of most brilliant psrt?, who died a drunkard in 1879, after r tiiing from the rectorship of a church at Elkhart, Indiana. The words worn penned ly him while on "the threshold of death, and they are repaduced here for the benefit of those who love to look upon the delicious netur in its blush: , But now the itrugyle is over. L can survvy the field and measure the losses. The demon tore fiom around uiu the robes of my sacred nfficn and sent me out cburchleas and godless, a very hissing and by word among men. Afterward I had business large and lucrative, uud my voice was heard in many courts pleading for justice, mer cy and right. But the dust soon gathered 011 my ooks, and 110 footfall crossed the threshold of the drunkard's office. I had money ample for all my uecesdilies, but it took wings and went to feed the coffers of tho devils which possessed me. ljiad a home adorned with all that -vcalth and the most ex quisite taste could do. The' devil crossed its threshold and the light f-ded from itskchambcis; the fire went out from the holiest of altars, and, leading me from its portals, despair walked forth with me and sorrow and anguish lingered within. I had child ten, beautiful to me,at,,least, as a dream of the morning, and they had so entwined themselves around their father's heart that, no matter where he might, ever it came back !o them on tlieningHofa fathers undying love. The destroyer took their hands in his, and led them away. 1 had a wifa whose charms of mind and person were such that to eee ber was to re member her, and to know her was to lovo her. For several ear3 we walked the rugged path of life together, re joicing in the sunshine and sorrowing in the shade. Tho infernal monster would not spurn me even this. I had a mother, who for long years had not lefuhercliair, a victim of disea.se, and her choicest 'delight was in reflecting tlmt the lessons taught at her knee had taken root in the heart of her young est born, and that be was useful to his fellows and an honor to her who bore iiim. But tho thunderbolt even reached there, and there it did its most ci'iel woik. Other day cured all but this. Ah, me! Never a word of re proach from her; only a teuder caren; only a shadow of a grent, uuHpoken grief gathered over the dead old face; only a trembling hand laid more lov ingly upon my head; only a closer clinging to the cross; only a piteous appeal to heaven if her cup was at last full. And whilojierboy raged in his wild delirium, two thouiand miles away, the pitying angels pushed" the golden gates ajar, and the mother of the drunkard entered into rest. And thus I stand, a clergyman without a chuich, barrister without brief or business, a husband without a wife, a son without a parent, a man with scarcely a friend, a soul without hope all wwullowed up in the maelstrom of drink I Another Haitian Seer. This time Ihe story comes from Cot tage Grove, that two brothers, Nathan and Isaac Bomewood, were in tho mountains hunting, making an p pointnicut to meet at a certain point. Isaac arrived there first and signaled to his brother, who just then happen, ed to see a. deer and failed to answer. desiring first to Rill the deer, but un fortunately for him Isaac saw the deer also and, not having heard his brother "answer the signal, he knew not that he saw there, as the deer moved slowly through the brush, he got sight of what he supposed were the deer's legs and taking, deliberate aim he fired, shooting Nathan through both legs be low tho knees. Isaac being compelled to go for atsistance was obliged to leave his sorely wounded brother, who in the mean time got very cold and crawled over half a mile, before as sistance reached him. It is indeed dangerous for two or three parties to go out hunting together now in this enlightened age. ' Plaindenler." A lady recently sent a note to tho clerk of a Chicago hotel asking the whereabouts of a certain gentleman. The reply was very guarded, nd would have done credit to a Philadel phia lnwyrr: "Don't kuou; he hut been dead seven vear.s."
