Republican Mate Central ronimltlvr,
A meeting of the Republican State
Central Committee of the State of
Oregcn is hereby called, to be held in
the city of Portland on Thursday,
February 21, 188-1, at 11 o'clock a m
A full attendance is earnestly desired.
January 26, 1884.
Sol. Hirscii, Chairman.
Southern Anicullle.
If the democrats intend to elect the
rixt President of the United States,
they may as well make up their minds
that they have cot to fight to do it.
"Louisville Courier Journal."
You are right, honey; and it will be
onn of those 'fights' in which 'one
mutherner' will not be 'able to whip
five Yankees' either. And don't you
forg' t it, Jjoney." "Knoxville Chron
Ida." The New York -'Sun" has grown
melancholy over the democratic blun
der, and says: "Poor, stricken, hap
less democracy, divided in idea", most
impotent in conduct, what fatalities
beset it, what follies are committed in
thy name."
The Cleveland "Herald" xvnnts to
know why Mr. Samuel S. Cox is so
quiet these days. The Herald is a
quepr creature if it expects any vast
amount of vociferous enthusiasm from
n man who has just been run over by
a gravel train.
Eight women on the grand jury in
Whatcom last week. Result, all the
proprietors'ef saloons, gambling house
and dUreputablo places in town indict
ed. Six women sat on the petit juri
and helped to convict several the de
fendants. "Seattle Star."
It may be true, as Mr. Dana assert?,
that Joe McDonald cannot carry eith
er New York, Conncticut, or New Jer
py, but he is Mr. Watterson's candi
date and he must be nominated, utter
ly rpgardless of all consequences. Tbe
Kentucky policy of to day is the old
time motto of tbe adventuresome for-tuue-Reeker:
"Pike's peak or bust."
The Washington Capital says that
ll-niy Villard is going to devote him
elf to the EdiBon electric light ir.ter--t.
Hiat enterprise is assuming huge,
proportions, especially in Europe,
where Mr. Villard proposes to sppnd
the coming year, ne is already con
cerned in tbe Edison Company, and
will very likely go to the head of it in
time.
The New Albany "Ledger," 'one of
the oldost and ablest Democratic news
papers of Indiana, says of Mr. Payne:
It is unfortunate for the Democracy
that he was champnned by the Stand
ard Oil monopoly, the. most gigantic
corporal ion in the United States. It is
a'bo unfortunate that he was chosen
over George IL Fend'etou, who stood
s the Democratic reprecentative of
Civil Service Reform and of honor and
decency in politics. Tt is a blunder
that may and likely will lose the J Jem
ocrata tho vote of Ohio and possibly
other States in November.'
Says the Chicago "Times": An ir.
telligent young Englishman, of pood
family, a baronet's son, who has been
investing largely in lands in Texas,
was asked how it was that so many of
his countrymen were buying land in
this countrv, just at this time. "I
will tell you," he said. "There is a
very general feeling that there will be
a great change in England soon, equal
to that made in the South by your
civil war. Although they would laugh
at tha idea, if you suggested jt, nine
men out of ten in England believe
tha-. Alber Edward, Prince of Wales,
will be the last king England will ever
Jinwe. A reyclution is silently but
mrely preparing, that will uproot all
the old ferdal systems."
It would be an interesting and not
altogether unprofitable study for some
ono wiih nothing better to do to woik
up statistics concerning the acquire-tnt-nt
of land in this country by
foreigners. We do not mean in
farms, but in principalities. A large
amount of English capital has of late
years been drawn to investment in
vast tracts of western, southern and
rouih western land for specula'.h o and
agricultural purposes. Agents there
are who make a business of effecting
such purchase. Wo have heard re
cenlly of a tract in Florida whose own
er have put up some 200 miles of
barbed wire fence to keep their cattle
-within bounds. Thin is very well, and
way stand as a sure indication of the
way in whch the future of the countrv
is regarded by English capitalists, but
it must, if it continues, rapidly en
croaeh on the lands which are open to
lioniestcsuVrs. A thousand small
farms are much bptter for the oaiion
ha.) "n large ono.

The Democratic rooster dead; he
died in the t.piii)glimr of his useless
ness haTiog served the p-irty fiiithtulh
for the last 20 years, waiting for a
chance to crow.
He btarted out in this world of un
certainty in 1864 by trying the mili
tary dodje but the magnificent stand
ing armv of the United Statps so in
timidated the jouthful fowl that he
bad hardly regained his equanimity in
tinin to see the hopes of his pirty pied
by a changs of tactics in the (amenta
ble sacrifice of the sage of Chapaqua.
Subsequently he appealed at Gramercv
Park and attempted to save the party
b) gobbling up New York but this
miserable folly also proved disastrous
to the bird although it took an 8 by 7
commission to stop his ludicrous crow
ing and convince him that he wa
beaten. Again he started out think
ing that epauletts and the great state
of New York would surely prove tri
umphant but ho was relegated to pri
vate life snd h is been busy the lasi
four years trying to intimidate amb'
tious hens that have developed a ten
dency to want to crow in his adopted
state.
It is believed that he seriously im
paired his health trying "to swallow
the Court house question and although
it was served with sweet and sbur
auce it proved too much for his di
gestion, yet the immediate cause of the
death of this illustrous pirate was his
coming in contact with the bharp point
of a pitchfork in the hands of an irate
livery man while he was endeavoring
to transfer tho contents of an oat bin
nto his capariQus craw. Subspquently
some degenerate sons of America, so
it is said, attempted to defy all of the
provisions of the Burlingame treatv
by offering his carcass for sale in
Chinatownbuthranjestyofthelaw was
sustained and the provisions of our in
ternational treaty upheld by coroprate
aid, and a timely intimation given to
the joungnters that they would be
spared this time in consideration of

While everyone is going wild over
the "prospects" at Cour d'Aleii", let
mo givo vou a few interes ing bits of
history that may serve to modify some
what tho present excitement. In
Jackson ille, in Southern Oregon, af
(era liar I rafn it is no unusual thing to
bo able to pick up gild in the street,
and it is a fact known to every resi
dent, that the crave! bed upon which
the town is situated is unusua'ly rich
As an example, one party, a fow win
ters sincp. by tunneling under his
kousc "cleaned up" the neat sum of
four thousand do'lars. It is otten
said half in earnest half in jest, that
some of the old brick lm dings made
from the clay taken from Rich Gulch,
have more gold f'ised into the bricks
than was ever inside the buildings. It
is a fact, also that there are numerous
'diggins"in Southern Oregon, that are
immensely neb, but the scarcity of
water, the lack of sufficient "dump"
and miny minor caus ma e it im
possible to work the claims to advan
tage. The simple fact of the matter
i, that it would take more money to
develop the claims than they are worth.
A s regards large specimens, it was no
unusual thing to get 500 to $800
nuggets from Jackson creek in an
early day, and it is also a remarkable
fact, that those who found these nug
gets are still hunting for more. They
are not rich those miners, but by long
experience they are able by hard
scratching to make a living. No read
er, I don't get the mining fever very
easy, because I've lived in the mines
and know that "all that glitters is not
gold."
Senator Lamar has recently written
a letter to the Commonwealth Club of
Philadelphia, in which he dufines "re
form," and not "tariff," as a paramount
issue, and it is an open secret that these
southern senators have latelv discoun
tenanced further agitation of the tariff.
"Between the two," said a sothern rep.
resentative the other day, one should
prefer tho 'bloody shirt' to tho tariff as
an issue for the next campaign-" This
expresses in a few words a growin"
preference among democratic states
men. They are .familiar with the
"bloody shirt," but know nothingabout
the tariff, even in their onn states.

The distress
ing feeling of
weariness, of
exhaustion without effort, which makes life
a harden to so many people, is due to the
fact that the blood is poor, and the vitality
consequently feeble. If you arc suffering
