y (.THIOL'S FACTS. The average number of rainy days in Alaska is 245 in a year. Recent statistics show that criminals and lunatics are generally two inches shorter than tho class to which they belong. Highlanders beliere that a wou-d from a stag's horn is incurable, and that a dog pierced by it, eitbir dies from gangrene, becomes paralytic epi leptic or stupid. As an illustration of the progress which the lore of music has made in England, it is remembered that when d particularly savage caricature of the late Prince Consort was desired, he was drawn playing on the piano, but now th&y?uke of Edinburgh is a good violin player, and nobody seems to find it even amusing. It was the ancient Irish belief that human hair should never be burnt, only buried, because at the resurrection the former owner of the hair will come to seek it; and that it ought not to be thrown awayr "lest some bird should find it and carry it off, causing the owner's head to nclie all the time the bird was busy working the hair into its nest. Tho Cinque Ports had many curious customs of their own. The mayor and jurats were justices within the liberty of the borough to the exclusion of all others. The way in which justice was administered was short and sharp? A thief who was taken "back berende" at Folkcnslone or Dover was- thrown over the cliff, and at Sandwich, smoth ered or drowned. Their peculiar mode of dealing with debt was called the right of "Withernam." If a burce&s of another burgh were debtor to a freeman of a Cinque Port, the port issued a writ requiring the debt at the hands of the author' of the debtor's town. Jf, after thit, tho money were not forthcoming, the first fellow towns men of the debtor who came into the Cinque Port that had issued the writ -was looked on as liable for tho debt nnd was in danger of having his goods seized for it. Ciiktopa, Ks., Oct. 25. Great ex citement has been raused by the dis covery of a sealed tin can containing .greenbacks, silver and gold, amounting ito more than 530,000, on the farm formerly occupied by the notorious .lfender family. It is supposed the money is tho proceeds of a few of the many robberies and irurders in which tliey.wer engaged. "J. C. Murphy, the present owner of the farm who found the spoils, proposes to keep it, but his claim will be contested by friends of the victims of the Benders, who assert that they can identify a portion of tho mon.ey. It is further claimed that a legal fight will throw new light on the Bendor horror. Par ties are digging here and there on the farm in the hope of finding moro money, the belief being that a large amount of treasure is collected in this vicinily. Hon. M. C. George, member from Oregon to tho lower house of Congress intends to introduce a bill at this ses sion of our national legislatuie which, if it passes both houses, will phco A'aska under civil government. We agreee with the "Oregoniau" that the present lawless state of affairs in our uiost northerly territory has a tenden cy to paralyze business enterprise and disccurage the investment of capital. Many American citizens are interested in the advancement of Alaska, and in asmuch as the development of that territory will have a beneGcial effect upon p.l! points connected with it, it behooves all good citizens of Puget Sound to encourage and approve the measure. Seattle Star. There will be 325 members in the next House of Representatives, in stead of the 293 of the last House. The Eastern States have the seven! v- five they had in the last house; the Western States have 109, instead of ninety-two; the Southern States have 121, instead of 106. Tho Democrats will have a majority of sixty-four, cr twice the number of now members. The Democrats will have 191 members in all. Tho East sends forty-two, the West fifty-one, and the South 101. A Chicago f i ial traveler says that it in a r " ip" in northern llichican he iutid a notice pinned on the dooe of a store which read: "Gone to bury my wife; will In back in thir ty minutes." A Philadelphia lawyer, too proud to all his friends to suppose that he practices in the divorce courts, adver tises, "Misfit marriages a specialty." ei Out of a population of 1,300,000 in New York City, only 01,052 per sons own rral estate.
