The messago of Gov. Newell to this legislature is at hand. A more interesting executive document ih seldom seen. It formally opens vv ith the not idle boart thai "for manifest reasons wo are about to assume a fore most position in the afTiirs of tho world." Tiiis is truo beyond a doubt. In extent Washington Territory is just "about 1,000,000 aores moro than twice the area of the State of Indiana. It will thr next thing to a miracle, if with all advantages of location, soil, climate anil vigorous blood, Washing ton does not, within the next live yearn, reach a representative poiula lation of 300,000, of a total property valuation of 100,000,000. Such a territory ebouM be admitted into the Union rh a state upon application. The governor's message urges the ad mission, but an application without presenting a constitution, will not and should not be granted. The people of Wa-Jiington' ma-l a constitution sev eral years ago and applied for adinia i ion, but failed bc-itise the popul ition was then too small. They might this winter re present that constitution with largely improved chances of suc cess. Every Pacific, coast member should, and probibly -vould, favor tho movement. It is objected that tlii old constitution is cumbersome. Then let it bo remodeled by congress and adopted by the new .state after admis sion. Blaine and Conlilin;. Washington, October IS. A gentle man in this city, well-known in Penn sylvania, is authority for tho state mnt that ex Senators Blaine and Conhlin; aru about to assume a new attitude towaid each other. Up says that sioco their retirement into private life tho friendi of each have been quietly at work endeavoring to effect a reconciliation between them, believing that under combined and harmonious leadership the party would receive sucli ins; iration that its success in ISS-t would bo placed beyond doubt The gentleman explained tho terms by which this was to he effected. Blaine'H failure to bo nominated in 1S7G and 1880, he said, was felt to be a great popular disappointment and notwith standing his declaration that lie was not now a candidate, there was a strong under current of feeling through the country that he should he made Presi dent, and that if called upon to bo the standard bearer of his party hi would accept and would loud one of tho most enthusiastic campaigns the country has ever seen. 'Conkling,' he said, 'had largely con tributed to Blaine's previous failntes, and when the former resigned his scat in the Senate th"; latter's friends had in turn defeated his re election. Since these two powerful leaders had retired from politics the party had missed their able counsels and lost much of its rallying powers, as witness the Repub lican indifference and disasters in 1SS2 and thus far in 1S83 There was now a growing demand that Conkling and Blaine re enter public life ami that they shou'd do so under conditions that would insure tho party their united instead of their divided coufi sel. The plan, tiie gentleman con tinued, was for B'uinu to become President, and Conkling to bo re stored to his old place m tho Senate. A curious effect of the Usup of pos tal notes is announced from Washing ton. It is found that lottery com panies and other swindling schemers, who have, been, by order of the Post master General, refused the use of the money order and registered letter sy. teni, can with slightly greater rifk get their money in postal notes, fehich, being payable to bearer are. not within reach of the official orders. A largo acre age of all kinds of fruit bearing trees should be planted out to meet tho ad vanced demand for fruits. The open ing of the Northern Pacific railroad will create a healthy demand for "fruit in Idaho and Montana. California has already commenced shipping ap ples to Montana by way of Portland. This season he wi I hold the tort as Oregon has no fruit to fhip, but if otchardsare put up in proper bearing trim for another year, this profitable industry will of necessity be almost wholly monopolized l.y the fruit cult ures of our State. Again we say let every farmer leolc to his orchard this fall, and when trees are worthless and dead, pluck them up and plant young thrifty ones in their place. New orchards should be bet out and old ones enlarged. There is going to be a demand for green and dried fruit at rehuumrate prices, and fruit culturt. is one of the uiMt profit able and staplo industries one can en gage in, bringing in a greater revenue tor muscle exjiended tlt.m any other industry. There is no danger of over doing the business. Dtied truit is a staple articlu of commerce, always in demand at good figures, oasy of ship ment and almost holly secure from loss.
