Harper's "Weekly" says: The Dem ocratic party seeks power simply to seizo the spoils. '-Turn the rascal out, means only give the rascals a chance." Republicans are not despondent over tlio Eastern elections. Democrats take hats on off years and the Repub licans accept them back when the Pres dent is to be elected. Ben Rutler has not yet accepted the Greenback nomination for governor of MasKhchuM'tts, but there is not the slightest possiblity of his declining. An icchouseor two will burn down from spontaneous combustion before Benjamin lets go of thai tiger-cat's tail. New Tacoraa, the "future of great' "Washington territory, already has forty lawyers, the total jopulation being but 3,500. The local paper says each one of the forty came with the idea that he wat, to be the principal man in the territory, and in due time a United States Senator. Ex-Senator McDonald, a prominent Democratic candidate for the Presiden tial nomination, wien asked what he thought of the Ohio election, frankly confessed he did not regard it as an assurance of a Democratic victory in 1884. Local factors entered into it that could not be calculated on next year. The statement is made that Conkling r.nd Blaine have adjusted their differ ence3, Conkling promising to vote New York at the next national con vention, in return for Blaine's support in securing the former's return to tho Senate. The statement is denied by iutimate friends of Conkling, who say thny hate each other. Mr. Vennor, tho Canadian weatBer "guesscr," prognosticates that the com ing winter "will be warm open and wet, with little or no snow during the close of the year. The winter will be an exceptional one, with severo storms on- tiie lakes." Professor Richard Mansill, the Rock Island weather forecaste," says of the coming Decem ber that "ihe temperature will average above the mean of the season. It will " Kb rather a pleasant winter month, with a few sharp storms, producing heavy snows in the far north and a few heavy rains in tho central and south ern states." Jennie June said before tho Senate labor committee: "Work is infinitely more important to a woman than vote. The great trouble with the women of America is that J.hry have not been, and Pre not, brought up to work for pay. A woman is compelled to work at sewing at thirty cents a day be cause she does not know how to sew. If she did, Qood wages as dressmakers and tailors are at a command because there is a good field and very few to fill it, and those few are women who have been educated to work. The washwoman teceives SI. 25 per day, because she knows how to wash. The whole truth is a lack of industrial edu cation in the common school system." It has been alleged that in 1842 the fastest lime nr.nde by a trotting horse was 2:30, in a single instance. Prof. "W. H. Bremen, starting from that point, has prepared a table showing speed that has bppn achieved. During the decade following 1843, the number of horses that had trotted a mile in 2:30, or better, had increased to four teen; in 18G3, there were fifty nine; in 1873, 37G, and by the close of the sea son of 1882, there were 1C48. The ta ble further shows that up to 1882, 495 horses had trotte 1 a mile in 2:25, or better; 275 in 2:23, or better; 156" in 2:21, or bettpr; sixty in 2:18, or better; eighteen in 2:17, or better, and eight in 2:15 or better. It would seem that the limit of equine endurance had been very neaily leached. Mr. Robinson, the Republican can didate for Governor of Massachusetts, has defined his position on the question ef prohibition with commendable clear ness. He says that in hfa opinion the present local option "is all that the people will enforce, is of little effect in any State." The present law in Mass achusetts gives any town the power to adopt a prohibitory law for itself by a majority of its citizens, and experience lias t-liown that, this is as far as a State can wisely go in the matter. Sweep ing prohibitory enactments which iub lie sentiment does sustain have been designated as "legislation by hurricane' by so uncomprisingateeiotalleras John Bright, and the class of tempeiance ad vocates who still insist upon them or nc'hing grows smaller every year. Then nre ansurances .that they are fewer than ever in Massachusetts this year, and that consequently General Butler's assistance from that quarter wjil be perceptibly diminished.. CUltUl.Kl'U.NUf.C Woodville Or., Oct 9, 1883. Our old friend, Mr. John P. Bla lock of Evans creek, who has ben suffering very much for the last three or four years with dropsy of the lower liinb, and fearing lately that erysipe las was abouk- retting in, his legs being very much swollen and inflamed, and the skin breaking in places, was led to try bathing tho affected parts with a solution of blue vitriol, and wai very agreeably surprised to find that it not only suppressed all symptoms of the erysipelaR, but that it has also almost entirely cured the drowsy, his limbs having returned to their normal con dition, und It's general health bring eiy much improved. He feels very much elated over his evident cure, and wants everybody, espeiially the afflict ed, to know of a remedy so simpTa and effectual. Will not some of our medical gentlemen favor us with an explanation. Mr. James T. Robinson, brother of John W. Robinson of Evans creekr .has returned to this section after an absence of several years in the east, looking very much the same as ever. Jim has wandered far and wide dur ing his absence, and is full of inter esting reminiscences of his travels and adventurers abroad. He expects, he says, to make Jackson county his home for the future, not having found in all his wanderirgs any place that took his heart so much as this Southern Ore gon. The dress of one of Mr. Geo. Mag erle's children caught fire the other morning, and before the almost fran tic mother could subdue the flames the child was badly burned. Mrs. Mag erle had her own hands severely burned in her efforts to save the child. The pile driver is at work on the foundation for Evans creek bridge. Jarrett's force is at Rock Point. E. W. H. Correspondents of our northern ex changes furnish the following: The end of the track at the O. & C. R. R, front has reached a point 95 miles south of Roseburg, and four miles the other side of Grant's Pass. Several high trestles are under construction be tween the end of the track and Grant's Pass, and the road will likely be opened to the latter point by the middle of next month. Between Grant's Pass and Rock Point, 17 miles beyond, a large force is engaged, and, except one deep cut at Bloody run, this portion of the grade will be finished within two weeks. There is also a large force this side of Roguo river, and this week ad vance graders will be well up toward Ashland. Prospects are fair of having the line opened for traffic to Abhland bj the middle of February. The weather throughout the season has been favorable, and fall rains thus far have not interfered with operations. Progress on the main Siskiyou tunnel has been satisfactory, work being pushed from both ends. This week's report shows a perforation of 203 feet at the north end and 84 feet at the south end, with a heading of 115 feet beyond. Tho rock is rapidly improving and it is believed, thai timbering will be no longer necessary. Work on the California end of the railroad is not progressing very rapid ly, but the Yreka "Journal" thinks it will be more substantial than the Ore gon road. The masonry, bridge, tun nel and trestle work will be continued right along during tho winter, so that the grading can be rushed ahead rap idly during next summer, by putting on a large force of men, who can work to advantage on the entire route. Besides selling the R. R. right-of-way at the Oregon boundary, for the sum of one dollar, Rufus Cole has al so sold over 37 aires to the C. P. R. It. Co., at nearly 510 an acre, which indicates the building of a round house, shops and other works, at that point, which has evidently been decided upon as the place of junction with the Oregon branch.
