r.NDEK TI1E SEA. VOXDEBS IXJ STOUE FOR VISITOBS TO NICE. The International Exhibition at 2sii is reserving some wonders for the furi'igm-rii who may propose to pass a portion of 1883-4 upon tho bonlers of the Mediterranean. Ono of tho won ders is a baloon.which its inventor, jtf. Toselli, calls tho "observatory under the sea." It is made of steel and bronzp, to enable it to resist the jiressure which the water produces at -a depth of 120 meters. This "obser vatory under the sea" has a height of eight meters, and is divided into three compartments. The upper apartment is reserved for the commander to en able him to direct and watch the work ings of the observatory and to give the explanation necessary as to the depth of tho descent and what they will see in the depths of the sea. The second apartment, in the center of the machine, is comfortably furnished for passengers to the number of eight, who arc placed so that thiv can Bee a very long distance trom tho machine. They have under their feet a glass, which enables them to examine at their caso tho bottom of the sea, with its fishes, its plants and its rocki. The obscurity 4 being almost complete at several meters of depth, the obser vatory will be provided with a power ful electric sun, which sheds light to a great distance in lighting these depths. The passengers have at their disposal a telephone, which allows them to converse with their friends who have stopped on the steamer which trans ports tho voyagers to Buch places as are known as the most curious in the neighborhood. They have also a liandv telegraph machine. Beneath tho passengers is an apartment re served for the machine, which is con structed on natural principals, that is to say, as the vessel of a fish, becominc heavier or lighter at command, so as to enable the machine to sink or rise at tho wish of theoperator. A Tnllicr Hultbnrtl. The other day when old Major Sol jman announced his readiness to pro-r-ceed in the direction of the church, his wife appeared wearing a Mother Hubbard" dress. The old man intently regarded her for a few moments, and asked: "Mary, what sort of a coat do you -call that?" "Air you a goin, church." "Why, certainly, Mother Hubbard is to wear it to Jeems. Tho all the fashion now." "Wal I'm glad to know it," the old man replied: "Just wait until I get ready and we'll go." The eld man went out in the kitch en, took a couple of meal sacks, cut tho bottoms out, sewed the tops to gether, and put them on in imitation of pantaloons. When he returned his wife uttered a loud cry of astonish ment, and exclaimed. "Great goodness, JeemB, what's thatJ" ""Father Hublard," the old man re plied. "You're not a goin' to wear them sacks are ycul" "I've got to be fashionable to keep up with you. I've got as good a right to wear these meal bags as you have to go in that bran sack." "I'll tako it off." "All right; off goes Father Hub bard," and turning away he added to himself: "Only one way to beat a woman, and that is by ngreein' with her. Ef it hadn't a bin for the daddy Hubbard I'd been in a mighty bad fix. "Arkansaw Traveler." A Snake -with Feet. Mr. Richard Decker, a resident of "Wallkill valley, in TJlstPr county, -urhilo working in his oatfield recently, was surprised by a blacksnake which came at him with open mouth, his head elevated from the ground 12 or 14 inches. He succeeded in killing it with his pitchfork, and in mearurment found it to be 5 feet 7 inches in length, vith a diameter of an inch and a half at tho largest part. The extraordinary feature of the creature, however, was the presence of two well formed legs with feet attached to the body at a point about 15 inches from its tail. The legs were of a light pink or flesh color without bone, and so elastic that when drawn to their full length and suddenly released they -would spring back to their normal position at the reptile's side. The feet were about the size of a hazel nut and were hoof like in appearance, and of a darker color than the limbs to which they were attached. Upon each one of these feet or hoofs were G3 small claws, white and of a horny substance. Tho body of tho snake, with thelegs attached, was seen by most of the in habitants of the village before it was put into alcohol and forwarded to the National Museum at Washington. -"New York Times."
