In a recent speech at Des Moines, Iowa Governor St. John told the fol lowing thrilling incident: "In one of thn Western towns two or three years ago resided a widow who had a son sixteen and a daughter eighteen years of age. There had never been a dramshop in the place until some three ypars before; the men petitioned the county organization to grant a license to open a dramshop. The women are never guilty of such outrages. One was opened, and the boy, who had been an exemplary boy from childhood up, a regular attend ant at the Sabbath school, soon was led astray went there to play cards. L9t me tell you, I never knew a boy in my life who was ruined by letting -cards alone, but many a boy has been destroyed through the influence of -cards. You older ones here to-night, to you let me say, that it will do you no harm if you never play another card. If you do not, you will not set an example that may sometimes lead astray younger ones that look to you as patterns. This boy went into card playing and beer-drinking, and from that to drunkenness, and in less than fifteen months, in a drunken spree, killed a comrade. He was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to be hanged. The day of execution came on, and it found his sister at the State capital before the Governor asking executive interference in her brother's behalf. The mother was in the prison coll, watching, praying, and comfort ing her boy as only a mother can. The hour of execution cam a on, and lie was literally torn from his mother's arms as bhe fell fainting to the floor. Ho was taken to the gallows; jthe black cap was adjusted, the trap was sprung; ihe rope broke, and he fell almost Hifeless to the cround. As they raised him and the blood gushed from his nose and ears, he, thinking of hiB mother last, said in a husky tone: ''0 x motherl for God's sake have them ihurry; won't you pleasel" He ascend ed the scaffold; the rope was adjusted, -the trap was sprung, and his spirit was sent to the God who gave it. Men, for Gods sake I ask you to 'hurry hurry;' do not open more of the places of iniquity, but 'hurry' to blot them out, and drive them from your land. J3B rjravci atriKo lor your firesides and your homes. Strike for a higher and better civilization. From all the saloons of this city there never iiowed a blessing, not one. Curses, .and only curses, have come from them. . How long will you thus continue to give them the sanction of the law." Fruit Kyrapa. A new industry in the United .-States is the production of fruit syr ups." Its success has brought these ..syrups into competition with French Manufactures, which have heretofore liad the markets of the world. As thsy are better, they are preferred in the United States, and in the West Indies and South America. The strawberry, rasberry, and other fruits of this country are not only indigen ous to the soil, and therefore can be produced cheaper, but they possess a far richer flavor and more juice, giv ing them an advantage over the fruits which have to be cultivated by ex tra ordinary efforts in countries to which they do not naturally belong, The trade in syrups in this hemisphere has hitherto amounted to millions of dol lars, which amount has not only gone out of this country to foreign nations, but has also been taken from the trade of the United States with those coun tries which by there near proximity would be supposed to have preferred commercial relations with North America rather than any other part of the world. The success of the cxperi-, ment bids fair to bring to the United States a large trode, besides driving out of our markets another of those foreign products, the control of which has hitherto been held abroad. Cholera Treatment. As tlio newspapers have contributed so many alleged remedies for this dread disease which once again is threating an invasion of the country, we shall give one tased on personal experience in Cuba in 1SG9. It is simply chloroform administer ed internally; tablespoonful, intermixed with six or eight times that quantity of water. We know of fully one hund red men who were so cured, and ad ministered the remedy ourselves in some cases. "We saw one man rescued from the collapsed condition and the remedy succeeded in curing in all cas es that we saw it tried upou. Pre viously, in the same community, no one stricken with the disease had sur vived an attack, and chloroform seemed to cure infallibly. "American Hty , ister."
