The following thrilling story is re lated in a letter dated October 3, 1848: About sundown last evening, a man was carried over the falls. Who lie was is not known. His dress and ap pearance indicated respectability, and after he got into the rapids his Balf possessionu.wai. . extraordinary, ..His boat was a very good one, decked over on the bow, and, 1 should think, would carry three or fcur tons. No other than a person unacquainted with the current above tho rapids would enture po near them. I was on the head ef Goat Island when I first discovered tho boat, then near half mile below the foot of Navy Is land, and uearly two miles above the falls. There seemed to bo two in the boat. It was directed toward the American shore the wind blowing from the shore and the sail was still standing. Being well acquainted with the river, I regarded the position of the boat as extraordinary and hazardous, and watched' it with intense anxiety. Soon I discovered the motion of an oar, and from the changing directions of the boat concluded it had but one. While constantly approaching nearer and nearer tho rapids, 1 could discov er it was gaining the American chore, and by the time it had got near the first fall in tho rapids, about half a mile above Goat Island, it was di rectly above the island. There it was turned up tho river, and for some time the wind kept it nearly uUtionary. The only hope seemed to be to come directly to Goat Island, and whether I should run a mile to give au alarm or remain to as sist in case the boat attempted to tuuke the island, was a question of paiutul doubt. But soon the bout wus again turT.v.l-10---- tiiJiuisricai bhore. Then it was certain that it must go down the American rupid. 1 run for the bridge, rallied u man at the tollgate, and ue run to the main bridge in tune lo bee the boat just be tore it got to the first large fulls in the rapids. Then 1 suw but one muu he wus standing at the stern with Ills oar, changing ilia course of the bo.it duwu (be current, and us 11 plunged over he sat down. I wus astonished to bee the boat rue, with the must and ball standing, and the muu ugdin erect, dltecllug the boat toward the shore. Aa he came to the uext and each succeeding lull he sat down, and then would rue anu ttppl) his our in the intermediate cur ie 111. bull there was hope that he would come near enough to the pier to jump, but in a moment it wus gone. Another, that he might jump upon the rock near tho bridge;, but the cur rent dashed him from under the bridge, breaking the mast. Again he rose on-the opposite side. Taking his our, and pointing his boat toward the main shore, he cried: "Had I butler jump from the boat!" Ye could not answer, for either teemed certain de struction. Within a few rods of the falls the boat struck a rock, turning it over and lodged. He appeared to cruwl from under it, and swam with the our in his huud, till he went over the precipice. Without the power to render assistance for half an hour watching a strong muu struggling with every nerve for lite, yet doomed with almost the certainty of destiny to an immediate and awful death, still hop ing with every ellbrt for his deliver ance caused au intensity of excite ment I pray God never again to ex perience. Candid Advice. "I can swim the whirlpool at Nia gara," said a stranger in a coufiden- tiul whisper to a hardware man on Woodward avenue yesterday. "Can youl" "I fee I that I can. I phould desire some advice from you. VTould you try ft if you were uiel" "No, sir no, sir, I wouldn't think of such a thing. A man who hasen't been in a bath tub for a year, nor had on a clean shirt for a mouth, wouldn't stand a ghost of a show with a whirl pool. You'd better go .and tackle a drink of water and gradually work up to it." "Detroit Free Press." X MODKL IKIlSEWll'K. A correspondent of the Chicago Times" writes: A word about thif French Canadian .housewife, thougl she deserves chapters. I have driftei of late into some of the most desolatr and pover'y-stricken collections oi huts which the mind could conceive which, indeed, it is next to impossible for an American to conceiveat all hamlets where the men, with gaunt, burnt faces, long matted hair, forms taisted in middlo-flge au with us at eighty, by reason of privation, expos ure and unsettled hopelessness, and the clothes altogether indescribable in their meanness, appear to the vision like specters from some raft of a "Me dusa." But even here I saw no wo man, young or1 Old, who"was not neai in her personal appearances, painfully clean in the cart- of her home, and ap parently in the habit of doing three fourths of all the work that was done. The amount of labor that this poor but contented .creature performs is nothing less than marvelous. Prom ising that before the age of 35 she ' Is usually the mother of from six to twelve children most French Cana dian girls are married before they are 18 let us consider' her work for a moment. She has, fir-it of all, the care of her children, which is not a slight thing, even though they are the most careful and self reliant of all the world's urchins; then sha does all her cooking, making her bread out in the sun in a stone oven built near tho house; she does all the washing and mending of clothes; sho does all of her own sewing and knitting, and, in some parts, spinning; she keeps all the mon ey of the household, and makes all the purchases; sho scrubs the front steps' and all tho floors of the living rooms in h r home erery day, and she white washes tho outside of her house once1 a' fortnight or two, if they havo a cow sho milks and cares for it; and then (we have dalt thus fur only with the inci dental qccuiations. by which sparo moments are filled uji). sho works all day in tho field with tho spade, hoe of rake. If she is near salt water, she also salts down barrels of tomcods and flounders for the family's winter use. If she lives near a town she also goes in with the horse and charetto to tho market, and knits whilx she is not wiling produce, on two days of the wrek. The race dr-es not anywhero ulibrd a more superb spectacle of in dustry than this woman presents. And with all she manages to keep,, it not a fresh, at least a bright and Cher ry look upon her face; she dresyps her aelf for church well and tastefully, and carries her good clothes as if she was accustomed to nothing else; and her children, particularly the girls, aro models of cleanliness end good order. This, bear in mind, is as true of the poorest and most isolated hamlets as it is of tho well-to do suburban villages. Ite-apprnriiiirr of the treat Comet oflHKv;. It appears quito possible, sayi ".Nature," that as tho moon draws awny from- the morning sky toward the end of the present month, this comet may be again observed with our larger instruments. Its distance from the earth has been increasing from soon after perihelion passage in Sep tember last, and a maximum takes place at tho beginning of this month, when the distance is 5,988; the earth. then for a tlo overtakes the come tho distance diminishes to .rr,703 on December 1st. The intt-nsit-- light, however' is greatest at the en Jr. Hust, and the comet then rises .i sufficient interval before the sua to j render observation feasible. It will at least be of much interest to ascertain if the comet can be reached with our most powerful telescopes. The only comet which has been hitherto ob served under similar conditions is the celebrated one of 1811, which, it may be. remembered, was observed by Wicniewsky at Neu-Tscherkasb inK August, 1812. A tramp applied for food at a- houso in the suburbs recently, and was asked, whero he enmo from and.wjiero he -was going. "Well, inun," he replied, "h. came from Providence this morning', and am rapidly going' to Heaven by the air line."
