ABOUT HATTLKSXAUES. Mr. Cill, of Barnum's museum, re cently discussed to a reporter upon the subject of rattlesnake, as follows: When a rattlesnake first comes into a tliow his fangs are pulled out, and most all of them think that after that there can bo no danger in handling him. That is a mistake. The fang? will grov again unless they are. cut out by the roots, and I have known of cases where a rattlesnake bit and poisoned his handler less than three weeks after the fangs had been pulled. The rattlesnakes fangs bend inward, and aro sharper than a fine needle at the end. When the bhowmen want to destroy them, they raise the raje of the snake by flaunting a silk handker chief in front of him. In his reasoning rage he siezes the handker chief, and a clever ierk pulls out his fanus. Jack Draner. who was with Gardiner's circus ten or twelve years ago, jjot badly bitten by a snake whose fangs had been recently pulled out. He took nine -full glasses of whisky at once and went to sleep, and as soon as he woke up he drank six more. Ha says the whiskv did not intoxicate him, and that he had a dull numbness of tho arms and a general feeling pa ralysis and drowsiness that frightened him. Thanks to tho whinky he re covered in two or three days. The rattles of a snako are not a sure indication of its age, as the naturalists tell us. They say he getss rattle every year. Now, I have had fnakes that grew three rattles in a jear, and somo that did not have one in less than a year and a half. Florida rattlesnakes often get two in a year. I think they make more rattles when they are well fed and in a warm place. Rattlesnakes in captivity are not voracious as other snakes. Fif teen mice will fetd a good sized snake for a month, but if you tempt him he will eat double that number. In his natural state he lives on his fat in the winter, and in captivity a snake has "been known to live more than a year without food. Fangless snakes can not kill their game, and I have put them in a cage with a snake with fangs and have seen them strike their game for them. If I had killed the mouse or rat nothing would have prevailed upon tho Enake to eat it. Did you ever know that rattlesnakes .commit suicide? Well, they do. When wo catch them we use a crotched Btick and aim to fit the crotch iust behind the head. Sometimes wo get it too far back, and that gives the snake a vchance to bite himself. When he sees that he has no chance to escape he hites iimself and is dead within half an hour. If he gets bitten by another . snake he glides off at full speed to a marsh, where he will find a certain weed a sure antidote. The toad inows of this remedy also, and often uses it after being bitten. We aro apt to despisB these lowly reptiles, but they have good luck and often fool the rattlesnakes. Are rattlesnakes good to call Well, thoir flesh tastes like sucking pig and is perfectly transparent. 1 never made a practice of ealinc it, but I have tasted it fried and have no hesl tation in saying it was delicious. Deep Ska Explorations. It is only a comparatively short time ago that life was supposed to be impossi ble in the depths of the sea, and that the waters were condemned to obscuri ty, solitudo and immobility. The pressure of the water, tho absence of light, tho slcwne&s of the renewal of the water, the want of algae or other vegetable materials, and tho experi ments of Prof. Edward Forbes upon the diminution of animal life with in creasing depth in the Egcan sea, were supposed to provo that life cannot ex ist at a greater depth than 492 yards. "When Captains Ross and Wallich found some animals upon their sound ing lines, which had descended to a depth of more than five-eights of a niilt, it was thoutht that they had either been entangled near the sur face, or that they had fallen to the tottom after their death. In 18GG the cable between Sardinia and Al giers was broken, and numerous ani mals were found upon tho gutta-per cha insulatinc surface. M. A. Milne Edwards was consulted upon the sub ject, and ho found conclusive evidence that they had been born and; devel oped jat a depth of moro than 1.243 miles. These discoveries awakened great interest, and led to the prepar ation ot the steam cutter Trarailleur in 1880, for a scientific exploration of the sea depths. The cutter has been employed in each of the three past sum mers iu the Gulf of Glascony, on the shores of tho Iberian peninsula, Cor sica, Algiers" and Morocco, in the Strait of Gibraltar and at the Canary islands, yielding an immense number of animals which were previously un kno-vn, many of which were drawn if ova depths of more than 3.1 miles.
