Tbe Spike Driven.
Gold Spike (M. T), September 8th.
The ceremony of driving the golden
spike, which completed the Northern
Pacific railroad, and permanently
joined the Northern Pacific coast with
the Atlantic, has just beerr completed
at half past - 3 o'c ock. There are
large crowds, and booming- of cannon
and displays of ora'ory. The speakers
were President Villard, Hon. Win. M.
Evarts, Secretary Teller, ex President
Fiedenck Billing, General Grant and
the Governors of Wisconsin, Jlinii-e-ot.i,
Dahota, Montana, Oregon and
Washington Territory.
The last spike was driven home by
H. 0. Davis Assistant GVneral Pas
sender Agent of ihe road, who diove
the first spike on the opening of the
rostl, and this spike was the same one
driven by him then. The t ml 'iis
reached as the sun was setting behind
the in- untiiius. The euthuiasui of
he people variously estim ited from
3,000 to 5,000, was lnillscribable. The
heights reverberated with ihe mingled
omul of cannon ami shouts of men.
Thus was brought to a happy con
clusion n very remarkable event in
American hisinrv.
