'':MB'aft '-fT OREGON SENTINEL. jac:csu.vii,i,ic Saturday. September 1, 1883. MIITUKIIL OTU. Tlie gullibility ol mankind-is shown 'y tho eagerness to hear Beecher tell woplts something be don't know and in't prove about human origin and .hicli, if proved, might make them greatly nhanied of their ancestry. Henry Ward Beecher claim-; to he a superior exponent of the- Christian faith but his method has money in it. Just imagine the Savior in tho hands pf a thru! rical manager and chnrging a dollar a head to the multitudes that listened to" 4iis pure and spiritual mornlitj ! The demoincy have a singular way cf swelling the ranks ot a "reform" party. Their papers yell, "turn the rascals out" and as fast as republicans turn them out, democracy takes them in. A party bo ready to adopt repub licans discarded for rascality can hardly be expected to accomplish any lasting reforms. Tho San Jose "Mercury," alluding to the division of the democratic party on the railroad question, says: "The democratic leaders ar in as had a fix as the j ickass standing between two bundKs of hay starved to death be cause lm could not make up his mind which bundle of hay to eat from first.'' We know Borne newspaper men who would teach that jackass anew trick by swallowing both bundles at once and braying for more. Judge Stevens T7. S. District Judge of Wyoming Territory, has decided that it is unlawful to fence Govern ment lands for grazing purposss and thus sustains the policy ot commiss ioner McFarland. The interests involved are enormous and the commissioner says the object of fencing is not so much to keep the fenced cat tle in as to keep other people's cattle out and that if a legitimate settler (inters on lands thus illegally held it is at his peril. Judge Nelson of Boston decides that a Chinaman born in Hong Kong is not a Chinese but an Englishman. By the Fame rule had Judge Nelson been born in Pekin he wjjuld have been a Chinaman and it is a pity he had not been born there. Under Ills decision all the Hong Kong .coolies may emigrate to the TJ. S. without restriction. The decision won't stand as tho Act of Congress prohibits the importation of Chinese laborers from any country whatever. Tho Like county "Examiner" gives a full account of tho murder of A. G. TJllcv by John and Clark Franklin, at Davi-, creek, in Goose Lake Valley. The "Examiner" Fays it was a cold blooded affair and denounces the Dis trict Attorney and Justice in Modoc county for letting the murderers escape. Flax is indigenous to that region and will make splendid rope if well twisted and it is time some of it was grown and twisted. The "last Bpike" ceremonies to day on the Northern Pacific railroad will signify population and prosperity to the Northwest; that is an empire in it self, if peopled in proportion to its ca pacity to sustain population. It will enable the people of Oregon and the northern territory along the line to throw off the collar of the Central Pa cific and in good time the effect of healthy competition will be felt in California. Even here wo will soon feel the beneficial effect of this road and we believe the driving of the gol den spike that unites the two ends of the great northern thoroughfare will be the dawning of a golden era to us all. QtxsTiox of roucr. There is evidently a reaction taking place on the railroad question and some of thoso who were angry with tin Sentinel- because it spoke plainly are confessing that we have nothing to gain by hostility to the railroad until the company has given us cause. Everybody admits that had the com pany refused to build a milo of road until the right-of-way Iiad been secur ed it would have been given cheerfully and farmers have often declared that they would give a third of their land to insure the building of a road through this valley. The company asked no subsidies but with a stupend ous work before them, that will cost niuo million dollars, they had a right to expect fair treatment and when jurors boast that they have "cinched" the railroad it may be doubted if the treatment has been fair. There must be reciprocity between transportation lines and .producers and sober second thought is convincing our people that they have everything to lose and noth ing to gain by the "cinching" process as in turn they may have to submit tb it themselves and will have no right to complain. Farmers have been ex pecting to ship wheat from this valley at a profit but if the railroad company does not give tnem special rates as it does those of Douglas county they will never load a car with wheat as the com pany is not dependent on us for sup port and don't care a Gg whether we ship a bushel or not., It is for our people to decide whether they will en joy the advantages of the new means of transportation by a fair understand ing or throw them away by fighting the railroad company before they reach !h valip, 'J"t' ii (tra'inns now nre ' t v ' ' rn , . ' -i'iT. and f prui. i v l -i uuvippoiiiled ut tin- in Bvitablo result of their own short sighted ness. Torn the Unseals Out. The following from the "Videtto" will bo of interest to our Democratic readers: "The payment of eighteen millions of the public debt during the 'month of June, and nearly one hun dred acd forty-eight millions within the year, shows How easy it is for the nation to handle n obligation of such prodigious magnitude. It demon slratrnle? what a wonderful nation this Rspublis is, and what a great people the American-people ore. It likewise demonstrates the energy and greatness of the Republican part)', which in the twanty-two years. since it came into power, has taken the Gov ernment with many of its forts, arma ments and troops in the hands of reb els and one-third of its territory under their control, and defeated such a vast rebellion, restored a dissevered union, manumitted four million of slaves, and finally brought the whole nation hack to a condition of peace and pros perity, sound in territory, in its fi ." I nances, its credit, and in the fu'l glory Oi Him proudest and niotu owerful 're pullic that ever existed. It is now in order to inquire what the Democratic party has ever done that the people should be thinking of restoring it to the administration of a Government which it once so nearly succeeded in destroying." Ens? Tlmes- The farmers of this county are gen erally able to hold their crop this year in anticipation of higher prices and it is an indication of prosperity among thorn. Holding, for prospective high prices, however, is sometimes delusive and, while we are waiting, outside parties come in and take the market. This will be the case with the hay crop this year and there is a good prospect that a largo supply will be brought from the TJmpqua for the railroad teams, because ourpeople thought they had struck a bonanza and asked exor bitant rates. This may be the same with grain as it must be upparant that if held too high the market will he regulated by a supply from Douglas county. It would he a singular sight to see flour shipped into Rogue rner valley but ltisnotntall improbable that it will be done. We are glad that farmers are no longer at the mercy cf millers and are able to hold their wheat as it is a suro sign of prosperity but the idea that the railroad is to give extraordinary value to it may be a serious mistake as it will bring us in competition with other producers and instead ot raising prices its effect may be to lower them. Patronize Xovx omvTown. It does lcok strange that people have to be continually urged to pro tect their own interests by patronizing home industry and helping to build up their own town. Money invested at home profits everybody, but people forget that every dollar sent abroad for any article that can be produced at home is juit so much taken from the general wealth. The "practice of tend ing abroad for merchandise is calcu lated to break down and cripple our own merchants and force them, by re ducing their sales, to increaso their profits by higher prices and the people who send abroad for their goods get bilked as often as they get suited and people do not reflect that for everv cent saved they lose two in some other direction. No place can proper where there is not an unanimous disposition to protect its interests by fostering every kind of local industry and assiit ing to build it up in every possible way. When peoplo forget this prin ciple and pull like dogs at a bone, each for himself, all that will be left will be the right to snap and snarl when the biggest dog has got away with it. Not Envjr bat Contempt. The editor of the "Times" is mis taken if he thinks wo envy him his surcess. A person, embodying the qualities of Judas Iscariot and An anias, always ready to betray or to lie in order to fill his purse, is unworthy of contempt and not an object of envy. Those who struggle honorably for success are to bo admired but when it is achieved by greed Bnd double deal ing; by the suppression of truth, the abandonment of friends nnd the sac rifice of every manly principle to sel fish rapacitj: God knows we do not envy him who achieves it. We will modify our opinion however, as we be lieve the editor of the "Times" would betray his best friend for a five cent nickel if a short bit were not in sight. Heretofore wo set too high a price on him. UHTercnre In Jmlstnrnt. Last week a land holder in this county justified as surety on a bond stating under oath that the cash value of his land was ?3,000. On being questioned he said the assessor had just valued it at SG50.00. This only shows that people differ awfully in judgment as to the value of property and as the individual referred to professes to be very conscientious he ought to have cor rected the assessor but no doubt forgot it. There is on old hymn, beginning "Sal cation, oh, the joyful sound," and when it is sung with a good chorus has an inspiriting effect. Mayor Vroom of Treuton, New Jersey, does not fancy the sentiment, for he has forbidden music and singing in the parades there of the Salvation Army. Tt i n slight consolation to know that New Jersey is ouUide the United States and its Mayor, consequently a tore: PLAUSIBLE DTT tXIEtt Sheriff Jacobs in a published excuse for contempt of Judge Hanna's in- junctionorderputshimself in a worse po sition than ever and lie stands sell con victed of conUrapt. It is tn:e tliAi.lh. Clerk did iss-ue a writ of restitution, in obedience to a mandamus from tlitSu preme court, he not having been en joined but prior to its wrv.ij:a-thj.tvuerif had been serve a wuu an injunction ooi of Judge Henna' court restraining him from interfering with tie prop erty and h acknowledges that the writ of injunction was in his hands first. It is presumable that the sheriff was not aware that an injunction in an original suit could not be diiregarded by any oth erauthority and, in charity, he might be excused on the ground of ignorance but, unfortunately for this view, he gave his word of honor as a man thsi he would obey the restraining order and then disobeyed it. How aliout the- second order of Judge Hanna commanding the sheriff to undo his unlawful act and make restitution of the property he agreed not to interfere with? CanVhe ofiVr any excuse fort con tempt in not obeying ill None what ever. There was no order of the Su preme court restraining him from making restitution; and the fiimsv plea that he would, have done it but for the Judge's order of imprisonment, in default, proves him inexcusable and convicts him of double contempt. When a sheriff acknowledges his duty but refuses to do it because a Judge imposes a penalty for not doing it lie weighs his official oath against his per sonal feelings and the bad advice of scheming shysters who are uink'ns tool of him. There is ac'ean cut issue between the Judgt and sheriff and the latter cannot sustain his position in this judicial district where Judge Ilanna is known. Notice, N. P. R. K. WESTERN Dv?S. 0. R. & N.
