It is quite an art to feed pigs so that
the best advantage may be obtained in
forming flesh.
One thousand cars of cattle have
been shipped from Billings since the
railroad reached that point.
There is possibly no more repulsive
sight than a filtlij con-stable, and one
in which dairy cattle are 'housed is es
pecially offensive.
"Walnut tree limbs, full of nuts in
excellent condition, have been brought
up by the dredgers from the bottom of
Stonington (Conn.) harbor. It was
thought the trees were blown into the
harbor during the great September
ale of 1814.
It is learned that 35,000,000 bush
els of corn are converted into whisky
every year. This statement goes
against the grain of everyone who
thinks the pigs of this country don't
get enough. The whisky pig gets the
most, probably because it is still.
'Pittsburg Telegraph." '
A paihtive crygoes up in the eat
that "jest nigh onter Thanksgivin' time
cranberries went up 100 per cent., an'
'twan't a bad j'ear for pickin' cranber
ries, neither." They should console
themselves w'ith the reflection that it
"would hev been much wuss hed they
gone a hundred pegs higher."
"You advertise that there is a Cne
stream of water on the farm. I don't
see-it," remarked a strangei-vrho want
ed to rent the place. The landlord
said: "Just work that pumphandle a
a little and you'll see a fine-stream of
water. You don't expect to have the
Niagara Falls on the place for 15 a
month, do you?" "Texas Sittings."
H." D. Morgan, of Snohomish, was
np last week and purchased of Mr. N.
D. Symonds, of Lincoln week, 1 10 head
of stock sheep, paying for them 53 50
per head. They were a vory fine band,
mostly young ewes, in which Mr. Mor
gan has got a bargain. They went
down on the Messenger on Monday
morning. "Olympia Transcript.
A draft from the Hereford and
Polled Angus herds of MI II. Cochran,
of Hillhurst Farm, Quebec, Canada,
were sold at auction nt Dexter Park,
and 31 Herofords and 38 Angus were
disposed of for a total of $32,900.
The Herefords average 375, and the
AngUB female CC4. males 407. The
polled cattle were just out of quaran
tine after importation.
"We arc- informed that a party of
gentlemen from New Jersey have pur
chased about 1500 acres of land about
four miles from Ilwaco, with the in
tention of raising cranberries thereon.
The soil and climate are peculiarly-well
fitted fir tlio culture of such fruit.
There is a vast tract of land in the
western part of this county, notably on
Clatsop plains, that could be made
handsomely remunerative in this way.
"Astorian."
The Louisiana papers are rejoicing
over the magnitude of this year's sujjar
crop now being harvested. Nearly all
the parishes in the state make a simi
lar report an abundant growth of
cane and a lar?e yield of saccharine.
The crop is estimated at 200,000 hogs
heads, tho largest for twenty two years.
In: many parishes tbe yield will be
2,000 pounds to the acre, and some
fields, it is believed, will turn out
three hogshead to the acre.
A colt's feet are sound and well
formed before be is shod, and the ills
of the horse's feet are occasioned by
shoeing, and cured by "running bare
foot." Most ailments, such as spavin,
ringbone, etc., can be traced to bad
shoeing. A barefoot horse will travel
freer, k'eep-his footing freer, and show
less fatigue from a journey or a hard
day's work than if shod. The kick of
an unshod hors is not as dangerous as
when shod, and stumbling rarely oc
curs cutting, interfering, overreach
ing and forging never. M. C. Weld.
Give all animals, when in a barn,
plonty of straw for bedding, keep them
scrupulously clean and well fed, and
keep all drugs away from them. It is
a mistaken idea that drugs will im
proye their condition. Never allow
any person trj tease live stock in any
way. Save all the manure carefully.
Stock your farm to its fulle'st extent
with horses, cattle, Rheep and hogs,
raise all the feed possible and you will
find you have put your course grains,
fodder and straw to the best possible
use in increasing the profit of the farm.
Tho estimate for this year's Califor
nia raisiti crop vary considerably, but
the range is between 125,000 and 150,
000 twenty pound boxes, worth at
wholesale rates, from 1 50 to 2 per
box. The Malaga district in Spain
from which most of the raisins con
sumed in the "United States are ob
tained, puts up annually from -two to
four millicn boxes. Our shipments to
the cast lat year amounted to about
70,000 boxes; and we have a sure and
profitable market there for all the good
raisinswe can make for the next hun
dred years, or for all the time to come.
