New York and California furnish a
largo proportion of the honey pro
duced in the United States. The New
York State honey crop of 1882 will
run short of its general average, while
California promises a quarter crop this
year against a total failure in 1881.
These depressions it is believed will be
offset by gains in Illinois, Michigan
and other "Western States, so that the
outlook for the honey crop of the
country this srasou is a little better
thahithat of 18S1.
Let the Loner bo thoroughly graded
as it is put on the market; let it be in
clean cratrs, so runde that every passer
by shall be enticed, as he sees it; let
there bo no possible chance for the
honey to leak and disgust the dealer;
and always see that every groceryman
in the vicinity has a supply o this
most beautiful and wholesome article
of food constantly on hand. Tlio best
way to manage sour honey is to heat
it till it boils, which kills the plant
germs which causo the fermentation;
then feed it back to the bees. In the
process of restoring, the honey jseems
to Lave regained its previous excell
ence. Let all remember to keep their hon
ey, whether extracted or comb, in a
dry, warm room. It is best to keep
the extracted honey in open vessels, and
if to be shipped, in barrels or kegs,
theso latter should be coated inside
with paraffine, or beeswax. Let no
one be in a hurry to sell his honey.
It should ho thoroughly graded before
it is sent to market. No pains should
be spared to have the honey look neat,
which will largely increase the price it
will bring. In some parts of the
country tho crop has been good, "in
many othors it is a total failure. It is
to be expected that good prices will
prevail.
A subscriber, says the "American
Agriculturist," asks if sugar can be
safely fed to bees in winter. There is
no other food so g od for bees as pure
sugar. The granulated form is best.
All bee-keepers that have fed this su
gar for winter stores are agreed that
it is even superior to honey for bees.
This is owing, doubtless to itn compo
sition, as it contains more cane sugar,
and also to the absence of pollen, which
is to bo found in all honey. While
pollen generally does no harm to bees,
in winter, it is not good in some cases
and may be the cause of fatal dysen
tery. Dissolve the sugar for feeding
in an equal bulk of water, and heat un
til it boils, and when cold it is ready
to feed.
It will be remembered that many bees
were lostduring tho winter of 1880 81,
from neglect. They were caught by
the exceptionally early season. They
need at least thirty pounds of good
food per hive, and they should be
crowded upon just enough frames to
contain th'eni, by using division boards.
If the bees are to bo packed, this should
bs done as early as October 1st, and if
chaff hives are used, tho packing above
and at the end of the frames should be
added at the tame time. It is always
best to have the fine chaff or sawdust
in sacks. However we winter, whether
in chaff or hives, or in the common
hives with chaff packing, or in cellars,
it will always pay to pack above and
at the side of frames. The hires
should be put into the cellar as early
as November 2st, before tho severe
weather sets in. The hives should be
dry when set in, and in the removal
disturb the bees as little as possible
When in the cellar, remove the tops
of the hives, but not the chaff pillow.
The entrance should be left open. ,
The railroad construction for the
year will exceed 12,000 miles. Tho
total mileage of the country Jan. 1,
1883, will be 116,000 a gain of more
than 22 por cent, on the mileage of
two years ago. Of course there has
been no- corresponding increase in the
population, commerce or railroad traf
fic. It therefore seems as though rail
road builders must be looking to the
future for their profits. The cost of
tha new road built since 1880 is about
$600,000,000.
The track was finished to "West
fork," tho fifty-two mile post last Mon
day. Here will be a short halt as a
bridge of considerable importance spans
that stream and at about mile be
yond is tunnel No. 2 which will not
be opened for several weeks, says the
"Plaindealer."
A UTTLi: rltUfcNOLOCY.
Round eyed persons see much; Iito
much in the senses, but think lets.
Narrow cyd persons, on the other
hand, see Vss, but think more and feel
more intensely. It will be observed
that the eyes of children are open and
round. Their ho' o life is to receire
impressions. It is only when child
hood is maturing toward manhood or
womanhood that thought tnmns at all.
But what is it that most Uuds to re
flection? Experience. Our errors, our
shortcomings, our failures these teach
us to think before we act, to consider
each step, to weigh erery motive.
When, therefore, the upper eyelid
for it is that which has the greatest
amount of mobility droops over the
eye it indicates not merely reflection,
but something painful to reflsct about.
Hence tho length or drooping of h
upper eyelid betokens confession and
penitence. The drooping of half of
the eyelids from the outer angle to tho
center indicates the dispositiom to con
fess ono's faults to parents or seniors,
to a "father confessor" or to the Su
preme Being. The drooping of half of
the eyelids from the inner angle to tho
center betokens tho disposition to re
pent and io do works meet for repen
tance." Closely allied to these sights
arc those of prayerfulness and humili
ty. The former is indicated by the
muscle which turns the directly down
ward, as represented in the picture of
the Madonna. Prayerfulness is usually
large in connection with that of peni
tence, the reason of which is, that be
tween the faculties of penitence
and humility there is the same
close connection as between confession
and prayer. One who has more pray
er than humility has the eye turned
habitually somewhat upward, so that
the upper part of the iris is a littlo
covered bt the upper eyelid so at to
leave a slight space between the iria
and tho lower lid. The reverse is
true of one who has more humility
than prayer. The faculty of truth
. that is, the lore of it is in
dicated by the muscles which sur
rounds the eye, causing folds and
wrinkles. Justice is indicated by the
mu&cles which causes perpendicular
wrinkles between the eyebrows. Full
ness and wrinkles under the eye, for
which soma persons am remarkable,
indicate the love of mathematical accu
racy; and wrinkles curving upward
from the outer angle of the eye and
eyebrow indicate probity of personal
truthfulness. There are three degrees
of the faculty of justice. The first is a
kind of exactness or strict honesty in
small money matters, which some peo
ple would cull closeness and is indi
cated by a singular perpendicular
wrinkle or line between the eyebrows.
Tho second is the description to find
justice in others and is indicated by
two perpendicular lines or wrinkles
one on each side of the center a very
common sign. The third degree is con
scientiousness, or the disposition to
apply the rules of justice to one's self,
and is indicated by three or more
wrinkles across the root of the nose,
exactly between the eyes. It may be
seen in great military commanders, in
masters and teachers, and in those
generally who are fond of exercising
anthority. In those who are wanting
in the power to command and have no
desire for responsibility this sit;n is also
absent. The faculty of command fre
quently acts with that part of justice
which reprimands, or requires others to
do right, and both together produco
that frowning and lowering brow
which is so terrible to evil doors or
to those who love to be approved rather
than condemned.
A company composed of Seattle and
San Francisco men hare organized the
Seattle Hop Growers' Association,
with the cultiration of hops as their
object. They expect to put in cultira
tion the largest field of hops in the
world, and with this object in view
hare purchased a farm of 700 acres im
Snoqualmio valley back of Seattle pay
ing 22 per acre for it. They will
plant 300 acred in March and in subse
quent years will plant the remaining
400. Their accessary expenses during
the coming season will be about 60,
000. The vield of the first year is es
timated at 800 pounds per acre. At
the present price for hop the Erst
years crop would pay for the land, the
clearing, the cultivation and leave a
profit of at least 50 per cent.
A Eugene girl, says the "Guard,"
who has :arroty hair, squint eyes, and
no beau, supplies the absence of a mus
tache by tickling her upper lip with a
shoe brush. When it comet down to
a question of originality the Webfoot
maidens never get left.
