SYMPTOMS OF A
TORPID LlVEii.
A story of Urat.iIIly and IJcaertlon.
A man said to be of tho name of
Sutton, formerly a salesman with a
prominent firm in this city nnd recent
ly employed at "Wolf creek, Oregon, as
a helper to carpenters and in the saw
mill of Henry Smith, is charged with
drunken brutality of a criminal nature
toward his wife, a woman of culture
and refinement. The affair caused
great indignation among the citizens
living in and around Wolf creek; and
jtKehfctory of the case is given asjde-
i!.,, V ""It m IfT
riaueu uy one oi n;ciu 10 an Oregon
ian" reporter. Sutton left his work
and went on a spree, and his wife,
with a true womanly heart of kindness
and love, visited the saloons and drink
ing dens until she found her husband,
when she succeeded in persuading him
to return home. Arrived there ho
turned upon her in drunken wrath,
beating and kicking her upon the head,
breas'.s and spine. A physician of
Eock Point, who is attending the in
jured woman, says that if she lives and
recovers from the beating it is doubt
ful whether she ever again will be able
to walk. Evon while his wife lay at
the point of death Sutton spent the
succeeding two or "three nights in
gambling and drinking, and then left
for Portland. He had bought a stock
of liquors, intending to open another
"dive" upon the line of the O. & C.
railroad, but hearing the expressed in
dignation of the better class of citizens
at lib treatment of his wife, he thought
better of it and sold all his right and
title to tho "tangle foot," deserting his
wife and leaving her without a penny.
Fortunately she was among kind
friends, somo of whom took her to
their home and cared for her needs,
making her comfortable and relieving
her sufferings as much as possible.
She is the daughter of a well known
citizen of California, who has been no
tified of her condition and ia now on
the wav to takfJer to-her old home.
ihc is absolutely helpless, being neith-
ei- able to see, to stand, nor to tfto her
hands. Many citizens of Wolf creek
have expressed their desire to see n
ropo around the neck of Sutton, and ho
will probably give that place a wide
berth. The above statements are
touched for by a prominent official of
tho O. it C road. '"Oregonian."
I'clriQcil Corpses.
Every corpse that is taken to the
Purii morgue is now quickly converted
into a block almost as hard as stone.
The result is obtained by Carre's chem
ical refrigerator, which is capable of re
ducing the temjierature of the con
servatory, where each body is laid out
on something closely resembling a
camp bedstead in stone, to 15 degrees
below zero centigrade. At the baek
of this room is a row of stovo like
compartments, in which the corpses
are boxed up and frozen hard before
exposed to public view. As sn illu
stration of the intense cold thus arti
ficially secured, a Paris journalist, in
describing a visit to the morgue, says
that in opening one of the compart
ments theattendant took the precaution
10 wear a glove, lost "his hand should
be burnt by contact with cold iron."
The eorrse which was taken out of its
receptacle had been there nine hours,
l'iie doctor who accompained thu vis
itor Struck the -dead man on tho
1 feast with a stick and the sound was
j kt as if ha had struck c stone.
The following tablo is" something
that every farmer, old and young
should preserve. It will be found use
ful in measuring land where one of
the dimensions are given. There ore
1G0 square rods in an acre, and there
are 30 J square yards in one rod. This
gives 4,840 square rods in ono acre.
5 yds wide by 9GS yds long is 1 acre.
10 yds wide by 48 1 yds long is 1 acre.
20 yds wide by 242 yds long is 1 acre.
40 yds wide by 121 yds longis 1 acre.
80 yds wide by 601 yds long is I acre.
70 yds wide by 69i yds long is 1 acre.
GO yds wide by SO5 yds long is 1 acre.
Again allowing nine rquare feet to
the yard, 272 J, square feet to the rod,
43,500 square feet to the aero, and
we have another table:
110 feet by 39G feet 1 acre.
120 feet by 363 feet 1- acre.
220 feet by 198 feet 1 acre.
240 feet by 181 J feet 1 acre.

Joliisalism in Missouri. In some

A Pennsylvania farmer says: "Now
my pet sheep is a grade merino. One

During the moth of of November,
says the Coos Bay "News," the jetty
wall at Rock Poiut was advanced 71
feet making tho extension reach a
point 254 feet from the crib work of
1880. Six thousand six hundred and
twenty-cubic yards of rocks were used
during the months in the extension,
the water being 45 feet deep at ths
outer end of the improvement. This
is the largest amount of wort accom
plished in any month since the im
provement was commenced. It h esti
mated that an extension of 150 feet
more will cut a channel through tho
north ppitr as noticeable changes are
already taking place.
