The'San 7of Mecury" believes the
common farnwr -will grow less corn and
wheat and'derotes more of his land to
grazing and timber culture. There is
a ,'fortune awaiting the young mani
who will plant and care for a few acres
of land in T)1ack walnut. lie may not
realize this fortune in bin youth, but by
the timo he is middle-aged, or in the
decline of life when it is most needed,.
it wih be ready for him if he fulfilled
the necessary conditions. Better far
than the endowment policy in the most
aeiurelife insurance compiny is the
blacj: walnut grove on the young
era land- Read the followinn

to this conclusion: "A black walnut
tree will pay 1.25 per year for the
first twenty years. A thousand of
them will pay 1200 a year. Now
every Illinois farmer has had it in his
power to make more money ofi a row
of black walnut trees around his farm
than he can make on his farm if sowed
in wheat. How can' he do it J This
way: A farm of ICO acres would be
10,500 feet in circumference. Now
plant walnut trees four feet apart all
around it and you will have 2760 trees
which will be worth 25 apiece in
twenty years. Again a farmer can
set all his sloughs, low placesand hog
pastures in black walnuts. Two thous
and handsome walnut trees growing on
a farm would be worth 50,000 in
twenty years."
The Hanging at Klamath. Sev
eral of our exchanges have had reports
nd comments on the trial and execu
tion or -'Spokane Ike" at the Klamath
reservation, bmcl -ome inaccuracies and
misstatements have been published.
We have the following, direct report
of the affair from the government
employe at tho agencyr Spokane Ike
shot and killed an Indian doctor who
failed to cure a patient. Ike them fled
to the Columbia river but was captur
ed and returned to Klamath. A
grand jury composed of chiefs ofT the
Indians on the reservation was sum
moned in the ordinary way, and an
indictment for murder was returned.
A petit jury of the Indians was em
paneled, and after a fair trial, Spokane
Ike was found guilty. Agent Nick
erson then submitted a full report
of proceedings to the Commissioner of
Indian Affairs and the Secretary of the
Interior. Secretary Teller sent word
immediately that there was no U. S.
law touching the case, where the offense
was by one Indian against another,
and that the matter was all in the
hands of tho Indians- themselves.
Thereupon Iko was sentenced and ex
ecuted. The Indians appointed execu
tioners, built a scaffold and aimed to
send Ike to the happy hunting grounds
in approved "Boston man's" style.
bey made a bunglesorae job of it, but
Ihe execution was not so brutal as has
ben reported. Just before the trap
La sprung, Ike broke the frail rope
ktied his wrists and, throwing his
above- his head caught the rope.
pd six feet, and his neck was
-ariw tnr- linlil
f adjusted il after thofall,
but no one touched the body or arms,
and the Indians resent the report that
they caught hold o him and pulled
down until he was strangled. "Tid
ings." The "Operator" says it takes nerve,
patience and good temper to make a
good telephone operator, and those who
lack any one of these essentials had
better let the profession alone. Only
one person out of fivo, on theaverage,
hasr a good telephone voice. They
speak too low or too loud.. Hot more
than one person out of twenty has the
voice which a telephone operator should
have pleasant, even, plain and de
void of peculiarities. Let one of the
best operators talk to you over twenty
miles of wire, and you will fancy that
he stands beside jou.
President Arthur, it is said, is far
from being superstitious, but he has a
presentiment that lie will die before
his term of office expires. So think
ing, a shadow is cast upon his life.
When people give way to a morbid
feeling cf this kind, it becomes a dis
ease which sometimes serves to bring
about the very result apprehended.
History is full of such instances among
the superstitious.
