Forty carpenters are now at work putting up a largo water tnnk' just south of the new depot at this point. The dimensions are as follows: Foundation 32x32 five feet deep, of solid stone. Capacity of tank 54 thousand gallons; woight of tank when foil 250 tons. Tank will be of red wood staves and iron hoops run every 10 inches. The water is to be run in hundred feet in two inch pipes and will force itself one hundred feet above the tank if necessary. Depot is com pleted and is 24x30, of Swiss style of architecture, and presents a very fine appearance, situated between the high hills. Carpenters now at work on depot will move to Riddles today and Myrtle creek will drop into its past gloomy appearanco and already a great change has taken place -in its streets, which do not present so lively an ap pearance as some weeks ago. Marks Wollenberg & Co's. new building is fast nearing completion. It is a well built structure, every way adapted for the use it is intended for in storin" O grain and freight. J. B. McCIean the foreman of bridge work is sadly in need of carpenters. This class of mechanics are very scarce. All the Portland papers contain advertisements for men but yet only a few lias arrived. Wages range from 2.75 to S3.30 per day. The car used by Mr. J. II. Small, agent, will also move to Rid dlesburgon the 20ih. This car will keep to the front until the track meets the C. P. R. K. from the other end. It is fitted up very comfortably and contains all the furniture of a firstclas3 mercantile country house. One end is partitioned off fur use of those jolly senduetors Bellinger and Stroud. As soon as Riddle is reached the time of passenger trains will be considerably shortened. Will probably reach there about 7:30 P. m. instead of S:30. Mr. J. H. Harris, the indefatigable worker and superintendent of construction is very much pleased with the way work is progressing on tunnels. Ho expects to reach Abrahams' mill this winter. The large warehouso at Riddle of Abraham i: Co. will be used by the company for storeagc of freight. Mr. Small will have a good force at work and quick dispatch will be given freight. The road to Canyonvillo 13 being put in good shape for hauling. The V. U. Telegraph Co. will commence the con struction of the new It. R. line from Koseburg at once to follow the track along south at Purrish's and will be in direct communication with head ofii ces in Portland. More anon The star-route cases were given to the jury last Thursday, the 7th instant, Judge Wylie's charge being against the defendants, whom he evidently wished to punish for their rascality. Several time3 the jury reported that they were unable to agree and asked to be dis charged, but the Judge sent them back for further deliberations, stating that wrong for the government to bear the great expense of the trial and not get a verdict. At last, on Monday, the Court consented fo accept a partial VPrillVh. finlo Xllnsr r,4 n.otult guilty, acquits Peck and Vaile, and disagrees as to Brady and the Dorseys. It is understood that ten of the jury favored their conviction a queer "vindication," after their boasting. The lawyers of the prosecution assert that they cau easly convict them on the second trial, with the help of in formation gained in the first. Spcretnry Blaine furnishes a long artie'e to a weekly maga7ine of Chic ago upon the South American policy of the Garfield administration. The following are the more salient points: The foreign policy of President Gar field's administration had two principal objects in view, tho first to bring about a peace and prevent future wars in North and South America, and the second to cultivate such friedly com mercial relations with all American countries as would-lead to a large in crease in the export trade of the Uni ted States in supplying those fabrics in which we are abundantly able to coinjK'te with the manufacturing coun tries of Europe. A UaljjN Afskjin. Tim simplest afghan that I know of is nitted in double white zephyr, and with very coarse wooden needles. Cast on us many stitches as your judg ment prompt, and knit a perfect plain piece twico the length of the width. Double this, and tack together with bows of any colon d satin ribbon that may suit your fancy. This is very effective and very, very wcrm. Another pretty afghan for n cradle requires about eighteen QUjiceSiOfkWool. . is the b$t to use for this afghan. -Utio ivory or wooden needles about the sizo of a small lead pencil. Cast on 31 stitches, and knit plain as you would a garter, except that you make ono stitch at tho beginning of each needle by putting the thread over the needle first, and after knitting fifteen stitches nar row once, knit 31 times across with each color, using first the red, then white, then black, till each color has been repeated three times in one strip; with the last coloromit making a stitch, and simply narrow in the middle. Knit six stripes. Join them by crotch eting them together with old gold zephyr, putting the same :olors ngainst each other. Finish tho points with tassels or balls of the same color as points. FImI Clnts Koail Horses. Very fast roadsters ore tho most valuable in the market of any class of horses produced boing in de mand at high prices for gentlemen's driving. The extravagant prices paid for theso fliers by -vealthy gentlemen who have a pride in owning Gne-styled drivers that will take the lead on the road, is something almost incredible. Any breeder who raises first or second class trotters can find a market for them at high figures. Those able to trot a mile in 2:25 or better will sell for-com- S5,QQQto afiOOrotb-tinr first and second class, with good style, finding a ready market at theso high figures, and bringing considerably more for privnte driving than they are worth for public racing. It is often not the temptation to win large sums in purses that induces owners to engage their stock in trotting circuits, for it is only the fastest steeds that win any considerable amount over expenses in trotting circuits, lut breeders that enter their stock in these trotting events to give them market value. There is an extensive demand for first-class roadsters, that will con tinue to increase as the country grows in wealth and population. "National Live Stock Journal." A new and desirable papier macho process for covering floors is described as follows: The floor is thoroughly cleaned. Theholesand cracks are then filled with paper putty, made by soak ing newspapers in a paste made of wheat flour, water and ground alura, as follows: To one pound of flour add three quarts of water and a tablespoon ful of ground alum, and mix thoroughly. The floor is then coated with the paste, and then a thickness of manilaor hard ware paper is put on. If two layers are desired, a second cover of manila paper is put on. This is allowed to dry thoroughly. The manila paper ia then covered with paste, and a layer 'of wall paper any stylo or desizn w"3T! is put on. After allowing this to thoroughly dry it is covered with two or more coals of sizing, made by dis solving one half pound of glue in two quarts of hot water. After olio wing this to dry, the surface is given one coat of "hard oil-finish varnish," which comes and is bought already prepared. This allowed to dry thoroughly, when the floor is ready for use. The process is represented to be durable and cheap, and besides taking the placo of matting, carpet, oil-cloths or other like covering, makes the floor air tight, and :an be washed or scrubbed.
