h A ivory prominent San Francisco
physician irrites: "Leprosy is reveal
ing itself about the lips and tongues of
the "boys who smoke cigarettes mado
by the Chinese. The disease though
fatal, is slow in giving tokens of it's
first approaches." He goes on to stato
farther that no less than 100 cases of
infection of the loathsome diseaso by
cigarette smoking had come under his
own notice This new horror thus de
reloped should prvo a sufficient warn
ing to parents and youths, especially on
the Pacific Coast., where about all the
cigarettes are manufactured by the
Chinese. It is a disgusting habit at
best, and when coupled with this new
danger there is reason for the most vig
orous efforts to suppress the vice into
which the boys of this State are being
dragged every day by evil companions.
Boys say, "I don't smoke Chinese-made
cigarettes." It is an easy thing for
manufacturers and dealers to say their
goods are made by white men. It is
another thing to show beyond a shad
ow of a doubt that each particular cig
arette is what is claimed for it.
About thirty men are now at work
on the Coos bay wagon road, in the
canyon, some two miles above the toll
house. They started in at the summit,
and havo mado a good wagon road as
far as they have worked this way. In
order to avoid going over the moun
tain by the old 'trail it is the intention
to at onco cut a now one through the
canyon to intersect the road recently
made, and then the mail will be carried
over that route on a mule until the
completion of the road.. J. B. Hunt,
of Dorr, has the contract for putting
in the small bridges between the moun
tain and the north fork of the Coquille
river and last Monday commenced
work at Cherry creek. The report is
that the buckboards will be running in
obout six weeks. "Coast Mail."
Putting up the hair of children in
curling papers brakes and checks its
growth; often pull it out by the roots.
Curling irons are fatal to the hair of
children and grown persons. The heat
snaps up the juico out of the fibers as
effectually as fire or frost snaps the
vitality of a green branch, leaving but
a dry withered skeleton. The prac
tice which hair dressers have of friz
zing out the hair with a comb to make
the most of it is one of the most cruel
injuries that can be inflicted on the
living hair. The comb cuts it in the
act of frizzing it. You can test the
truth of this by combing out the hair
after it has been so dressed;
Among the candidates already in the
field for positions in the Legislature
are the following: Hon. C. B. Moores
of this city for-chief clerk of the house,
and J. W. Strange of Douglas as assist
ant; J. T. Gregg and J. C. Peebles of
this city aro candidates for chief clerk
of the senate; C. H. Monroe, E. J.
Frazier, II. L. Skiff and J. H. Mc
. Oormick for doorkeepers, with numer
ous applicants for clerkships. Among
thoso seeking positions as page are
Frank Byron, Percy Willis, George
Piper, Fred. Strang, Charles L. Litch
field of this city, and Grant G. Osborn
and Sterling Hill of Eugene City.

Something that never fails Fever
nnd Ague To the sick it is of little
consequence how they are cured,
whether from a rational view of the
disease or by the rules defined for the
guidance of the profession, so long as
the cure is certain and expeditious.
To a suffering man the question on the
relative merits of quinine or calomel ir
uninteresting. Tho faculty may

pels doubt ere the disciples of Escula

There arc many at the age of thirty to
sixty who arc troubled with too frequent
evacuations of the bladder, often accom
panied by a slight smarting or burning
sensation and a weakening of the system
in a manner the patient cannot account
for. On examining the urinary deposits a
ropy sediment will often be found, and
sometimes small particles of albumen will
appear, or the color will be of a thin milk

who die of this difficulty, ignorant of the
cause, which is the second stage of seminal
