'Wpw o .". r tBICH OF TWO EXMtlSSIOXS. The History f tbe Trrms Incle Snm-and Brother Jonathan. To the Editor of tbe "Sun." Sir: -what is the historic origin and what is the exact signification of each of the two patronymics of our country, namely, Brother Jonathan and Uncle Sara? Are they one and the same man? C. W. W. New York, July 19. After "Washington was appointed commander of the patriot army in the Revolution ho had great difficulty in obtaining supplies. On cno occasion, when no way could be devised by him and his officers to supply the wants of the army. Washington wound up the conference with the remark: "We must consult Brother Jonathan." He referred to Jonathan Trumbull, then Governor of Connecticut, in whose judgment he had confidence. Govern or Trumbull helped the General out of his difficnU!", i,'-rd the ex pression used by Washington became a popular by word in the army and eventually a nickname for the nation. The name Uncle Sam, as applied to' the United States, is said to have orig inated in the war of 1812. An inspec tor of army provisions at Troy named Samuel Wilson was called by his work men "Undo Sam." One da' some body asked ono of the workmen what the letters "U. S." printed on a cask meant. The workman replied that he supposed it must mean Uncle Sam. The joke was afterward spread in the army, and this, according to the his torian Frost, was the origin of the na tional sobriquet. New York, August 17. The expec tation in "Wall rtreet, that a dividend ou preferred stock of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company would bo diclare'', wasdisappcinted. Yesterday, at the regulor meeting of the Board of Directors of the company of which com mon rumor had it the dividend was to be declared, tho subject was not even to bo mentioned. The routine business was attended to chiefly relating to con struction matters. Itisunderstoodthat the Directors informa'ly agreed among themselves that it would not be pru dent to declare a dividend at this tme. The chief reason, is said to bo the hostile attitude towards the company of the last Congress, coupled with tho desire to avoid possible animosity in the next Congress through an appearance of prosperity. An officer of the company stated that the Directors thought it prudent to defer any dividend until all the funds necessary to finish the road wero in hand. CnARiTY. This is usually served cold. When warm it is apt to spoil, and must, therefore, be used at home. Tako ono part heart and ono hundred parts talk, and stir together until the heart is dissolved, and add sufficient policy and worldly wisdom to give it flavor. Charity made by this recipe will keep a long tiinp in any climate. Half tbe silver half-dollars circulat ed in Montana are alleged to bo coun terfeits made by the Chinese. They are described as of exactly the weight of the genuine ones and one tbirU second part of an inch larger in diam eter. They contain only sixteen cents worth of silver, which is all on the surface. In the Tiliolc History of .llcdlcloc No preparation lias ever performed such marvellous cures, or maintained so wide a reputation, as Ayeu's Cher ry Pectoral, which is recognized ns tbe world's remedy for all diseases of tho throat and lungs. Its long-con-tinuc.i series of wonderful cures in all climates has made it universally known as a safe and reliable agent to employ. Against ordinary colds, which are the forerunners of more serious disorders, it acts spppdily and surely, always re lieving suffering, and often saving life. The protection it affords, by its timely use in throat and chest disorders, makes it an invaluablo remedy to be kept al ways on hand in every home. No per son can afford tj bo without it, and those who have once used it never will. From their knowledge of its composi tion and effects, physicians urc the Cherry Pectoral extensively in their practice, and clergymen recommend it. It is absolutely certain in its remedial effects, and will always cure when cures are possible. For Sale by all Dealers. Holloway's Pills Never Despair Something that never fails Fever and Ague To the sick it is of littlo consequence how they are cured, whether from a rational view of the disease or by tho rules defined for the guidance of the profession, so long as the cure is certain and expeditious. To a suliering man the question on the relative merits of quinino or calomel if uninteresting. The faculty may wrangle and discuss their various theor ies, but Dr. Holloway's treatment dis pels doubt ere the disciples of Escula pius have finished tho first stage. Holloway's Pills are the only remedies which effect a speedy and radical cure without danger of a relapse. Read tho advertisement elsewhere. Important Caution. There are many at the age of thirty to sixty who are troubled with too frequent evacuations of the bladder, often accom panied by a slight smarting or burning sensation and a -weakening of the system in a manner the patient cannot account for. On examining the urinary deposits a ropy sediment will often be found, and sometimes small particles of albumen will appear, or the color will be of a thin milk ish hue, again changing to a dark and tor pid appearance. There are many men who die of this difiiculty, ignorant of the cause, which is the second stage of seminal weakness.
