r SEWS ITEXS. Portland (Or.), July 7. General William Meade and Duno TJrnay, two Umatilla chiefs, leave for Washington to-night, regarding railroad grants through their reservation. Portland (Or.), July 7. Eev. Geo. W. Sloan, an Episcopal clergymen at Cheny, W. T., aged GO years, was tak en from here to the insane asylum at Steilacoom, W. T., to-day. Yreka, July 7. The body of Fred Raynes, who was drowried in Klamath river two weeks ago, was recovered to day three miles below the place where he fell in. His remains were brought here this evening. At the close of the late war two wo men of Penfield, Ga., began" farming with an old blind horse; Now they own a c;ood plantation, well stocked. Our women of to-day should learn a lesson from this, and at the close of the next war procure an old blind horse and begin farming. As a warning against bettint; the fato of Major Savory, in England, should be remembered. At the recent Derby he won 2500 on a hcrse-,and the unexpected luck affected biru to such a degree that he had an apoplectic fit and died on the followinpf-day. Those who lost are doing well. The "Standard" says that Mrs. A. K. Babcock, of Walla Walla, whose petition for a divorce from her hus band, on the grounds of adultery, was under consideration of the court, prob ably becoming tired of waiting for a decision, a few days since eloped with one Lem Miner, and started for llogue river valley. Sha left tix children be hind her and is evidently going to take a fresh start in life. On the nigth of the 3d inst., the barn of C. G. Durland, 21 miles from Oak land, Douglas Co., was struck by light ning and burned, together with six horses, two of which were worth 400 each, wagons, buggy, machinery, farm ing implemement, hay, oats, in all val ued at 5000. Nothing was saved and there was no insurance. Mr. Durland is a well-to-do farmer and will be able to rebuild and restock at once. A western editor offered a prize of $50 and a year's subscription, for the best written proposal of marriage from a lady. Ho picked out a nice propo sal from a beautiful and wealthy wid ow, answered it, accepf ing the proposal and with the threat of a breach of prom ibo suit actually captured her. Editors may not acquire wealth by writing twenty-three hours a day, but when their genius takes the right shoot they procure the persimmons. The letter from Rev. Cruzan, pub lished in the "Standard" yesterday morning, completely clears Mr. L. Christiensen, the former partner of James Welch, from the unjust sus picion of having been concerened in his disappearance. That gentleman and his friends have been much an noyed by the rumors put in circulation, the untruthfulness and injustice of which have only been equalled by the difficulty of proving their falsily. Of course all who knew Mr. Chris tiensen were convinced of his inno cence, and now those who had any suspicion of his guilt must be con vinced that they have done him a great wrong. Portland (Or.), July 8. Captain F. Lankeman of the German ship Fritz paid a 950 fine today for bringing nineteen more Chinese from Hongkong than the law allows. The British steamer Devonshire ar rived to-day from Hongkong with 84G Chinese. Large quantities of silk hand kerchiefs and scarfs were found by Custom-house Inspectors secreted in old baskets with false bottoms. The entire cargo of coolies was sent imme diately to Cabinet landing to work on the Northern Pacific Railroad. The Devonshire reports three stesm crs loading in Hongkong- with .coolies for San Francisco. She passed the ihip Kate Davenport, loaded with Chinese bound for Portland, when she was three days out from Hongkong. Camp Thomas (A. T.), July 7. The murderers of Col vig and his scoutswere recognized as belonging to therenegade Cibicu scouts, who revolted last fall. The bodies of the murdered men were brought into San Carlo3 and buried last evening. Colvig has a Rister at Rock Point, Oregon. Wood and Con nell, traders at San Carlos, had a nar row escape. They were returning from Globe, and when near the point at which the renegades Trere lying in ambush, were ordered by the Indians not to proceed any farther or they would be killed. They retreated with out asking any questions; both suc ceeded in reaching San Carlos during the night in safety. It is thought that there are about fifty White Mountain Indians absent The correct number will be known to night by the number of rations underdrawn. Everythig is quiet at San Carlos ami tho tub agency. Notice. Land Office at ItosEuuito, Or., I June 14, 1882. f Notice is hereby given that the follow- injr.numpd KPtllnr lm filwt .nntipo rtC Ina .
