Mrs. .1 WLTTLitiai. A Ill.N r TO ri'liM'ECTORS. The following sensible article wo take from the Ketchum "Keystone:" "We have never advocated the giving away of ai thing, unless, perhaps, wo oxcept a few occasions when chanty made the demand, or a man had a con tagious disease that didn't fit him, therefore we think we can be allowed to give the prospector a hint or two without being charged with, acting from se'Gsh motives. During the past 20 days there have been a number of capitalists on tho river in search of' investments in the way of prospects, but, we regret to state, without much success. Now, why is this? Is it be cause they did not offer what proper ties are worth, or is the prospector to blame? A fact or two will enable tho reader to form his own conclusions. There are, perhaps, something in tho neighborhood of a thousand prospects on Wood River to day that are moro or less promising- Five hundred of these are in the market; but how many buyers have been in tho Geld this sea son. "We doubt if there have been 25. According to this estimate there is, on an average, only one buyer to every 20 claims offered; in other words, the pros pector stands only one chance in 20 of consulting a buyer, and when his man conies along what is the result. In many cases it is like an instance which occurred hero one day last week, which we will cite: A middle man learned cf a prospect not far from Ketchum which was offered at?l,500. He con sulted the owners and they agreed to accept this sum for" their claim. He then reported to his principal and the price was accepted. Returning to the owner of the claim to niako tho transfer, ho was informed that nothing less than 50,000 would buy it. Other parlies then endeavored to make the purchase, and within 2t hours from tho time tLjtfaimwaOffrredaT"Sh-. L5&&, its owners jumped it up tp S10,. work done on it in "the meantime, nor had any new discoveries been made. ' The advance was simply tho result of an inkling that a rich operator was af ter the property. There was no sale, of course, and an expert who has sinco visited the property affirms that 1, 000 is a big price for what is in sight. Now, if tho prospector does noi wish to sell, let him say so. If his proper ty is in tho market let him name his price and stick to it. Just such work as that mentioned disgusts tho very man we all desire to have interested, for in a large measure tho development of the country depends upon their cap ital. If the possessor of a claim has faith in his propsrty and is able to work it, by all means do so. "We have always advocated this. If not able to develop it, why not sell out or take in a partner who is able to go ahead and ascertain what there is in tho prospect? The deathlike grip with which many possessors of mere gopher holes hang on their claims, and with no intention of either selling or developing, except, ' perhaps, just enough to niako their title hold in the eyes of tho law, is dis astrous to tho progress of tho country, and sure to end in starvation for tho owner. A man might just as well own a farm and refuse to work or sell it, or permit others to mako it a source of income to him. Thero are dozens of good prospects within a few mile of Ketchum that to day oucht to ba turning out a revenuo for somebody. TIjcMlfe'H Lint KN. About a month ago A. B. Camp, ac companied by Ira wife and child, came from San Fryincisco for tho purpose of taking out soapstone. Last Monday his wife visited him at his work. They were about starting for their cabin, a short distance away. Mr. Carcp was about to enter the tunnel to secure a shovel which he desired to take with him, when his wife remarked: "Never mind, I'll get it; you lake tho child." As she started for the entrance of tho tunnel she turned around and said, "Kiss me Grst." Tho husband did so, and she started for the tunnel's mouth, again, but just before she reached it she again turned around and laughing ly said: "Kiss mo once more." Her husband complied for the second time and then she started for the tunnel. She had just reached the entrance when tho mass of rocks and dirt abovo gave way, burying the unfortunate woman in tho debris and causing her instant death.
