The editor of the "Democrat" appar. ently derives no small amount o com- for,t in quoting from the report of tho Secretary of State for 1880. While about it, why not quote some of tha. information contained on pages, 52, 53 and 64 of-the same document, where it shows that Mr. Earhart saved the State nearly 4000 in his audit of tfca accounts filed hypomori; BkorlflTo for the conveyance of convicts and Jn ane There ia also soma interesting reading matter on page 5 of tbe sama report, where a comparison is made of' the expenses of tha Stafo government during four years of Democratic su premacy and two years under Repub lican management- These, for the two j ears ending September, 1876, wera $557,351.57. During tho next two years they amounted to 474,241.66. During the first two years of Republi can financiering the total expenditure for all purposes, including 33,868 de ficiencies paid in excess of appropria tions of 1876, amounted to but 407, 802.32. Turn to pag 8 and quote tho followingi "The aggregate amount of State indebtedness, September 1, '78, was 737,717.34, exclusive of accrued interest on outstanding warrants, etc., and including the Indian war debt of 1877-8. Tho total amount of State debt September 1, 1880, exclusive" of interest, was 511,376.15, showing a reduction during biennial term just ended of S226.341.I9." If tho editor of tho "Democrat" can point us to any report of a Democratic State officer in tbe history of Oregon wherein a reduc tion is shown in the indebtedness-of sy the State, he will confer a favor upon us and partially redeem the record made by the party during its eight years supremacy, during which time, as shown by tho official reports, the State debt was increased from $115, 847J7 in 1870 to 737,71738 in1878 in Increase to the alarming extent of 621,869.61. These statements are such as will be of deep interest to tho tax-payers of Oregon. By tho way, will not .lie "Democrat" inform its readers what political party was in power in the Legislative assembly of 1 880, when the State lax was reduced from seven to 6ve and one half mills on the dollar? Democrats of Oregon, you cannot deny these facts; they are too plain; for figures, though at times perplexing, have never been known to lie. In some future issue we shall take pleasure in presenting our Demo cratic friends with a few nuts to crack. Meanwhile, let the intelligent voter carefully study tho above quotations from the Secretary's report, they being but a few of tho many choice political gems therein contained. Albany HeraU. Icelands Parliament. The Assem bly of Iceland, writes a correspondent from that far-off land, is composed of thirty-six members, thirty of whom are elected by the people and six appointed by the King of Denmark. The thirty popular members elect six of their num ber to serve with the six appointed by the crown as an upper house. All bills must pass both houses and be duly ap proved by the King, who holds the ve to power. Sessions aro held once in two years, and the members are paid 6 kroner (1.68) per diem and travel ing expenses. I don't know how they make out on tho mileage. There are no end of miles here in any given di rection, but it would take an 'American Congressman half his time to make even cocktail money at theso rates. Tho island is divided into fifteen dis tricts, over each of which is a sysell- mand, or judge, who collects the taxes. Tha 8ysellroaud goes over his district once a year and informs tbe people where he will meet them and receive their taxes. London, "May 18. The fear of be ing arrested in connection with the murder of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Burke is now so general in Ireland that peasantry traveling outside their districts are applying to the police for passports. Many emigrants who aro leaving the south c Ireland for Amer ica resort to the same course. Salinas, May 19. The south-bound stage from Soledaldwos stopped by two masked men at Middle Gulcb, a few miles south of Oak Grove last evening. Wilson, tho driver, was requested to haqd downlVells, Fargo & Coi'a bor.
