Ba u -. TOMLAUIV What H Is mill How lo Mnkr II A Wonder- ful DlKtoTcrj', anil One or Urcnt Value l Cattle lcn.- .Tho' following account of a new plan of storing up green feed for winter use, or for use at seasons when hay and oth er dry feed is generally used, will be read with interpst by stock-raisers on tlio Paci6c Coast The method of pre paring the ensilage is described in a letter from C. T. Cromwell, of New York, lo the Mew Mexican, and its publication in that journal has attracted wide spread attention among the agri culturists of the Territory. Mr. Crom well merely suggest the adoption of a plan for tho winter feeding of cattle which lias sprung into use among far merssin the Eastern States with such rnpidity, that it wiTT soon be in univer tfnl'use. Tho importance of tho matter is evidenced by the fact that only a few weeks since a convention was held in Ucw York, consisting of gentlemen in terested in. stock feeding from all parts of tho countrj, to consider the best methods of preparing and storing the feed. GRASS AND OTHER GREEK STUFF STOWED AWAY AND PRESERVED AS VEG- ETARLES ARE IN CANS. Ensilage is green crops stored in such a way as to preserve all of its juices and nutritive properties for winter use. In fact, it is precisely the eame system that has been adopted for the last five years in preserving fruits, vegetables and other articles for human food, so that they may retain all their succu lent qualities for eonsumption, at times and .in places when and where they would not be otherwise obtainable. The discovery was made by Auguste fioflart, a Frenchman, that green crops could be stored in such a manner as to preserve their freshness and sweetness for.a .year or more, and that when so preserved cattle would eagerly eat it in the winter in preference to any other food. THE "SIW," OR PRESERVING PIT OR TANK. He constructed a pit which ho named a "silo," and into this was thrown all sorts of green rops that form the cus tomary food of cattle. & heavy press ure was placed upon it until it was compressed into as small a space as possible. When the "silo" was opened in winter it was found that the mass of herbage. had undergone a slight fer mentation and resembled cheese in its constituency. It had become so com pact that it had to be cut with a knife or dug out with a sharp edged spade or shovel On being, offered to cattle they eagerly devoured it and showed an evident preference for it over dry food. It at once came into use because cattle thrived on it, that in case of milch cows the product of milk was in creased, and that it was a great saving in cost, being much cheaper than dry food. HOW TO CONSTRUCT A ,;SILO." The "silo" arejeonstructed in various ways, the most common of whiqji seems to have been a pit or trench about fif teen feet deep and ten feet wide, and to contain any quantity of food needed. They should be built on sloping ground, and made water tight with cement, if in o soil that is at all pamp; but there seems to be a diversity of opinion as to the best mode of construction, some preferring to build a strong board "silo" abovo ground. About the details there are a variety of opinions, some preferring to throw the green crop in, as it is gathered; others to have it chopped fine with a cuttor. The latter would seem to bo prcferablo for close packing. But, however, much differ ence of opinion there may "bo as to these details, all agree that it is the best and most profitable system of win ter, feed ever adopted. ALI. MANNER OF GREEN STUFF MAY BE USED IN MAKING THE "ENSILAGE-" OR VEGETABLE CHEESE. As to the material used, anything that tho cattle will eat when it is grow ing is'available, and the greater the variety the better. The main point is that everything should be thrown on vyhile it is green and juicy. One stock raiser, near Boston, avers that by his system of "ensilage" he can make an acre of ground keip two cows for a year. Tho material is said to be ripe ' and ready for use in about one month after it had been packed. Were it not for tho weight of evidence from hun- . dreds of stock men in its favor, tho nystem would recommend itself on the ground of common sense. Clover and haj we know loses a great portion of weight in tho process of drying, and that portion that is lost must bo the "most nutritive. Ensilage ha met such strong approval from those who have tried it, that it will doubtless, in ,tho"course of timo, oome into general use for winter feed.
