perinduced by the invention and applk
cation of machinery, necessarily con
gregated artiians and operatirM in
cities, or certain centers of business.
The monotonous humdrum life of these
laborer! and operatives created a thirst
for some kind of enjoyment. This is
one of the causes which gave rise to the
lodge of Odd Fellows at Manchester.
These lodges first' took the name of
Ancient and Honorable loyal Odd
Fellows. Their organization, at first,
was solely for recreation and convivial
purposes. A little later the convivial
element gave place to the benevolent,
a recognition of those high dutiss
which man owes to man. Lodges en
gaged in this advance and reform took
the' name of "Independent Order of
Odd Fellows." Thomas "Wildy planted
the fruitful seeds of this Order in the
virgin soil of America bjr instituting
Washington Lodge No. 1. at Balti
more Maryland April 26th, 1819.
This is, therefore, it 63d anniversary.
As' we have briefly seen it was a crea
ture of emergencies undergoing eon
tiuual metamorphosis gathering ma
terial at every step for future use.
ITS WORK.
Beginning with one Lodge and a
mere handful of membrrs, it has grows
into the Sovereign Grand Lodge, com
posed of 7,371 Subordinate Lodges,
with a membership of 466,857. In
the year ending Dec. 31, 1880, it paid
251,185 weeks of benefits, relieved
41,879 brothers, 5597 widow families,
spnt for the relief of brothers 1,041,
831 and for the relief of widowed fam
ilies $145,621. During the same year
it expended $13,387 for the education
of orphans, $267,554 for the-burial of
deceased members and $52,352 for
special relief. Its total expenditures
for relief during the same year were
$1,520,647, .and its gross receipts
$4,178,506. '

"While the members have given these
magnificent beneficencs they have born
the burdens of government equally with
ther citizens. No man service, or
visions of vain glory ever move her
members in this direction. But it is
simply the perception and performance
of a sacred duty; the fulfillment of a
pledge, which Odd Fellows know how
to take and keep. Founded upon the
principles of eternal justice, its work
is purely reciprocal. A brother be
longing to a lodge in Arizona, residing
near Jacksonville, became serious ill;
his card showed that he was entitled to
$7 as weekly benefits. Jacksonville
Lodge- paid the three weeki benefits,
asked for, and informed the brothers
home lodge, in Arizona. Scarcely had
this business been finished before Jack
sonville Lodge, No. 10. was notified'
of the death of one her members, -by
this same Lodge in Arizona, who took
charge of the deceased brothers re
mains, paid all funeral expenses and
reported the fasts- to Jacksonville
Lodge. This my brothers, and' utters,
and friends isliving.and performing the
precepts of the golden rule. "Whatso
ever you would have others do unto
you, do you even so unto them." What
other 'society, organization, or associa
tion performs these saced obligations
so welll The above is only one out of
hundreds of similar incidents; but in
sufficient to show the reciprocal spirit
of our fraternity, and its sterling in
tegrity of principle. In this connection
I cannot refrain from a brief reference
to a divine work performed, and still
practiced weekly by our sister Lodge
at Jacksonville. About six years ago
a brother was stricken with paralysis.
Unfortunate circumstances, brought him
in areari for dues, which annulled hit
rights to weekly benefits. To him the
day roust have been Indeed -dark and
dreary. But the covenanted brothers
all honor to them for it saw the
ordeal, responded to the call of mercy,
removed the disability, by contributing
gratuitously sufficient funds to restore
the brother to a proper standing in the
Iode, and place his feet on the rock of
fraternal love. From that time on this
afflicted brother has received hfs week
ly benefits. Nay more than this, this
nob'e lodge has done all that medical
skill, and the judicial expenditure of
means for medical aparatus could pos
sibly do to restore the brother to baalth.

Our discourse would be incomplete -were
we to fail a'just rememberance of our
sisters work. It may truly be said that
woman is first in peace, and first in the
hearts of men. .Our brothers can most
all testify to the truth of the latter,
Odd Fellows in name, they make' it
even by doubling. The condition of
woman in society has always been an
index to the character and honor of the
nation. Our civilization with its cult
ure, refinement; and men of letters
owes its existence to the modifying, re
fining, and elevating-influences of wo
man upon society. Of late years a
laiger knowledge and a better it ill, is
begining to clothe the winds of reason,
which will eventualy accord to our sis
ters, our mothers and our wires, their
natural and inalienable rights. The
relics of an ignorant barbarism, blind
traditional belief, and stupid dogmas,
that consigning woman to the position
of a menial, are rapidly disappearing
before the moral force of reason and
justice. The iconoclastic force of a
riper manhood, and a better intellectu
ality is breaking the fossilized idols of
superstition removing the flaming
sword from the tree of knowledge, and
restoring to the women of the land, a
portion, at least, of that justice of wnich
they were robbed by bigotry and su
perstition. I hail the day when that
ostracism which has tabooed woman
from certain spherea of action, shall
have been consigned to the tomb of
oblivian. Odd Fellows long since
grasped this progressive idea. The
Rebekah members of the fraternity
constitute one-of its most efficient fac
tors of divine work. Their keen in
structive perception, moral sense of
justice and sympathetic nature gives
them a pre-eminent position in the
field of benevolence. They are emi
nently fitted to deal with the divine
and emotional nature of men; gather
up'and unite the broken cords of lore,
and stimulate all to higher deeds of ex
cellence. Thus my brothers, and sis
ten, and friends, we have aimed to
unite all the good elements into our
organization. We have aimed to fos
ter truth, justice, and humanity; culti
vate frindship, love and truth, and
practice the divine precepts of the
golden rule. In the sixty three years
of our life we have steadily advanced.
Onward and upward is our motto.
The spirit of our fraternity has in
fused itself fnto the Kfe blood of Eu
rope, warmed the planes of Switzerland
and the Netherlands, ramified Austra
lia and the islands of the sea. Its lover
is working in the hearts of men,
elevating and fitting their minds for
the perception of higher duties, and
the enjovment of a riper manhood and
a better civilization. It is beatiuz the
sword into plow shares, and turning
sperrs into pruning hooka It ispouring
theoil of peace on troubled waters of life.
It is cooling the fevered brow with the
rippling fountains of fraternal love.
