This inquiry, now that Mr. George
is a candidate for 10 election, is vrry
pertinent. Our Democratic friends
are anxious to know and tlipy should
know. lfthpyvvill open thpir ear,
thev shall know and if tliPV will read
they can inform themselves, whether
the information bo satisfactory or not.
In the first place, the great work of o
representative from Oregon is-to pro
cure appropriations from congress for
the improvement of our rivers and
harbors. Wo are entitled to lut a
single 6ico and wc will show directly
that Mr. George has mada his voice
heard and made his influence felt
greatly to the advantage of Oregon.
Oregon was reinesented in the 46th
Congress by u Democrat,"- John Whit
caW very much bragged of forahili
ty by his partisan press" Mr. Whitra
kei'h best efforts, iif a Cong-ess where
his par'.y was in the mnjoiity, pro
cured an aggregate appropriuticn ot
Jess than 200,000 after his .vcond
session. Mr. George took his seat last
December was immediately placed on
o is of llio most ill) ortnnt comuiitteps
and ly faithful and earnest v.tk at
his first cession tho showing it: For
the Cascade locks $2Gj,000, Ior
Columbia $75,000, upper Columbia
SGD.O0O; Ynquina bay. SC0,000, Cms
bay $30 0C0; Ccquille liver $10,001;
Yttinliill i Tver $5000; Tidal nlatiuu ut
A"totia $5000; mouth of Co umbia S7
500; Wagon road fiom Hcottaburjj to
Ft Jvlamath $25,000; footin-up$542,-500
or neatly three times as much ah
the amount obtained by the Demo
cratic Congressman. This is onlv a
part of Mr Gurg-'s work. 'When
ever asked, he has established post
roads and attended to the private bus
iness of the citizens of Oregon in all
the Departments without a cent of ro
numeration and yet in the face of the
ubovc showing little Democratic pa
pers are continually asking "what has
Mr. George done? Publishers that
ask this question ore either stupidly
ignorant or. willfuly dishonest. If
they had read tho jecord they would
have been informed and if they had
been honest they would hive published
the reiult of Mr. George's service for
five moutli3 ns news the people were
cnti.ltd to. We now challenge every
Demociatic paper in Orpgon to have
honesty and deceucy enough to pub
lis.li Mr. George'h vvoik as an item of
news and we epeeialty ask our es
teemed neighbor in Jackxnu county to
post himself on the actual work of our
CongiesMimu and not exhibit himself
to -bin leaders eery week like a great
stupid loot who in ignorant of what in
transpiring in Congiesx. His readers
aie entitled to this news and, now tliut
the Sentinel lias put him in posses
sion of it, will liu publii-h it and quit
asking "What has George done?''

From tlie'summit of the bill over
looking Jacksonville, on thp Appleg&tA
road, a view of Rogue River "Valley
can now be obtained hsX for loveliness
is hard to excel. Beginning, with the
little mountain city-nestled in a-notch,
in the hills, with it bright homes and
spires surrounded by )each and apple
bloom, the vallev stretches northward
and eastward, nocture of vernal beau:
y, dotted w ith comfortab'e homes, that
show the evidence of thrift aud culture.
The monotony of the emerald grain
fields is broken here and there by the
pink and whi'e of blooming orchards
and the oj cuing foliage of the native
groves o oak. Stretching northward
still, the lino of Roguu river, aB it
sweeps from iIip dark gorges .its rapid
current has torn through- the Cascade
range, is marked by a snml r fringe f
pine, farther still the beautiful valley,
beyond the Table mountain breaks on
the eye a i-econd but smaller picture
set in the blue hills surrounding it.
Beyond all tho Diamond Peak, one ot
the highest sentinels of tho wild Cas
cades," pierces the sky like the pinnacle
of an everlasting glacier and speaking
of the solitude of the eternal to the
busy civilization below. Nowhere
have r seen so lovely a-picture, in
ih!ch the eflb.t of th h a landman
is blended with the wild aud rugged
beauty of uaturn and it is one- which
the eye of the tourist or artist may
well linger on long and delightedly.

JUroelont Crime la Ireland.
Dispatchrs of Ma) Ctb to the Chron
icle give an account of a terrible assasx
iuntiou which is summed up briefly as
follows:
Lord Frederick Cavendish, th new
Chief Secretary for Ireland, and Thnni
as Henry Biuke, Under Svcrptary,
were stabbed to death in Phoenix-Park,
Dublin, early last evening; There is
no clue to the assassins, who are re
ported to Vie four m number. Both
men wer ilead when finiud, and tie
siot where they werp sluin was soaked
ilh their blood. None of their alu
ables were touched, which proves that
it was not a mercenary crime. Great
excitement was caused by the new of
the murder, nnd very bitter feeling
whs txpresspd in Loudon, irishmen
in tliiit country tlpplore the outrage and
can assign no reasons for it. The
opinion of the pre-is is that no organi
zt'ion has any connection with the
ciiiie, nut that it is uue to individual
f iimttcivm.
There is no language adequate to
cuidemn the d.vilihh tiirit that
prompts assassination. It is unworthy
the proverbial manliness of the Irih
P'ople and must result in the worst
cniM-quences -to them. They have
d.ppcd the "olive branch," offered
them, iu blood, ami it may take a sra
of blood, to ah it again.

On Monday lost President Arthur
signed the Chinese restriction bill and
the only tivailablo vreayon the Democ
lacy had is rjautifully spiked and quite
useless now. Notwithstanding the per
sistent lying of Democratic editors the
bill is practically the vetoed bill,
changed only in the limit of restriction,
the sections prohibiting naturalization
and defining laborers to mean skilled
nnd unskilled both being retaiued.
This action if Sir. Arthur's ougnl to
be severely denounced by the Democra
cy of Oregon. It has knocked the rud
der from Fentou's craft aud completely
taken tho wind from St: Joseph's sails
and the poor becalmed fleet is slowly
drifting among the breakers hopeless
ly drifting without even a Chinese
queue for a saving cabin. The crew of
the doomed craft are to be pitied for
listening to the Mien that hid under
the veto and lured them to their fate.
InBIrrExtrrBtMr.
Four years since, thn Democracy of
Oregon denounced the candidacy of
II. K.. Hines becausa he was a "preach
er" but more particularly liecause he
was a Republican. Now the Democ
racy havo two' "preachers" on their
ticket a Southern methodift for Gov
erncr a CimplmHite for Congress
and those who threw- mud at "Mr.
Hines all bin hpartily inia prayerful
amen. The nominations ate-most ap
pro rite the Democratic parly being
"in articula mortis" it in fitting that it
should have- the benefit of ebrj:y at the
funeral obsequies in June, and this is
tirobably the reason -that Smith and
tV;ton were sehirted.
The "Times" "doubts" the capability
of Mr. Merritt for tho office of Dtstriu
Attorney. If he vvero on the Demo
cratic ticket he would be a statesman, n
distinguished lawyer, a man of super
lor ability ami every thing clean and
nice; Would he not Charlesl Fortun
ately for Mr. Merritt the opinion of
r' b "Times" is not worth & straw.
