EACIFIU COAST BILLS.
Representative George has intro
duced a bill providing that all lands
hereafter granted to aid in construc
tion of railroads, which shall not be
taken up by building of the roads be
fore the first day of January, 1 885,jshall
bo declared forfeited and open for set
tlement. This in Oregon affects the
Northern Pacific, the Oregon and Cali
fornia and Oregon Central to Astoria.
The bill also contains several impor
tant clauses protecting the rights of
settlers in cases of forfeiture by rail
road companies, and insuring to these
settlers good titles under United States
land laws. George also introduced the
following bills: To create a commission
to report any and all losses by reason
of Indian depredation, a bill for relief
of citizens of Oregon-, "Washington,
Idaho and Montana who were con
nected with the war between the feder
al government and the Nez Perce In
dians, which provides payment for
their services and for all arms or horses
lost, and extends the benefit of the
pension laws to them and their heirs;.
a bill to optn' Umatilla reservation for
settlement, identical" with Senator Sla
ter's measure, appropriates 8,500 to
improve the military wagon road from
Vancouver barracks- to Portland, as
recommended by Gen. Miles; and 150,
000 for. the erection of a custom house
and appraiser's biulding or bonded
warehouse at Portland; to create a new
customs district of Yaquina with New
port as the port of entry, and a bill to
protect settlers on public lands, which
provides that a former failure to per
fect title shall not forfeit the right of
'any one to take up the full amount of
land allowed in the first instance under
homestead'or preemption."
How Printing Affects the Health.
Years ago there was a notion preva
lent among those who were but parti
nllr informed upon the question that
printing business was especially detri
mental to health. There was a tradi
tion about the absorption of poison
from the constituents of which type
metal was composed. This was and is
true so far as it assertsthe poisonous
nature of some of the constituent parts
of type metal; but that these poisons
febould necessarily be absorbed into the
system of the one who bandies type is
simply absurd. Printers who hive
such habits of cleanliness and sobriety
as a decent respect for one's self and
the opinion of others might be expected
to dictate may follow their calling for
years without experiencing any furth
er damaging effects upon their health
, than what will result from close appli
cation to any sort of hard work. More
"poison" is absorbed by the printer
when taking observations of his little
finger through the bottom of a glass
than in any other way. "The Chicago
Specimen."
Fine Ruling One Million Lines
to tdf Inch. M. G. Fasoldt says, in
a letter to the "American Journal of
Microscopy:" I have ruled plates up to
1,000,000 lines to the inch, one of
which was purchased by the U. S.
Government at Washington. Theso
plates show, lines truly and fairly ruled,
as far as lenses are able to resolve, and
above this point the spectral appear
ance of the bands in regular succeeding
colors (when examined as an opaque
object) shows, beyond doubt, that each
band contains fnirlv ruled lines up to
- the 1,000,000 band. I do not believe
I will ever attempt to rule higher than
. 1,000,000 lines to the inch, as from my
practical experience and judgment, I
have concluded that that is the limit of
ruling.
Formation of Ick. Pure water
freezes at 32 degrees Fahr., but if any
compounds be dissolved in the water,
these prevent it freezing at that point
and lower its freezing point. Also wa
ter containing dissolved air or other
gase3 does not freeze till these are first
expelled. By boiling the water cer
tain salts, such as the carbonate of lime,
) are precipitated and the gases expelled,
tlius leaving the water to freeze at a
higher temperature than before, and
at a quicker rate. The ice produced is
harder, because it is free from air bub
bles. These are produced in the rapid
freezing of unboiled 'water thus: The
upper surface of the water being frozen,
the lower surface commences then to
freeze, but before doinc so it begins to
part with its contained air. This air
js prevented from rising to the surface
Tiy the film of ice already formed, hence
it remains below in small bubbles, and
ice forms around it. Such ice is of
course more brittle than that which is
free from these bubbles of air.
