It is a startling fact but the rea son is obvious. Parents in the city are vigilant and watchful, knowing that their children are surrounded by vice; while in the country they are lax in their discipline and unsuspicious of evil because they do not see it The re sult is; that children of tender ago are unrestrained in their associations, per mitted to koep evil companv and un seasonable hours. Indulgence grows into license, falsehood and deceit cover np that which the mother must not Enow and her own affection blinds her rJgirceslHaioTfgnt orxht Mothers never pause to think evil of any but their neighbor's children, nor do they seem to understand that the harvest will be exactly like the seeding whatever it may be. "We hear of Christian mothers, themselves far above a thought of evil, who permit daugh ters, not yet fourteen, to roam the streets, at unseemly hours, with boys Lof vicious habits, and how can they w what evil seed is being sown in their niiuds. Mothers must learn that blind confidence in the purity of their own children is stupid folly and that any lack of proper restraint and watchfulness is criminal negligence. It is unfair to fay that all children are bad, or that a lily may not grow up in a field of noxious weeds; but such growth is exceptional and; as wc are all large- the creatures of education, parents selves are mainly responsible for icter of their children, and the Pjust about what they make it. Delegate Brents of Wash ington Territory, and George C. Gor ham. -The entertainment was in every sense a perfect success. The uninitiated understands little of the ways and means by which political objects are accomplished and would place little significance in the above an nouncement. There is much in it though. It means that as Oregon's representative, Mr. George is to have the friendship and assistance of ex-Senator Mitchell, the advantage of all his valuable experience and the friendship of Mr. Page, chairman of the committei of commerce, and that of his fell guests. Ho is unpopular in California but popularity has nothing to do with a man's fitness for office and, generally, he who does his duty best is least popular. Atr. Nines men-have bceto lynched in that state. within a month Tho Plaindealer says: As James Laird, Jr., was coming over the Coos Bay trail last week hs met a band of about three hundred elk traveling north. The Postmasters complain of the loss of revenue under tho present sys tem of partial prepayment of postage on first-class matter, and the abolition of the practice is being agitated. New York, December 24. Tho bonded warehouse Nos. 71 to 74 South street, stored with silks, tobacco and spirits, was burned this evening. Loss, 500,000. Well insured. Several ex plosions occurred. New York, December 25 2:30 a.m. The fire on South street is now be lieved to bo under control. Six build- igs have beon destroyed, and the loss is estimated at nearly $2,000,000.
