It is definitely settled that a largo
quantity of wheat and flour will be ex.
ported from California during tha com
ing year by the Southern Pacific Eail-
road to New Oncans or Qalveston, and
thence per sailer or steamer to Europe.
How far this new routo for csrr als will
interfere with the present ocean carry
ing trade via Cape Horn in tho future
can be only a matter for conjecture,.
I but. that it will not do so to any appro-
ciable extent during the coming scan
1 1 son is considered reasonably certain.!
It is .- l probable that the stimulus!
given to the production of cereals or
tliis coast by the opening of the nev
route will in itself lead to an increased
trade, equal to the entire carrying cap-1
acity ot the railroad, iiuu the new
line been in operation last season when
our farmers had to store three fourth
of their crop, and to carry nearly ond
half of tho surplus into another 4
year, it could have partially relieved
California of her extraordinary redun
dacy. Eut in that case the acreage
and the surplus this season, which were
greatly reduced because of the absence
of full transportation facilities, would
have become great enough to give suf
ficient employment to both ships and
railroads. From all indications some
such result will occur next season,
the farmers of California, Oregon.
Washington are seeding a raucL
area than ever before, and i
trcmely favorable weather, have the
promise so far, of even a greater sur-l
plus than that of 1880. Every new-
railroad route, by supplying increased
facilities for export, gives the farmer
increased opportunities for production
and should, in the end, increase
snipping ot the coast. Urec
Washington may bo expecto
as large a wheat surplus
as California had up tc
few years, when tl

The two all-important re

therefore, while it will ga
the farmer, is not likely to injure the
ship-owner, nnd it cannot fai1 to build
up a wheat and shipping commission
business in San Francisco that must
prove highly favorable to both. Tho
great benefit arising from an open
freight market is that it places the en
tire wheat crop of this coast subject to
the competition of English and conti
nental buyers through their represent
atives in San Francisco and Portland,
and in New Orleans or Galveston as
soon as California has a shipping port
at the Gulf. "S. F. Chronicle."
Glycerine. It is from tho candlo
factories that the enormous supply of
glycerine comes, which "is new a very
important article of trade. A few
yeaw ago it wa3 wasted; now it is sent
to the manufacturing chemist, who pur
ifies it by distillation and filtration
through bone charcoal, and puts it up
on the market. It is put toa, great
variety of uses, many of which de
upon its peculiar properties of nonvol;
tility and absorption by atmospheric
moisture. Harness makers and leath
er workers use it in making leather
pliable; it is put into t;as meters beV
cause it does ot frezo excep'c tft a very
low tempCttiaire; modelers keep their
clay (Studies moist with it; tobacconists
swe4ten chewing tobaco with it, and
la,Jie3 apply it to their hands and faces
to soften the skin. Much of it goes
into the manufacture of the terrible ex

by treating it with a mixture of sul
phuric and nitric acid, or concentrated
nitric acid. Not less than 3,200,000
