EIGHT OF THE JIABC "OBECPK' "Various conjectures havo found their way into print as to the origin of the word "Oregon." The venerable Arch bishop, Most Rev. F. N. Blanchct, has pveu this .subject a great deal of inter esting investigation, and he gives the best theory of the etymology of this same so far. In the year 1857 His Grace visited La Paz, Bolivia, -where he met the learned Dr Geo. Haygart, A. M. of London, a gentleman well versed In the Spanish language. In MgiBof the word ""Oregon fcntkman informed the Arch- f that it had its origin in the My word "Oreja" ("Oreille" in Ih) and "ear" in English; hence Ion" big ear. It is probable he Spaniards who first discovered -visited the country, when they be cars of the natives enlarged by i ef huge ornaments, were nstur- acall them "Oregon" big at the characteristic word to this peculiarity of the used to denote tho coun- habited. It is probable al- sons ignoring the peculiar the Spanish "j" changed English "g", in order to bn. llns theory is turtner Id by the fact that the name rerf ul and famous Nez Ferces dians, means "Nose-Pierced," name was given because they figs in their noses. JLno words Irces" are French as are also ?lates," meaning "Flat Heads," enow designation of large bodies fans of the North-west, so named so barbarous custom of flattening aearis of infants from their birth. ft the Spaniards visited the country Srth of Oregon, is a historical fact, Ind evidence of their intercourse with tho Indians is well authenticated. You want to Know, do you, my son, why it is that, with all'your manage ment, you can't live on your salarv and are always in- debt at the end of the year?' "Well, I'll tell you;Telemachus, why it is, and it won't cost you a dol lar for the information. It's because you're trying to Have a SWOO'time on & $900 salary, and it can't be did. Older men than yon have tried it and failed right along. A $600 boarding house and a $300 livery stable just ex actly cuts the last coupon off your sal ary, and tHex liow tile man who makes your clothes expect to get anything out of you is more than you can tell him. Yours is a very simple case, my dear, and you can apply the remedies your self and perform the necessary opera tion without the presence of a consult ing surgeon. "Will it hurt?" My poor boy, you can bet your last bottom-dollar that it will hurt, It will make you equirm a thousand times a day until you-get out of debt, and then you will feel as though you were in Paradise. Begin treatment at once; tho longer you wait the worse your case "will be and the more you'll dread it. "Burling ton Hawkeye. The old adage "The best is always the cheapest" will apply to no article with greater force than to Seeds. Noth ing is quite so worthless as poor Seeds. D. M. Ferry & Co. of Detroit, Mich.. seem to be one of the very few firms engaged in the Seed business who have fully realized the importance ofputtinrj up and selling only the freshest and best of all varieties of Seeds, and as a legitimate result their brand of Seeds has become exceedingly popular all ov er the land. We take pleasure in re ferring to their advertisement in our columns, and would advise all our readers who will be likely to require seeds to send and obtain their beauti ful catalogue, giving prices, instructions for planting, etc. The "Rural Press" says: A few miles west of Las Vegas, N. M. is a buried forcBt The trees are petrified and crys tallized into solid stone. The bark, grain and knots ef the trees arehown. The trees can be taken out almost perfect and make fine lawn ornaments. The Clackamas paper mills, near Oregon CiVy, employ about 25 men and turn out about 1,000,000 pounds of paper annually.
