They aro better grammarians; for, having become so familiar with every variety of style in the newspapers, from the.common-place advertisement to tho finished classical oration of the states man, they more readily comprehend the meaning of the text, and conse quently analyze its construction with more accuracy. 5. They write better compositions, using better languige, containing mora thoughts, more clearly and more con nectedly expressed. G Those young men who have for years been readers of newspapers, al ways taking tho lead in the debating societies, exhibiting a more extensira knowledge upon a greater variety of subjects and expressing their views with greater fluency, clearness and correctness. "The Archangel." Sea-Weed Sea-Serpents. In a let ter to thn "Madras' Afoll " nn tt, of gigantic sea-.foed as a protective agent for shores Cant. J. H. Taylor. tho Master-Supferintendcnt of Madras, gives the following interesting "sea serpent" story "A notable incident connected wiAh this sea-weed is re- caHcd to mjr recollejjjjjby J)nFur- nells letter. About 15 years ago, while I was in my ship at anchor in Table bay, an enormous monster as it appeared, was seen drifting or advanc ing itself round Green point into the harbor. It was more than 100 feet in length, and moved with an undulating snake-like motion. Its head was crowned with what appoared to bo long hair, and the keensighted among tho affrighted obserrers declared they could see its eyes and distinguish its features. The military was called ot, and a brisk fire poured into it at a dis tanco of about 500 yards. It was hit several times, and portions of it knocked off. So serious were its evi dent injuries that on its rounding the point it became quito still, and boata went off to cxamipo it and complete its destruction. It was found to be a specimen of the sea-weed abovo men tioned, and its stillness after the griev ous injuries inflicted was due to its having left the ground swell and en tered the quiet waters of tho bay." One roulble Good. One possible good may come out of tho trial of Guiteau. It may disgust the Americans people with the plea of insanity to such an extent that they will not be satisfied until the laws have been so reformed as to deprive mur derers of that means of evasion. The spectacle of t murderer defending him self, and doing his-ext by argument to establish his oirn insanity, has never been given to the world before. It is of course a complete burlesquo ef tl.a plea and all that the plea embodies. It is 89 absurd that its admission ta a court of justice almost justifies the sus picion that insanity has crept into our criminal practice. The confusion in which this whole question has been en folded bv the unscientific nnsitinn of lawyers ignorant of psychology of raen- lai painoiogy, nas nere reached a cli max. "Sacramento Record Union." A Curiods Fact. Dr. Lewis Batch, of Albany, in a review of the medical evidence in the celebrated Billings murder case, alludes to the curious fact that a ball of a given calibre fired through glass may make a hole enough smaller than the full size of the ball be fore firing to prevent an unfired ball ef like calibre passing. Dr. BalcL notes having seen "a base ball, thrown with great force and having a rotary twist, make a round hole through an ordinary window light, and when tho ball was tried to be again passed through the same opening the hole was nearly one third too small."
