Drinking at Bars. The social
habit of drinking at bars, where each
member of a party, having been "treat
ed" by another, considers it necessary
to treat every other member, has at
last attracted the attention of the
law-makers.. The Iowa Legislature
has a bill'beforo-it to abolish the cus
tom, and make-it a punishable offense;
and, although such a proposition can
never become a law, it is significant as
showing public dislike of a custom
which no drinking man wants to be
the first to disregard. The habit of
standing treat is the cause of more
physical and mental discomfort than
every other convivial custom combined.
A respectable man who feels the need
of a.glass of wine or spirits and there
are hundreds of thousands of such men,
ini spite of all that the temperance peo
ple say to the contrary approaches a
bar and finds, perhaps, several acquain
tances who are drinking and invite
him. to join them. When he has done
no; and drank all he came for, his spirit
of independence prompts him to return
the invitation, which is accepted by the
ethers, because it would seem discourt
eous to refuse; then those who have
been treated make haste to return the
compliment for fear of seeming mean,
and the end is that four or five men,
each of whom came for a single glass
of liquor, retire with several times as
much as tbejr needad or wanted. Bos

Dread of Death. Age, that les
sens our enjoyment of life, increases
our desire for living. Thoso dangers
which, in the vigor of youth, we had
learned to despise, assume new ter
rors as we grow old. Our caution in
creasing as our years increase, fear at
last becomes the prevailing passion of
the mind, and the waall remainder of
life is taken ap in aoeJesj pfforts to
keep off our end, or provide for a con
tinued existence. Whence, then, is
this increased lo7e of life which grows
upon us as with our years, Whence
comes it that we bliould make greater
efforts to preserve our existence at a
time when it becomes scarce worth the
keeping? It is that Nature, attractive
to the preservation of mankind, in
creases our wish to live, while she
lessens our enjoyment, and, as she robs
thesenb.es of every pleasure; equips
imagination in the spoil. Life would
be insupportable to the old man who,
loaded with infirmities, feared death
no more than when in the vigor of
manhood; the numberless calamities
of decaying nature, and the conscious
ness of surviving every pleasure, would
at once induce him with his own hand
to terminate the scene of misery; but
happily the contempt of death forsakes
him at a time when it could only be
prejudicial, and life acquires an imagi
nary value in proportion as its real
value is no more, Goldsmith.
One of the famous diners at Del
monico's was the "grand swan" dinner.
A lake was built upon the center of
the table, in which five live swans
swam. The desert was served in
swan's eggs shells, cut out of marble.
The table was a bed of roses.
