Does Farming PayI Lyman Chap pell, who has leased the fine farm of John Miller, on Applegatp, has just threshed 7,400 pounds of alfalfa seed, worth 1,480 00, from 14 acres of alfalfa. From the same piece of Innii 22 tons of hay were .sold at 7 per ton making the gross yield S1.G34, or over $116 per acre. Mr. Chappell's report appears to answer the question. A. O. U. W. Ball. The ball given by Banner Lodge at Holt's hall on Thanksgiving night was one of the finest affairs of this kind ever held in Jacksonville. Quite allium ber from Ashland and other places wpre present and all who attended seemed to enjoy themselves. Homeward Bound. Last Tuesday II. Si Surveyor General Tolman passed through town not th ward bound, accom panied by Mrs. Tolumn, for his home in Portland. He had been on a short visit to his farm above Ashland and will haidly vi,jt us again until he can como by rail. He leaves hit) ranch in charge of his nephew and leaves his youngest daughters, llaltieand Ida, at the old home as the climate of Port land is too severe cm them. Forgot Herself. A good one was related to us u few days ago about a maiden from the country, who, on her firt visit to this city, thought it necessa sary to imitate city style. "Relating an incident of the day that hud excited merriment she said "it was just two funny for any thing; and I lauded and lauded and, in fact, I nearly died a lauiti. J he damsel forgot herself and forgetting her metropolitan surround ings "laffed" just as a country girl or other natural person should. The Right Thing. On Wednesday evening a number of the piominenl ladies of the Presliyleiian Chuich went quietly to the Methodist parsonage conveying with them a large supj.lv of 'the necessaties of fn for Rev. Mr. Sharp and family. It was a real sur prise, one that gave pleasure alike to tho donors and the recipients, and handsomely doife. This is the right kind of Christianity and if proplu would confine their kindnesses less to sectarian ruts the world would be bet tr for it. This County Represented. Among the very creditable home pro Auctions in tho art gallery of the .Mechanics Fair, at Portland, were four ntingR by the brush of Miss ianmi Tolman," daughter of "Judge -Tolman of tills county. Three were portraits, showing genuine talent, fidel ity of expression and delicate shading. The fourth was a pretty landscape in "which the perspective was excellent and the light and shadow softly true to nature. The young lady deserved!) received a handsome diploma and we expect to liear of still greater success for her as Her talent is joined with ambitious industry. Another Grand Jury has been found to condemn the Court House, as "in sufficient for the business of Jackson county." That body might have add d,that it was a disgrace to any county and a shaky advertisement of our pov erty or lack of public spirit, and told the truth. The press of Jacksonville was once taunted as being afraid to "cheep" on the court house question, out it may as well be understood that this paper is not afraid to speak plain ly on any question that concerns the public whether its views are popular or not There are stables and barns in this state more creditablo in appear ance than the Court House of Jackson county, and our County Court should .build & suitable one, asa matter of pub lic duty, without reference to the polit ical affect en their own interests. TJIrich has been appointed ex ecutor of the estate cf Peter Barneburg, N. Fisher, Reames Bros., Drum and J. S. Howard received new goods this week. Following is the bv the Grand Jurv; repoit just made "We, the Grand Jury, have, is by law directed, examined the Cuntv Clerk's office and fitid the records there of plain, legible and well kept. The jail answer! all of the requirements. For the transaction of tltp bu-iness of Jackson county, the Court House is insufficient, and we therefore recoin mend that the authorities make the necessary improvements, so that the county can have better facilities than it now has for the proper irpnactinn of its business. The vault in the Clerk's office, has heretofore answered all requirements, but will not be suf ficient in the near future to hold the continually increasing amount of books and paper-. We found valuable coun ty papers in a room adjoining the vault that had to be removed for want of spice in the vault. These pavers should be kept in a place secure from fire. We. also find the Sheriffs office is well kept, but it has not the capacity for the transaction of all the Sheriff's business. Judge Under hill left Stiawbcrry on Thursday morn ing with one of Sisson's siages, driven by T. E.
