Mr. and lira. Franklin Rix, of Franklin township, Polk county, Iowa. One is four years old and the other two. While they are compelled to wear goggles because they cannot bear the sunlight, they can 6ee in the dark even letter than in the day time, being able to pick up a pin on the darkest nighc A Hartford (Conn.), paper relates a singular circumstance connected with the eyes of a young lady 16 years old, residing in Litchfield. She was re cently confined for a few days in a dark room on account of her eyes, un til one dayr after a sudden and pecu liar sensation,, they felt decidedly bet ter and bbe was taken into the light. When she entered the dark room her eyes were straight and natural; she was now cross-eyed; but the most sin gular thing is the asserted fact that when she closes the right eye she can see to a distance of eight or ten miles with the left eye, and distinguish ob jects as though they were within the ordinary range of vision. The distant hills appear to be brought closer as if by a telescope. On the other hand, when she closes the left and uses the right eye for vibion it appears to be a microscope. Iho point of a needle looks like a blunt piece of iron, and so witL everything sear by. But when both eyes are open they assume the cross-eyed expression and she sees everything natural as other persons see. The report is that the girl is to be taken to New York for medical ex amination. Ex Senator Allen G. Thuaman, of Ohio, returned yesterday from. Paris, where-he attended the recent Monetary Conference. In conversation with a reporter last night, he said that he was well satisfied with the results of the conference. The primary object nn agreement by all nations to estab lish the relative values of gold and sil ver was not attained, but so great an undertaking conld not be accomplished in a day. In course of time, he said, he had no doubt that the United States view of the subject would be adopted by European nations, includ ing England, which suffers most by the present system, and which is daily coming to see her mistake. It was claimed by some that variations in the relative amounts of gold and silver produced would effect their relative values in spite of the agreement, but the arguments were against those hold ing that view. N. Y. Tribune, Oct 11th. An up town dentist advertises a new method of extracting teeth, "without the aid of chloroform or laughing gas." When a patient calls upon him for treatment he places him in a chair and makes a fixture of him with straps and bands. Then he puts the forceps to the bad tooth and gives a terrible jerk inward that makes him see a million or two of stars. "That," he says, "is the way Dr. Suiiih does it." He gives it another yank in the opposite direc tion, remarking: "And that is the way Dr. Jones goes to work." By this time the tooth is quite loose. With a gentle pull he forces it out, say ing: But this is the way that I da Send your friends to me and 111 con vince them of the superiority of my method. One of the chief hinderance to tele graphing in Japan is the grounding of the currently spider lines. The trees bordering the highways swarm with spiders, which spin their webs every where between the earth, -vires, posts, insulators, and trees. When the spi der webs are covered with heavy dews they become good conductors and run the messages to earth. The only way to remove the difficulty is by employing men to sweep the wires with brushes of bamboo; but as the spiders are more numerous and persistent -than the brush users, the difficulty remains al ways a serious one. It is understood that Senator Miller has prepared a bill providing for a sim ple fonn of government for Alaska, which meets the approbation of all the prominent men interested in the Terri tory. It simply provides for a court having general jurisdiction, for an ex ecutive officer and for a delegate in Congress.
