THE CCTICl'RA KEUBD1CS. Rome Facts Regarding TtimTTho Halcea Tlicm nuil wlint 1 (nought of tnem by the Drue Trndelutcrvlew of sk Times Reporter wlUi 1'eter Van sehaack, Lsq. From the Chicago Times. To enable tbe Times to furnish its readers with some reliablo information regarding the Cuticura remedies, which aro now attracting so much public at tention, a reporter called yesterday upon Mr. Peter of Van Sehaack, Steven wholesale, and retail dru and Dearborn strc facts were elic, R. Will j the Times by Mr. Van S. -CertainT R. Do they sell welll 3Ir. Van S. The sale of the Cuti cura, Cuticura Resolvent, and Cuticur Soap have been unprecedented. R. What reasons do yon give for. so large a sale! Mr. Van S. I give four reason. First, they are original and revolution ary in their composition and mode of treatment. Second, they undoubtedly possess great curatives properties. Third, there are thousands upon thous ands of sick and suffering who hara tried and found wanting the usual remedies and modes of treatment, and who are ready to welcome a really great and successful medicine. Fourth, the price of them is within the reach of every invalid. R. Are your large sales of these medicines through agents? Mr. Van S. No; they are legiti mate mail orders. We employ np travelers on the road are fundament ally opposed to that way of selling goods the retailer has to stand such expenses, and such staple goods as these require no one to force them off. R. Do you class them as patent medicines? Mr. Van S. I do not. They aro proprietary only so far as their names are concerned, these being held as trade-marks. R Can you tell us something about this firm? Mr. Van S. Week & Potter are importers, wholesale druggists and chemists, and for twenty-five years have been the foremost house in the trade in New England. R. It is popularly supposad that advertising will sell most anything, ro gardless of merit Is it true? Mr. Van S. No. A remedy false ly claiming to possess virtues of which it is in fact destitute, will surely fail. No reputablo firm and druggists arn the most competent judges would think of risking fame and fortune on any medicine unless it had, under the most trying circumstances, proved itself to possess extraordinary medi cinal -value. Tho expense attending the introduction of such remedies is enormous. A fortune must bo spent before any return can be expected. If, after a wide distribution, they are found to possess the virtues claimed for them, those who have been cured will recommend them one to another, and .thus make them remunerative. When a man backs his statements with his own money, you may generally rely upon them. This Weeks it Potter are doing. R. Have they ever before prepared medicines for popular use? Mr. Van S. I believe not. They are, like ourselves, agents for a great many, but we think these are the first that they prepared themselves. It is but once in a lifetime that a discovery is made of a remedy that Ruch a firm as Weeks & Potter aro willing tostako reputation and fortuno on. R. Are their prospects flattering, or otherwise? Mr. Van S. Very flattering. As I said before, the remedies undoubtedly possess great merit. Andbesides, they treat blood and skin diseases according to a new and thoroughly rational plan, that must take a firm hold on the confidence of those who suffer from chronic diseases of the blood, skin and scj the Naval Observatory at Washing. ton, believes that the tails of comets are electric light. "If these tails had any substance," ho argues, "tho laws of motion are constantly violated by them. The great comet of 1843 went so near the sun that it passed from one fide to the other in a few hours. Its immense tail, 100,000,000 miles long, was shifted completely, so that it pointed directly in an opposite direc tion. Could that be so if it was com posed of any substance? Could a com et swing 100,000,000 miles of tail around as quick as that? The electric ity is getierated by evaporation. As the comets approach tho sun the heat becomes more intense, the evaporation and accumulation of electricity more rapid, the repulsive force greater and the tail longer. Sometimes the ma terial becomes completely evaporated. Then the comet has no tail."
