F., held in their Hall, March C, 1S81, the fol lowing resolutions in remembrance of Jacob lib. were unanimously adopted. Whereas; It has please! God, in the wisdom that passe th all human un derstanding, to remove from his earth ly affiliations, our worthy and bo loved "brother, Jacob Ish, while yet in the noou day of his usefulness; there fore, be it , Resolved; 'That- w;hile"', bowing with sad submission to the Diyine will, we feel keenly the loss of a brother whose every action- sprung from a broad and liberal charity, and whoe every-day affiliation with his fellow man proved that the golden chain of friendship and truth by which he was bound to us was interwoven with his heart strings, making him the type of a true and worthy Odd Fellow. Resolved; Tlint in tho death of Brother Ish, Jacksonville Lodge has lost a member hoxe wise counsel and unswerving ffdelity to the principles of our order had endeared him to nil men and who leaves behind him a pure and spotless character, both ns a citizen and Odd Fellow, that can never fade away. Resolved; Tbat the tender sympa thy of this Lodge be extended to the sorrowing family of our deceased broth er, with the hope that He, who poured oil upon the waters, and can alonp still the wild and troubled bpatings of human hearts will soften their heavy affliction and assuag their poignant grief in his own good time, and that when tho hart est is gathered, the worthy brother and loving husband and father will bo found among the golden sheaves Resolved; That in memory of our departed brother the charter of this Lodge bo draped in mourning, the members .wi ar the usual badge of fmouFrS,.1SU' .7V"S".'W SaifdithatJSl'cJpv of these resolutions CCTtiuwH battle teal of the Lodge be given lo the family of the deceased. Senator Mat Carpenter, one of the Repub'ican side in the U. S. Senate, died on Thursday evening, having been in very poor health all winter. He was born in Vermont in 1S24, en tered the Military Academy at West Point in 1S43, and remained there two years; studied law with ltufus Choatc, and was admitted to the bar; removed to Wisconsin inlS4S, where he entered upon tho practice of his profession; was elected to the U. S. Senate to succeed Jas. R. Doolittlp, serving from March 4th. I860 to March. 3d. 1875. and was again elected to succeed Timo thy 0. Howe in 1879, his term to ex pire in 1885, if he lived. Fresh Air. Live out of doors as much as you can. It is tho place for a man to be. It is good for the health. A distinguished physician was in the habit of spying: "However bad the air may bex Ait of doors it is always worse in the house." It is good for the temper. People who are always shut up in the house aro apt to grow fretful nnd peevish. They are prone to acquire narrow views of things, and to worry over trials not worth consid ering. It is good for the whole char acter for strength, hope, patience 'and fortitude. It expands and softens one's nature and makes us more charitable. Few brighter and quieker replies have ever been made than that of the resident of Louisiana who was talking with a "visiting statesman" four years ago. The latter was pndeavoring to establish the respectability of the mem bers of the famed Returning Board. "Now take that man" said he. "He is surely a respectable man. Is ho not a planterr "Well," replied the person addressed, "you may call him a planter, but the things he plant's don't come up. He's an undertaker.1' "How old is your book-keeper, M Tarantretl" asked the customer. And the old man icily replied that ho be lieved Mr. Figgers was somewhere in his adage. And after a solemn pause the customer got up and said he had some election bets to look after. Whereas, it has pleased the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, in his divine wisdom, to remove from our midst our beloved Sister Katie Jones by the hands of death and, Whereas, she being taken from our circle, to that land of eternal bliss, we feel greatly the loss of our beloved sister and shall miss her cheerful pres ence arid her willing help to the cause that was so dear to her; we sincerely regret that she has been called from our circle of Champions of Honor, therefore be it Resolved; That in the death of Sis ter Katie Jones this Order has lost a member who was ever honest, the ad vocate of right, the enemy of every thing that was wrong, a Champion thoroughly imbued with the principles of our beloved Order Temperance, Fidelity, Unity, Justice and Mercy. Her example should not he lost on us, although she has passed away from our sight, the recollection of her devotion to duty, her love for Championship, her steadfast and inflexible purpose and dpsire to promote the success nnd ad vancement of our noble order, should linger long with us. Resolved; That we extend to the sorrow afflicted family of our deceased sister our profound sympathies in this the hour of their sad bereavement, nnd while trusting that the Supreme Ruler, who has seen fit to remove from our circle our beloved sistpr, will soothe and cherish them, and hold their lives securely in His merciful hands; let us not forget that we owe them tho sacred duty of care and protection. The "Mississippi" now lies at the dock of the Morgan Iron Works, at tho foot of East Ninth street. This vessel was built at Dum barton, Scotland, in 1862, to run the blockade of Southern ports. While endeavoring to pass into the port of Charleston the "Mississippi was cap tured by the United States steamer "Magnolia." She was condemned as a prize and sold to the Navy Depart ment for $500,000. A book agent, who had retired from active labor upon the hard-earned ac cumulations of a life of industrious cheek, says that tho great secret of his success was, that when hd went to a house where the female head presented herself, he always opened by saying, "I beg your pardon, Miss, but it was your mother I wanted to see. That always used to get 'em. They not only subscribed for my books themselves, but told mo where I could find more customers." A Great I'mlrrtaLlnjC. The project for tunneling the British channel .so long talked of at intervals, has at last been actually undertaken. Preliminary excavations have bean made on both cides the straits, and the engineers of each nationality speak hopefully of the ultimate success of thp scheme. Tho vital question is, first, whether the gray chalk stratum on the English hide is impervious to water; and second in case it is pervious, how far it tuns toward tho French sidel At present the prevailing opinion seems to be that water cannot pene trate the chalk. Should the tunnel be completed, and railway communication bo established between England and France, a great impetus would be imparted to international transit. S. F. Chronicle. Fifty millions of human beings in a land like America more than match the 86, 000,000 of European and Asiatic Rus sia. The 425,000,000 of China aro not to be compared with tlmm as a force among mankind. The growth of a population may generally be under stood to imply the growth of wealth and resources. As each census ii a European State indicates a numerical advance, it may for the most part bo inferred that fresh means of support havo been made available. When, however, every successive census in tho United States reveals nn expansion by bounds and leap, faith in tho instinct of human nature not to multiply, beyond tho power of existence is scarce ly needed to rc-assUfe anxiety.
