ie politicians are harping upon the fac
that the Republican nominee for Vic
President was removed from olBco bv
President Hayes and the impression
is sought to be conveyed that the. re
moval was on account ofthe corrupt
administration of his office. This is av
unfair anil ungenerous as it is untrue.
Mr. Arthur was removed simply and
nolely because he emphatically refused
to obey President Hayes's celebrated
civil service Order No. 1, which for
badeanv officer of the government from
taking part hi tolitics. Mr. Arthui
took the position that he had a per
feet right to engage in politic, so lon
as he did not thereby neglect the prop
er discharge, of the duties of his officf.
The President, just at that time, was
riding his civil service hobb, am'
wnen Mr. Arthur refused to obey lii
order; he removed him. Mr. Cornell,
the present Governor of New York,
was removed from offir-e af the same
time And for the samo reason; yel.
when he was a candidate for Oovernoi
last year, the President wrote a Iett
urging Republicans to support him
There was no charge of corruptioi
against either Cornell or Arthur, am'
the President now supports Arthur for
Vice President.
The ''Christian Standard," published
at Cincinnati, has the following in re
gard to Gen. Garfield:
"On account, we presume, of our
known long acquaintance with the can
didate of the Republican party for the
Presidency, and the personal friend
ship existing between us, we are al

Ours i not a political paper, and we
have nothing to say, in these columns,
touching the party issues between Re
publicans and Democrats. But as
touching the character of James A.
Garfield as an honest man, a.C'hristiai
gentleman, an upright, loyal and faith
ful citizen, and a statesman of great
ability, of high integrity, and of pure
morals, we are. free to say, as the re
suit of a long and iutinia'e personal
acquaintance, that we have in him, and
have always had, unbounded conli
deuce a confidence that never trem
bled for a moment. In a letter receiv
ed'from Bro. F. D. Power, for mam
years our preacher in Washington, and
who has occasion to know him well, he
says of General Gartie d. 'He is a
good, pure man, and we love him.
Let this suffice. Wo hope the Demo
crats will give us a candidate equal
able and worthy, and that' the cam
paign will be conducted with refer
ence to principles rather than persons,
and be five from personal warfare."
'TnE Celebration. The anniversary
of IndeM-iidetice Day occurring thic
year on Sunday, the occasion was cele
brated in Jacksonville on Monday th
5th of July. The selection of tin
ground, preparing programme and ar
ranging the detail of the celebration,
devolved upon the members of the
Aureliau Literarv Society, who did
everything in their power to make i
a success. At an early hour people
could be seen streaming into town from
every direction and by eleven o'clock
not less than a thousand had assent
bled at Beekuian and Linn's paik. The
dav was excessively hot. the thermo
meter ranging from 96 to 102 deg. ii
the shade. The deep dust in the rraitl
leadiii7 from own to the Park, made
going and coming disagreeable ia the
extreme. Tim constant movement ol
-vehicles, teams and horsemen over the
mellow ground leading to the .Turk
made this state of things unavoidable.
The Park itself proved to be a very
hot place, the many booths on one side
and underbrush on this other cnrctuaiiy
keeping out the ventilation. The lit
erary exercises of the dav were carried
out according to published programme
and were in .har"e of Mantual Urosby.
The oration by Mr. Autenrieth and the
soul-sterring music by the Jacksonville
Brass Band were the main features of
the dav loth were cood, and were
listened to by a delighted and enthusi
astic audience. Barring the great heat
and the dust, elements over which the
committee of arrangement had no con
trol the day passed off pleasantly and
without acident. The heroic deeds of
the revolutionary fathers and the bril
liant achievements of the nation under
the flag of our common country, seem
ed to kindle a new spirit of patriotism
in the hearts of the people of Jackson
county,

Fire. Last Monday about four
o'clock p. m., while the family was ab--ent
from home, the residence of Jos.
Faith, who lives on the Desert, caught
rire and was burned to the .round

f Ashhind. Thecause of the fire is
unknown.
Judicial Terms. The newly elected
Supteme Judges met at Salem last
Pui-Kday and were sworn in. In draw
ing for the eng h of time each Judge

Drowned. A private letter receiv
ed from LinKville states that Oeorge
Gilbert, a stock man of Little Shasta.
was drowned on the third inst. while
crossing Lost River. It beems that he
vas fording the strpum and when about
in the middle his horse, became unrul.v
and threw him off. His lody was re
covered on the following day and an
inquest held.

Resigned. Appointed. Deputy

will give general satisfaction. Mr.
Seybert has held the office of DepuU
hit Ihe past four years during two
administrations and during that time
has proved himself an hones, efficient
aid painstaking offer, and he will be

with that office.

The census just taken shows Jackson
count' to have a total population of
H00G. or an increase since 1870 of
3,415 s'ouk In 1870. when Lake
county formed part of Jackson, the
population of tho undivided count
was 4,778. Hi this count were included

shows to have decreased fully one-hatf

J. S. Howard, the engineer in
eharge of the survey of the Crescent
City wagon road, returned from Cres
cent City on last night's stage. The
woik of surveying has been completed
and Mr. Howard reports on easy gradf
passable for the- entire route. He es
timatfs the cost of construction at
340,000, and has the assurance of
Crescent City and San Francisco capi
talists that they will make good the
amount required besides that already
subscribed. Onlv aliout two months
will be required in the cegttruction of
the road.

elected at the last county election took
their resjiective positions on Monday
last. With the eyceptiou of the Cir
cuit Judge, County Judge, Sheriff and
