In tho Archdiocese of Oregon there, are 25 priests, 2 1 churches and chapels 71 sisters, 9 academies for girls, 6 parochial schools for boys, 1 female orphan asylum and 1 hospital. Judge Day and tho "poor house" contractor declare that the contract has been "kept to tho very loiter." If this is true two or thrco Grand Juries ought to bo indicted for perjury. The order of P. M. Genl. Key in ducing service on "Star" routes has forced tho introduction of a bill in Congress making an appropriation for the deficiency. It will no doubt pass and present stoppage of our mails. Tom Kahler is still running the Ft. Lane diggings with a light head of watnr. Last week he picked up a nug get worth 17 and several small pieces from S3 to 56 picked up this week. " Kcaton, Klippol & Co. on Poortnans are evidently on tho "lead" as Tom Keaton picked up a two ounce nugget on Saturday last. They have ample water and very excellent prospects for a big strike. A correspondent of the "Times" (the poor house contractor) thinks tho edi tor of this paper a "scrub." If the Grand Jury is entitled to any credit; the correspondent might pioperly bo called anti-scrub; on account of his deadly antipathy to soap and water. An incendiary attempted to burn a schoorihouso at" 'lmU'no, Wasbmgt countv. last week. This is the first fruit of the aeod being sown by the. "Oregonian." The superintendent of tho Sulphur Bank Quicksilver Mining Company, of J Lako county, of which liburcio Par rott is president, this week discharged all tho chinamen employed by it. The case testing the constitutionality of the act of the Legislature will, it is under stood, be pushed on to a decision. It is a little singular that whenever the Sentinel unearths any official cor ruption the cry of "politics, politics" is raised as a blind. This is too thin; and when it is remarked that wo ex pose Judge Day's littlo contract in order to defpat him; it must bo con cluded that the "ring have again b lected him for another office. An item in the "Times" is to the effect that "State patients" aro usually sick and need close nttention, therefore should pay moro. Patients at 21 per week aro worth nursing, and strange to say, not a single one has died during the last two years, while tho inter ments of those at S5 per week have been quite numerous. Is it because the latter aro unprofitable or do not "get close attentioul" Garrett, tho Waldo mail carrier, has been gathering stock items for ns. .He savs that if he asks how stock is doing, tho reply is "O! mine are all right, but. that fellow over the hill is losing terribly." Asking the fellow over the hill how it is, he is met with response, "My shpep arc just doing bully, but that fellow back thero has lost about all hisn." Garrett thinks the losses down Applegate, csjiocially of sheep, are heavy. The "Indepcndf.nl" takes us to task and says the Sentinel has entered the combination that is defending tho Supreme Court. That paper mistakes our position. The Sentinel- knows nothing of any combination, rccognizps no master, receives no huosunos, stands alone, acknowedging only duty to the public; and will maintain the right, to defend or oppose, Any public servant according to his deserts; or to discuss fairly any principle of public policy, to the best of its ability. "A.gentlemr.n of Big Butto thinks he can protect his sheep from cayotcs by putting a leather collv with .shirp spikes in it around the neck of each sheep. He sajs cayotes catch sheep back of the head, and thinks -if they run a sharp spike through their jaws once or twice, thpy will begin to think sheep are not to be fooled with." The above from the "Tidings" seems plausi ble but those who understand "cav otes" think thev would lo tooled only once, and then "catch their mutton in .. . ... ... Second Childhood. The u theory .that childhood steals again, in tho arms of old ago, exemplified in the case of "PI Schumpf," mother of Geo. S of this placo. The old lady lair physical health, has passi eighty-first yeaT, and bears un able traces of oarly beauty and v womanhood. Now she is, mt ally, a mere child. He bought them in Sacramento, and will keep thorn hore until -Sprinc when he will tako them out to the Lake. Beforo turning them into thqLake proper he intends to put them into a small pond or slough at tho edge of th lake if he can find one suitable, and dam it up so as to prevent their getting into the main body of watr.r until $ioir numbera have been increased by .breed ing. Tho writer thinks tho routo should bo surveyed and tho stakes set "well in sight" so contractors can bid for the work and so the peoplo who aro interested may know just exactly what the road will cost: as at present they aro all in the dark. Wo have also seen a letter from two prominent men in Crescent City to Mr. J. W. It seems to us that the first step to be taken is the organiza tion of a company so that tho public might have sonic coufidnnco in the pro ject, know what thej' were doing ami in whoso hands their intercuts r.ro to be put.
